                                                                 Thus have I heard. At one time, Lord Buddha

                                                            the Naga king as follovzs:-
                                                                 "Different ways of thinking lead sentient beings

                                                            to different kinds of action which in turn subjects

                                                            (i.e,, as devas, human beings, asuras, inhabitants of

                                                           Majesty, do you notice the variety of forms, colours,
&Etlnqjlt7                                                 and species in this cong.regation and in the sea?

                                                            - "Now, all these variations are due to the mind

                                                           acts of either meritorious or demeritorious nafure.

                                                           As to the mind itself, it is immaterial, unknowable,

                                                                            transient and delusive by nature.

                                                        fut positively, there is no creator at the back of

                                                        are above speech and concept, and their very own

                                                        nature is phantom-like. Realising this, the wise
#tr,rffi.                                               perfonn, as they ought to, meritorious deeds; and
                                                        !y doing so, they attain in their birth skhandhas
                                                        (aggregates), ayatanas (sphere of meeting or basis
                                                        of consciousness), and dhatus (elements) of noble
                                                        nature, and they are pleasing to the eye of those
                                                        who lmk at them.

                                                        body of a Buddha begotten by hundred thousand

                                                        splendour outshines that of the assembly; and even
!a*.h'E 'HTHffi?                                        if myriad kotis of I suaras (gods) were present,
                                                        the light (from their body) would be over-shadowed.
                                                        Verily, those who gaze at the body of a Tathagata
                                                        will find themselves dazzld,.
                                                             "Again, please lmk at the Mahasattaas present
     trtkvwtb#tgffi ' wt9ffiiFi' -uJE rrt               here. How elegant and pure are their magnificent
$EF#XffiBinfre " a.F6XEE;r*[*+ 'Xffiry                  forms! This is due soley to the performance of
                                                        8md deeds. Again, look at the eight species of
-#' IFK#xffiMFnH"                                       devas, nagas, etc. All of them are powerful and
                                                        influential beings, and their favourite birth is also
                                                        due to the merit of their good deeds
                                                             "Now, in this big ocean we find all sentient
      f+/<iFtr , FfrH*.H'Y,,$,ffifrY" *Jr.vX            beings therein, large or small in size, have coarse
zJr, ffHH,L.' ffiffiffifi 'lrg;*ffi 'ffi6##             and ugly hxlies. This is due to the fact that their
                                                        mind once worked with such ideas as resulted

                                                               bodily, orally and mentally in evil deeds; and

                                                               of his own acts.

                                                               gtrly the law of cause and effect and as a rule
,16&#X"                                                        practise good deeds. Make this your constant study

                                                                likewise. Move not from the Right View and never
fo                                                              fall back to the heresies of eternalism and annihila-
                                                                tionism. Towards ttre Bhikshus (lit the flelds of
       fiftffifrEm   ' FiBtr€   "   Ettits ,lF&L                merit), respect them, feed them, and rejoice at
                                                                their holiness. For doing; so, you are now respected
x&ffiffia.                                                      by men and devas who make offering to you.

                                                                one way for the Bodhisattua to annihilate all
ffo                                                             strfferings of evil existence. What is this one way?

                                                                the meritorious dharmas, think of them and make
#*.                                                             dservations on them, so that their impression
                                                                becomes stronger and stronger in the mind and not

                                                                therein. Such a practice will enable one to free oneself

                                                                nities to be in the presence of Buddhas, Bodhisat-

                                                                I "Now, why they are called meritorious dhar-

                                                               !Y nractising w-hich all men, devas, Arhats, Pratye-

                                                                  Buddhas, and Supremely Enlightened Buddhas

                                                                         dharmas are the ten meritorious deeds. What are

                                                                             will attain ten means in warding off evil passions

                                                                             (i.e,, without caring his own welfare and world

                                                                             great is his compassion towards all sentient beings,

                                                                             nightmare, (8) links of enmity are cut off and all

                                                                             free from the care of being born in an evil

                                                                             he will attain in his future Buddhahmd the Buddha
                                                                             attribute which enables him to determine the span

                                                            always in a charitable mood, (10) he will go to

                                                            Sambodhi, he will attain in his future Buddhahood

                                                            He who abstains {rcrm unchaste conduct will attain
So                                                          fotrr qualities, the possessing of which is commended
                                                            by the wise. What are they? They are:-(l) all

                                                            is praised and adored by the whole world, (4) his

                                                                              (1) incormptible body, for no one can harm him,

+o                                                                    If a man abstains frorn harsh language, he will

                                                                      man abstains frorn frivolous talks, he will succeed

                                                                      They are:-(l) he is bound to be beloved by the

                                                                      intelligently and accurately, (3) his authority and

                                                                      his virtue are certainly superior to those of devas

                                                                      his futu::e Buddhahood the Buddha ettribute of

                                                                      become a Buddha at such and such a time), and
                                                                      all such pre.dictions made are never given in vain.

                                                                                     a man frees himself frorn heretical views, he

                                                                                  are:-(l) he gets true happiness beneficial to his

                                                                                  and effect and abstains from doing evil even at the

                                                                  the happiness of the Asamkrta (unconditioned) and
                                                                  Samkrta (conditioned or compounded,) Dharmas.

                                                                  ten meritorious deeds will lead us to master comple
                                                                  tely the Dharmas including the attainment of the

                                                                  Enlightenment, fearless for freeing from all taints,
      I                                                           fearless in preaching the factors that bind beings
il'                                                               to birth and death, and fearless in preaching the
                                                                  way leading to emancipation) and the eighteen
                                                                   Aaenika Dharmas (independent states that distin'
                                                                  Suistr a Buddha fr<rm others). Therefore all of you
                                                                   should practise them diligently.

                                                                   all towns, districts and villages have their foundation

Now, your Majesty, do you notice the variety of forms, colours, &Etlnqjlt7 and species in this cong.regation and in the sea? fue they not different from one another? - "Now, all these variations are due to the mind Vfrn='-l.lJ ' WT:4.ftt,L.s* . .6++ . HXi " ,Fhich is responsible for our bodily, oral, and mental acts of either meritorious or demeritorious nafure. ;*X . H+ . FIrtx. Realising this, the wise #tr,rffi. perfonn, as they ought to, meritorious deeds; and !y doing so, they attain in their birth skhandhas (aggregates), ayatanas (sphere of meeting or basis of consciousness), and dhatus (elements) of noble nature, and they are pleasing to the eye of those who lmk at them. Its splendour outshines that of the assembly; and even !a*.h'E 'HTHffi? if myriad kotis of I suaras (gods) were present, the light (from their body) would be over-shadowed. Verily, those who gaze at the body of a Tathagata will find themselves dazzld,. "Again, please lmk at the Mahasattaas present trtkvwtb#tgffi ' wt9ffiiFi' -uJE rrt here. How elegant and pure are their magnificent $EF#XffiBinfre " a.F6XEE;r*[*+ 'Xffiry forms! This is due soley to the performance of 8md deeds. Again, look at the eight species of -#' IFK#xffiMFnH" devas, nagas, etc. All of them are powerful and influential beings, and their favourite birth is also due to the merit of their good deeds "Now, in this big ocean we find all sentient f+/<iFtr , FfrH*.H'Y,,$,ffifrY" *Jr.vX beings therein, large or small in size, have coarse zJr, ffHH,L.' ffiffiffifi 'lrg;*ffi 'ffi6## and ugly hxlies. This is due to the fact that their mind once worked with such ideas as resulted

Move not from the Right View and never fo fall back to the heresies of eternalism and annihila- tionism. Towards ttre Bhikshus (lit the flelds of fiftffifrEm ' FiBtr€ " Ettits ,lF&L merit), respect them, feed them, and rejoice at their holiness. For doing; so, you are now respected x&ffiffia. by men and devas who make offering to you. trtE- ! H*n$ffifr^-E 'BYW-U#Hitr "Yflrr Majesty we should know this. There is one way for the Bodhisattua to annihilate all ffo strfferings of evil existence. What is this one way? ffd$F- ? ;Ht{gTE' Hfr,E'lE' W* It is this; from day to night, remember constantly the meritorious dharmas, think of them and make #*. dservations on them, so that their impression becomes stronger and stronger in the mind and not [AFH+=E ' AA]BF 'TE-€ft #fdl tbe least evil thowht can have a chance to mingle therein. Such a practice will enable one to free oneself ffio ifor ever from evil deeds, to complete the work of [ECF6E+Ffr#i,iff ' #HHffi ' H'++#Lfi meritorious dharmas and to have frequent opportu- nities to be in the presence of Buddhas, Bodhisat- ixifr, #ffi. k#,w*" ituas and other holy persons (for their teaching). Therefore they are
