Annotated Bibliography: Steven Casey’s “Never Cry Wolf”
In the past few decades, due to efficient security in prisons, prisoners have managed to escape
and not get caught or to escape and get caught. Today, security in prisons has become extremely
enhanced. However, in Steven Casey’s “Never Cry Wolf,” a woman named Diane Downs was convicted
of shooting her three children. After being sentenced to a medium-security womens’ prison in Oregon,
she planned to escape in order to retain her freedom. The prison guards’ reliance on the motion
detection systems, the security system, and the alarm system allowed Diane to escape. If security was
enhanced in prisons and prison guards were aware of the sensory inhibitions, Diane wouldn’t have
escaped and then recaptured.
What others aren’t concerned about or don’t care about is the “what-ifs?” If a prisoner that is
considered a murder and held captive in prison finds a way out, chances are they could kill anyone
whenever or however they want to. People don’t take risks or just think about what may happen if a
prisoner escapes. Many lives of girls, boys, young adults, adults and others are at stake. Views of
prisoners are looked at as harmful and dangerous criminals, and once security in prisons are enhanced
this could be a least worry of many citizens. The purpose of prison is to rehabilitate, punish and (…..)
prisoners to become a better person and the purpose of security is to create a perception of sanctuary
and presence of safety. My research paper will inform citizens that they shouldn’t rely on the safety and
security of prisons and prisoners. Also, my research paper will be based off this bibliography which is an
origin for my research.

Williams, Franklin P., and Marilyn D. McShane. Encyclopedia of American Prisons. n.p.: Garland Pub,
1996. eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). Web. 4 Apr. 2013
Franklin P. Williams and Marilyn D. McShane, wrote the book Encyclopedia of American Prisons.
This book is a full reference to the American prison system from the past until today. This reference
contains over 300 entries that talk about infamous prisoners, escapes, prison wardens, prison society
and even technology in prison. In addition to infamous prisoners and social issues, the Encyclopedia also
contains essays by leading U.S. corrections experts. Furthermore, they also discuss topics such as
inmates that are diagnosed with AIDS and racial conflict to sexual exploiting.
This encyclopedia was published in 1996 and is still being updated today. From 1996 until now,
American prisons have overcame and went through so much things. These things could include well-
known escapes and racial altercations and more. Williams and McShane are considered very credible,
due to the writing of an encyclopedia. They also provide statistics over the past decades and statistics
today. Encyclopedias are highly reliable when it comes to research.
Since I’m writing about security in prisons, this book is very helpful to my research. Since I’ve
began using this book as a source, I have acknowledged many information about the American Prison
Systems. The information in this book help address the point of contraband and drugs in prison. The
information talks about how contraband and drugs are smuggled into prisons and how prison guards
become corrupt due to drugs and contraband. I simply cited words that the author states about
contraband and drugs within prison, prisoners and prison guards. In this book, I will use a few chapters
to back up my points about exchanging drugs, contraband, and corrupt prisoners. This will definitely
grab readers’ attention and get my point across.

In Joyner’s article, “The Dating Game,” she explains the creation of relationship between
prison guards and prisoners and also possible training strategies that will help prisons enhance
awareness for prison guards and their relationship with prisoners. The relationship could
consists of being sexual or just personal. However, Joyner transitions from relationship with
prisoners to the identity of corrupt prison guards.
This article was written last year, in 2012, and Joyner seems to emphasize the role of
prison guards, prisoners, and the activities that are being done. These same roles mentioned in
this article are still experience and witnessed today. However, something needs to be done to
prevent this. Joyner provides a few solutions to prevent the smuggling of drugs and developing
corrupt prison guards. Joyner, herself and her background history, explains why this source is
credible. She was a training director of the sheriff’s office and a certified jail manager. The things
she has experience and wrote about are highly related.
This source will be used in my research paper to back up my points about corrupt prison
guards and the illegal activities they endure. I can also use this article by using some of the
words stated. Referring back to what I stated about corrupt prison guards, this makes Joyner
very reliable and gives me the same credibility as well. Furthermore, Joyner gives some solutions
to prevent things like this from happen. I could take his examples and explanations and my ideas
and create a broader solution to prevent this.
Life Behind Bars. Films Media Group, 1999. Films On Demand. Web. 05 April 2013.

In Life Behind Bars, the film discusses issues that are occurring in prisons, which are prison
punishment, rights for inmates versus rights of victims, and compassion for inmates. The film
looks at what is best for prisoners when it comes down to rehabilitation programs for prisoners.

Next, it turns their attention to what officials a correctional facility believe about punishment for
prisoners. Then, talks about the rights of prisoners and their physical or mental conditions. The
parts from this film that I will use in my research paper, “Security in Prisons,” will discuss what
life is like in prisons and the things that prisoners, prison guards, and the prison system is like.
This film is source cited from the University of Notre Dame, which automatically proves
it credibility. It talks about real life experiences that happen behind prison walls and bars and
actual footage of this is real proof. Since this film is filed under the criminal justice system, it is
highly reliable.
I can use this film in my research paper by discussing how and what prisons are like in
the past and how they are now. This information is important because in the past, security
hasn’t been enhanced and now the security is effectively enhanced to prevent several things. In
the past, while security wasn’t being increased, inmates were escaping and illegal activities were
being done. But today, however, since security is enhanced there are less prisoners escaping
and less activities.
