Singapore and France
Background France – promised land for immigrants Single dominating race( White French) Singapore - multicultural society Mixture of races: Chinese, Indian, Malay. Well-aware of racial tolerance Much Less severe discrimination
CIVIL RIGHT France: Police with harassment and brutality Policy and laws discourage minority ‘s civil right Singapore: moderate equality between foreigner and local Discriminative attitude in certain government officer
Social Justice France: refugees and minority live in poverty and hopelessness; no one listens to them youth rebellious reaction Singapore : foreign workers bear hardships of work and stereotype  How will their future generations be treated?
Job France: 'finish up in the wastepaper basket because of the name or the address of the candidate’ France: hardly secure a job- unwilling victim of globalization
Employment Singapore: everyone stands for equal chance of employment, based on individual competency.- although particular company exploit and ill treat foreign workers Singapore: affected by economic downturn- downsize of workers.
PRECAUTION MEASURES From the identified instances of prejudice and discrimination, Singapore can draw lessons from France. What can we do to prevent the same situations from occurring and minimize social divisions? As Singapore Government As Local Singaporeans As New Immigrants or Foreigners
As Singapore Government Establish special authority Legislate to protect the legitimate rights and interests of immigrants and foreigners Implement policies to protect local people in some areas Implement multicultural education (cultural fusion) Strengthen control over immigration policy Formulate corresponding measures or emergency bills Try to change the political loyalty of new immigrants Involve new immigrants into political life
As Local Singaporeans Be aware of the importance of new immigrants Need acceptance and appreciation to new immigrants or foreigners instead of prejudice Be open-minded to the cultures and customs of other countries or religions Be friendly to new comers, enhance their sense of belonging to Singapore
As New Immigration or Foreigners Understand the situation in Singapore Actively integrate into the new environment Reduce blame, negative opinions and excessive pessimism Seek appropriate help Self- improve and contribute to social development Comply with national laws and pay attention to self-conduct
PROBLEMS & CHALLENGES Implementation of the policies does not work properly Misconceptions on different ethnics and social classes. Deep-rooted stereotypes and prejudices Inter-cultural conflict Economic crisis Antigovernment forces Excessive behaviour caused by radical ideas
