France has a well developed payments card market, although credit cards have a far lower
penetration rate compared to other European markets. In 2010, there were only 5.2 million
credit cards compared with 32 million charge cards. However, credit cards have seen a
faster CAGR of 14% compared with only 1.4% for pay now cards.
Credit card issuing in France is led by three main issuers, the largest of which is Credit
Mutuel, with 738,000 cards issued or a 14% share of the market. Caisse d'Epargne and
Banque Accord are the second and third largest credit card issuers with 664,000 and
653,000 cards respectively, accounting for 12.6% and 12.4% of the market.
Alternative payments show strong potential in France but currently are at an early stage of
development. Online payments are advancing but prepaid and mobile payments are
currently underdeveloped. Contactless is making greater progress, with 12.5% of all
consumers reportedly holding a contactless card.
