My name is Noel Hatch, I’m Research & Design Manager for Kent County Council and am helping run the Transformed by You co-design programme for Kent Connects and I want to talk about how we want to work together with you to use technology to make Kent a better place
Set the context & challenge people’s perception of what public services can do. With a membership of all the Kent and Medway authorities, Kent Police, Kent Fire & Rescue Service and NHS Kent & Medway*, Kent Connects is a powerful alliance of public service providers. Our role is to tackle the barriers to the joining up and sharing of public services. Our vision is to lead this transformation through the application of leading edge technology.
Stimulate collaboration between public service staff, students, pupils, entrepreneurs and communities to develop collaborative research
Work with the next generation for whom many of the new ways of researching & designing services they don’t see as R&D methods but what come naturally to them
Although at one workshop we worked with an intergenerational art group, one of the grandmother’s there was sketching ideas with her iPad, which I’ve never used, so sometimes the next generation is where you least expect it
That’s why we’ve developed Transformed by You
How can the use of technology help people… Help each other. Keep fit and stay healthy. Get involved in arts & culture
We’re passionate about helping people come together to develop solutions that tackle local needs (word cloud of needs / user stories). Mapping a person’s journey. Describing a day in the life. Framing the opportunity.

…especially when we have the skills on our doorstep (images of prototypes from students). From developing prototypes to connect younger and older people over physical tasks (OnTapp) to using gaming technology to help young people tackle cyber bullying (Customer Led Transformation – national pilot, leveraged £90K external investment) to a sensor-based innovation to reduce falls & isolation for your elderly relatives (Kemuri). To reinforce this joint working with students & researchers, KITA was set up between public services, further & higher education to support collaboration and provide opportunities for knowledge transfer, joint funding and the exchange of innovative practices for the benefit of customers, students, the public and the participating organisations.
