WARDROBE ESSENTIALS
How often to you look in the wardrobe, which
is full to overflowing, and yet declare you
have nothing to wear. Sound familiar!
What you need to do is sort out your
wardrobe and ensure it holds the wardrobe
essentials. These essentials need to have a
couple of elements to them including being -
 Your wardrobe basis - Without these
essentials something is missing
 Trend proof - In other words you can wear
them to a wide range of different occasions
and still have that stylish look
 Flexible - They need to be able to be given
a whole new look and feel just by changing
accessories
So before you head out and revamp your
entire wardrobe check through what you
already have.
Also when buying essentials don’t just buy
one. Firstly go for the neutral tones then add
a couple in colours that best suit you. Vary
the necklines or sleeve lengths. So what are
the things to arm your wardrobe with?
Jeans that suit your style - This means the
style that you can wear both comfortably and
looks good on you. Don’t wear hipsters if
your waistline will get in the way of seeing
the top of them! Don’t wear skinny jeans if, in
reality, you could do with losing those extra
kilos. It is worth paying that little extra for
that flattering look and feel.
Long sleeve white t-shirt - An obvious
staple which can then be jazzed up with your
accessories. A well cut slim fit style can
make anybody look slimmer.
Short sleeve white t-shirt - As with the long
sleeves, matches anything. Find a couple of
style that suit you and then get a couple of
variations in the colours too. Jazz up with
your accessories.
Cardigan - If you make your cardigan a
neutral tone it should match most of your
other essentials.

Black trousers - These can then be dressed
up or down to suit your occasion. Keep the
length appropriate to wear with flatter shoes
but also where you can add your heels for
style when you wish to. They can also be
jazzed up with a glitter, sequinned or
hanging belt.
White button blouse - Preferably both long
and short sleeve
A black tank top - Can be worn with
everything and can be jazzed up when
required or easy wear for the beach
A jacket or blazer - Often a neutral tone is
good to go with anything but also a black or
white one is usually a good match for most
outfits.
A little black dress - Yes, this one always
makes it on to an essentials list. With so
many styles out there make sure you choose
one that both suits your body type but you
also feel comfortable in. Then use your
accessories to your heart’s content!
ITEMS YOU’RE BETTER OFF
BUYING SECOND HAND
With some products it simply doesn’t make
sense to buy new at full price when
invariably you can find the same quality
buying second hand. By doing so you can
often see your savings quickly multiply. Here
are examples of some of the best items to
consider buying second hand.
Car - Probably the first thing that springs to
mind would be a car. Did you know if you
buy a new car it depreciates by up to 20% as
soon as you drive out of the car yard! Even
just going for last year’s model can be a
huge saving. Once a car is over five years
old you can expect to get only a third of the
original price.
Books - Both text books and reading books.
Nowadays you can of course buy online
making huge savings. However for those

who enjoy the feeling of holding a book there
is an abundance of second hand book stores
and book fairs. Another option is to ask your
friends or on facebook, invariably someone
will have finished the book you are after and
happy to pass on or sell at a very good price.
For text books often your college or learning
facility will have a library or rental
department you can use if it is not a book
you will need on-going.
Children’s Clothing - Often you can find
some wonderful items through friends and
family, websites for swapping or buying/
selling second hand clothes and of course
shops such as your local Hospice or
Salvation Army store always have some
great bargains. In fact, while you are at it
there are often great bargains for adults as
well as a book section too!
Pets - It almost seems a sin to pay the
hundreds of dollars you can do for pets in a
store when there is such an abundance of
abandoned and yet loving, beautiful pets at
the SPCA and other shelters. If you are
considering getting a pet make sure you
check these out first - you may be there last
hope for a good home!
Formal clothing - Whether a wedding
gown, ball gown or dinner jacket there are
so many people that head out and spend
the earth to wear something just once! You
can make some wonderful savings. Also
designer stores can sometimes have
seconds on sale at significant savings often
with flaws barely noticeable!
Video games and DVDs - Once someone
has completed the game or seen the movie
more than 4-5 times it is time to move on
and you can take advantage and get some
great bargains.

equipment merely sits in someone’s
garage or spare room collecting dust. Do
check on the condition but generally so
many people lose interest before the
equipment has barely been used!
Hand Tools - Simple tools with few moving
parts, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers,
etc can last for decades if well made and
maintained and often easy to find in garage
sales or online.
Musical Instruments - Particularly when
your child is starting out buying new is not
wise. Either second hand or perhaps rental
can give you an idea of how long their
interest will last. If the interest continues and
the ability is good you can change your
stance later.
Bicycles - Like cars new season bikes come
out all the time. Do check the condition of
the bike and also ensure it isn’t stolen! Also
if you can wait until the cooler months you
can often get better bargains on bikes from
those who no longer want to brave the
elements!
So much of what we buy devalues as soon
as we open the box or walk out the store so
save yourself some dollars and use it for
something else you enjoy!

BUDGETING ADVICE
from Pak n Save
The following information is found on the Pak n
Save website – www.paknsave.co.nz.
Budget Budget Budget!!! Setting a budget is so
important we wrote it three times.
If you work out how much you want to spend
every week and stick to it you can save a little
fortune by the end of the year.
Good ways to make sure you stick to it are
taking your budget in cash to the supermarket or
counting up your costs on a calculator as you
shop. Maybe use the calculator on your cell
phone though.
Don't eat your groceries
Well not immediately. Make sure you eat before
you go to the supermarket or you'll end up with a
trolley full of what you feel like, not what you
need. And while that's great for snacking on,
there's only so much you can do with corn chips,
biscuits, gherkins and wine gums for dinner.
Bulk up a bit
Not you personally, you look great. Bulk buy.
Sometimes buying staple food items like flour,
sugar, rice and pasta works out to be much
cheaper when you buy big. Think of it as a long-
term investment. Or maybe a short time food
supply. It really depends how many mouths you
have to feed.
Shopping Tip
Do either fortnightly or monthly shopping.
This saves you time, petrol, and you buy
less goodies because you shop less.
CUISINES OF THE WORLD -

Many dishes are cooked in vegetable oil
although peanut and mustard oil are also
popular in India.
Some of the most common Indian dishes
include -
Biryani - Is a rice-based dish made with
spices, rice and chicken, mutton, fish, eggs
or vegetables. The name is derived from the
Persian word beryā which means "fried" or
"roasted"
Butter Chicken - Butter Chicken is among
the best known Indian foods across the
world. The sauce can be made as hot or mild
as suits your palate and so is suitable for
everyone. Butter chicken is also commonly
known as Murg Makhani.
Vindaloo - Is the hottest and the spiciest
type of curry. Introduced to the Goa region
by the Portuguese, it is famed for its heat
and spice. Blending chillies with turmeric,
cumin, coriander and authentic spices a
vindaloo is not for the faint hearted!
Rogan Josh - The lovely colour of Rogan
Josh comes from the Kashmiri dry red
chillies which are used to prepare it. An
aromatic lamb dish of Persian origin, and
brought to India by the Moghuls, Rogan Josh
means meat cooked in clarified butter at
intense heat. Sometimes lamb can be
substituted with goat meat.
Tandoori - Classic tandoori chicken is
marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, and plenty
of spices. The name comes from the type of
cylindrical clay oven used in preparation of
the dish with the vibrant red and orange
colourings in the dish coming from cayenne
pepper and red chilli powder.
Daal - Daal is the signature dish of Punjabi
cuisine filled with rich protein and fiber.

THE TOP HEALTHY FOODS TO
EAT - MEATS, FISH AND GRAINS
In our web article we discuss the most
healthy options for fruit and vegetables. Here
we will talk about the other food groups
containing the most healthy options.
Salmon - Salmon and tuna are usually the
first fish to leap to mind when discussing
healthy foods. The omega-3 fatty acids in
oily fishnot only boost skin’s defences again
UV damage it has been claimed salmon is
the richest source of the omega-3 fatty acids
which of course are excellent protection for
the heart.
Salmon is also an excellent source of protein
and contains amino acids. Amino acids are
capable of forming tissues, organs, muscles,
skin and hair and their importance is often
overlooked.
Tuna, mackerel and sardines come into the
same category as salmon for benefits.
Eggs - Egg whites offer protein with minimal
calories. Often beaten off healthy food lists
with claims eggs raise cholesterol however,
it is like many foods, beneficial in
moderation. Eggs are not only a great
source of protein but also contain vitamin A,
potassium and B vitamins including folic
acid, choline and biotin.
Good for nerve and brain health plus the
amino acids make the protein in eggs easy
for your body to absorb.
Chicken - Chicken is a great source of lean,
low fat protein. The amino acid tryptophan is
found in chicken which helps combat
depression. The protein helps prevent bone
loss as well as the phosphorus being good
for bones, teeth, kidney, liver and your
central nervous system.
The selenium helps speed up your
metabolism and niacin helps prevent cancer
plus the vitamin A helps towards eye health.
Lentils - Packed with protein and folate.
Lentils contain more folate than any
unfortified plant food. Helping to protect
against heart disease, folate also helps
prevent birth defects.
Lentils also contain iron and fibre
Oatmeal - Full of soluable fibre which helps
in the drop in “bad” cholesterol. The fibre
also slows down the conversion of this whole
food to simple sugars. The high levels of
magnesium nourish the body’s proper use of
glucose and insulin secretion. Also eating a

carbohydrates three hours before exercise
helps burn more fat.
Oatmeal, like many whole grains also
contains plant lignans, which help protect
against breast and other hormone-
dependent cancers as well as heart disease.
Sunflower Seeds - One of the richest
sources of vitamin E. The vitamin E helps
destroy the free radicals. Sunflower seeds
also contain photosterols which reduce blood
levels of cholesterol, enhance the immune
response and decrease risk of certain
cancers. The magnesium is beneficial for
asthma, helps lower high blood pressure,
reduces heart attack and stroke risk and
helps prevent migraine headaches.
Plus the selenium helps with cancer
prevention.
Most nuts and grains have similar benefits to
the sunflower seeds. The best nuts if taking
your diet into account would be almonds,
cashews and pistachios with the worst nuts
being macadamia nuts and pecan nuts
although they still have some good health
benefits. For your brain the best are
peanuts, the best nuts for your heart would
be walnuts and best for disease prevention
would be almonds.

PERAS AL VINO
"Peras al Vino" or Pears in Wine is a simple
dessert, made with fresh pears and white
wine. It is very tasty and an elegant ending
for a dinner any time of the year, but
especially in the Autumn.
Dish type: Dessert
Prep Time: 15-30 Mins
Cooking Time: 30-60 mins
Serves: 3-4 People
Ingredients
4 ripe pears (firm)
750ml bottle white wine
1 ¾ cups water
1 ¼ cups sugar
1 cinnamon stick
Peel the pears, but leave the stems. Cut the
bottoms flat so that they will stand up by
themselves. (Note: Pears will brown if
exposed to air too long, so if you're
interrupted, be sure to submerge them in
water with a squeeze of lemon juice until
you can return and cook them).
In a large pot combine the white wine,
water, sugar and cinnamon stick. Place on
medium heat on the stove top and stir until
sugar is completely dissolved. Immediately
place pears in the wine mixture, cover and
allow to simmer on low heat for 1 hour.
After cooking for an hour, carefully remove
each pear from the pot and place in the
bowl or plate on which you will serve.

You may need to use tongs in one hand and
a spoon in the other, since the pears will be
soft. Set aside and allow to cool. Continue to
cook the wine mixture uncovered on low
heat for about 30 minutes so that the liquid is
reduced.
Remove sauce from heat and allow to cool.
If you are making this dessert ahead of time,
once the pears and sauce have cooled,
place them in the refrigerator and remove a
few minutes before serving. Spoon wine
sauce over each pear and allow to pool
around the pear. Garnish each pear with a
sprig of mint. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

The following are a couple of fabulous hearty
French cuisine dishes for you to enjoy during
the colder winter months.
GRATINEE AU FROMAGE
(ONION SOUP)
Serves: 4
Ingredients
3 large onions, peeled
20g/3/4 oz butter
1 tablespoon flour
75 ml/3 fl oz dry white wine
1.4 l/2 1/2 pt water
1 or 2 beef stock cubes
Salt and pepper
4 tablespoons port
1 or 2 egg yolks
4 thin slices French bread
75g/3 oz grated Gruyere cheese (although
other cheeses can be substituted)
Preparation and cooking - 45 minutes
Finely chop the onions. Cook them very
slowly in the butter in a large covered
saucepan. When the onions are golden,
sprinkle them with flour. Stir with a wooden
spoon until the mixture browns lightly, no
more.
Add the wine, water, the stock cube(s), salt
and pepper and simmer the mixture for 20
minutes. Meanwhile, toast the bread.
Heat the grill to high. Whisk together the
port and egg yolks and then pour them into
an ovenproof soup tureen. Pour in, little by
little, the hot soup, stirring constantly.
Float the toasted bread on top and sprinkle
over the grated cheese. Place the soup
under a very hot grill until the cheese is
melted and lightly browned, then serve
immediately.
Note: Whenever possible use homemade
beef stock rather than a stock cube.

marinating plus 2 hours 30 mins or in a
pressure cooker 50 mins
Slice the meat in large cubes and put in a
large bolw with the marinade
ingredients. Marinate until next day.
Drain meat and blot it dry with absorbent
paper. Brown in the oil over high heat. Add
vegetables from the marinade and 2
tablespoons butter and simmer for 15 mins.
Sprinkle over flour and stir over high heat.
The flour should brown lightly.
Cover the meat with the marinade. Bring to
the boil. Add seasoning to taste 125 ml/4 fl
oz water, the tomato puree, garlic and
bouquet garni, cover and simmer slowely
for 2 hours (pressure cooker 50 mins).
About 30 mins before the end of cooking,
peel the potatoes and drop them in boiling
water and cook until tender.
Serve the stew in a bowl and the potatoes
in a separate serving dish sprinkled with the
chopped parsley.
Note: For a more elegant stew, towards the
end of cooking add pickling onions which
have been blanched in boiling water for 2
mins, drained, then lightly browned with a
little diced bacone and butter for about 5
mins.

  • 4. WARDROBE ESSENTIALS How often to you look in the wardrobe, which is full to overflowing, and yet declare you have nothing to wear. Sound familiar! What you need to do is sort out your wardrobe and ensure it holds the wardrobe essentials. These essentials need to have a couple of elements to them including being -  Your wardrobe basis - Without these essentials something is missing  Trend proof - In other words you can wear them to a wide range of different occasions and still have that stylish look  Flexible - They need to be able to be given a whole new look and feel just by changing accessories So before you head out and revamp your entire wardrobe check through what you already have. Also when buying essentials don’t just buy one. Firstly go for the neutral tones then add a couple in colours that best suit you. Vary the necklines or sleeve lengths. So what are the things to arm your wardrobe with? Jeans that suit your style - This means the style that you can wear both comfortably and looks good on you. Don’t wear hipsters if your waistline will get in the way of seeing the top of them! Don’t wear skinny jeans if, in reality, you could do with losing those extra kilos. It is worth paying that little extra for that flattering look and feel. Long sleeve white t-shirt - An obvious staple which can then be jazzed up with your accessories. A well cut slim fit style can make anybody look slimmer. Short sleeve white t-shirt - As with the long sleeves, matches anything. Find a couple of style that suit you and then get a couple of variations in the colours too. Jazz up with your accessories. Cardigan - If you make your cardigan a neutral tone it should match most of your other essentials. Find your dream bed or mattress for ultimate sleep Fabulous bargains on a complete range of NZ made Sleepyhead Beds New Range of Bedroom furniture and Manchester Shop 6, The Silverdale Centre Ph: 424 8111 bedsruswgp@xtra.co.nz www.bedsrus.co.nz
  • 5. Black trousers - These can then be dressed up or down to suit your occasion. Keep the length appropriate to wear with flatter shoes but also where you can add your heels for style when you wish to. They can also be jazzed up with a glitter, sequinned or hanging belt. White button blouse - Preferably both long and short sleeve A black tank top - Can be worn with everything and can be jazzed up when required or easy wear for the beach A jacket or blazer - Often a neutral tone is good to go with anything but also a black or white one is usually a good match for most outfits. Hand Tools - Simple tools with few moving parts, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc can last for decades if well made and maintained and often easy to find in garage sales or online. Musical Instruments - Particularly when your child is starting out buying new is not wise. Either second hand or perhaps rental can give you an idea of how long their interest will last. Setting a budget is so important we wrote it three times. If you work out how much you want to spend every week and stick to it you can save a little fortune by the end of the year. Good ways to make sure you stick to it are taking your budget in cash to the supermarket or counting up your costs on a calculator as you shop. Maybe use the calculator on your cell phone though. Don't eat your groceries Well not immediately. Make sure you eat before you go to the supermarket or you'll end up with a trolley full of what you feel like, not what you need. And while that's great for snacking on, there's only so much you can do with corn chips, biscuits, gherkins and wine gums for dinner. Bulk up a bit Not you personally, you look great. Bulk buy. Sometimes buying staple food items like flour, sugar, rice and pasta works out to be much cheaper when you buy big. Think of it as a long- term investment. Or maybe a short time food supply. It really depends how many mouths you have to feed. Shopping Tip Do either fortnightly or monthly shopping. This saves you time, petrol, and you buy less goodies because you shop less. It is very tasty and an elegant ending for a dinner any time of the year, but especially in the Autumn. In a large pot combine the white wine, water, sugar and cinnamon stick. Place on medium heat on the stove top and stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Continue to cook the wine mixture uncovered on low heat for about 30 minutes so that the liquid is reduced. Remove sauce from heat and allow to cool. If you are making this dessert ahead of time, once the pears and sauce have cooled, place them in the refrigerator and remove a few minutes before serving. Spoon wine sauce over each pear and allow to pool around the pear. Garnish each pear with a sprig of mint. Serve with vanilla ice cream. Recipe from Lisa & Tony Sierra BEEF AND BACON BURGER...
