Good Evening! I am here tonight to present to you, our school board, information on why technology is a good investment. It is my plan to prove to you that an investment in technology is really an investment in the future achievement and success of our students.
At Fertile Beltrami our school dedicates a significant amount of our budget to technology. Every year we are updating laptops, computer labs, software as well as investing in new technology like smart boards and i-pads. Is it a good investment? Yes….. it is. -In this presentation I will touch on four main points how research shows technology benefits students. The first technology dividend comes through enhanced classroom instruction.
Today’s classroom is rapidly changing. Teachers are using technology to enhance proven learning strategies. For example i- movie provides a ways for students to show comprehension of concepts in a nonlinguistic way. Students and teachers can use the online web site Quizlet to create flashcards to practice and study terms. Quizlet is a great site because it will also read the flash card to students who are auditory learners and students can give answers orally if they have a microphone. Using Marzano’s learning strategies teachers can create instruction and lessons to engage all students and help students to create their own personal learning environments.
Research shows classrooms that using technology in classrooms has positive benefitsAnalyzing data from over 500 individual research studies, one researcher concluded students like their classes more and develop more positive attitudes when the classes include computer-based instruction (Schacter, 1999)Eighth-grade students whose teachers received professional development on computers showed gains in math scores of up to 13 weeks above grade level. (Wenglinsky, 1998) (Schacter, 1999)So we know technology can improve interest and attitudes in class but how else do our students profit from our investment?
Technology also has been proven to influence student achievement. In an earlier slide I mentioned a study of data of over 500 individual research projects, the man who conducted that research is James Kulik.Kulik’s research also came to other conclusions showing a positive connection between technology and student achievementFirst…Kulik’s data shows that students who used computer-based instruction scored at the 64th percentile in tests on achievement compared to students without computers based instruction who scored at the 50th percentile on the same testsNext Kulik was also able to conclude that student were learning more in less time when they receive computer based instructionIn short Kulik showed how technology positively affect the achievement of students on tests and their ability to achieve more in less time.
In one classroom setting teachers where able to improve student achievement on state science tests by utilizing technology to re-teach and reinforce concepts.Teachers at this school used technology to help create a cross curricular activity to help relearn and reinforce science concepts and meet ISTE standards. This is a map how showing how the teachers created connections for all content areas based on a future field trip to a local Iron Works. Following this project student scores on standardized tests improved. (Simpson, 2008) This innovative use help proves how technology can improve scores on standardized testing. The next point I will touch on is how Technology helps create higher critical thinking and problem solving skills
Tonight we are here to make a decision about our investment in technology. To make this decision we are all using our critical thinking and problem solving skills. In the classroom we teachers are always trying to help students build these skills, and research shows that by using technology student can create vital higher critical thinking and problem solving skills. 1)An evaluation of the The Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT), which promotes classroom technology integration, found the experience appeared to create new learning experiences requiring higher level reasoning and problems solving. (Baker, Gearhart, and Herman) (Schacter, 1999) 2)In an earlier slide I showed you how teachers created a curriculum around a class field trip. Through their hands on experiences students were working together to create new connections between what they learned in science, math and history. As a result of their critical thinking science students showed a deeper understanding of science concepts and skills through results on standardized tests. (Simpson, 2008)
One research study showed how Students who used the Jasper video programs were better able to complete complex problem-solving tasks.Using the Marzano learning strategies, the Jasper video series uses characters who model problem solving skills relating to math skill but it also has cross curriculum ties. This research shows students who use technology are able to better complete complex problem-solving tasks. (Cradler, McNabb, Freeman & Burchett, 2002)The last payout from our technology investment I would like to discuss is how technology prepares our students for the the workforce.
As teachers we are always concerned about our students future after school. Research also shows how technology helps to prepare our student for the workforce. In a study by Stern & Rahn, the researchers concluded that integrating technology with thematic and interdisciplinary projects can enhance career preparation, (Cradler, McNabb, Freeman & Burchett, 2002) They also found that classes that integrate student’s work experience with academic subjects provided students with important knowledge about workplace soft skills and how to apply academic knowledge to real world experiences. In a another study our own state of Minnesota took part in research where our schools documented the benefits of using information technologies bring the world of work into the classroom (Johnson, 1996). (Cradler, McNabb, Freeman & Burchett, 2002)
In conclusion – research shows we have made a wise choice by adding technology to our investment portfolio.By diversifying our investment in a variety of instructional technology equipment, software and teacher training we are ensuring ourselves a positive return on our investment.Thank you.
