2. TIPS
The ideal medication for treatment of UTI is an
antibacterial agent that eradicates bacteria from
the urinary tract infection with minimal effects
on fecal and vaginal flora, therefore minimizing
the incidence of vaginal yeast infection (or
vaginitis). Yeast vaginitis often causes more
symptoms and is more difficult and costly to
treat than the original UTI.
Most common drugs of choice in this kind of
infection are cephalosporin or an ampicillin/
aminoglycoside combination, levofloxacin
(levaquin).
3. TIPS
Other commonly used medications include
trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and
nitrofurantoin (macrodantin, furadantin).
Regardless of the drugs prescribed, the patient
should always complete the course prescribed,
even if relief of symptoms occurs before that
time.
Longer medication courses are generally
prescribed for men, pregnant women, and
women with pyelonephritis and other types of
complicated UTI's.
