- Il termine “impronta ecologica” è stato concepito nel 1996 da William Rees e Mathis Wackernagel. Dal 1999 il Wwf (Wild worldwide Found) periodicamente calcola, aggiornandola, l’impronta ecologica nel suo Living Planet Report. Nell’ anno 2003 Mathis Wackernagel e altri studiosi hanno dato l’avvio al Global Footprint Network, che ha l’obbiettivo di migliorare la misura dell’impronta ecologica delle varie nazioni (e quindi di tutto il pianeta) e di conferirle un’importanza similare a quella del prodotto interno medio lordo. Il Global Footprint Network collabora attualmente con oltre 22 paesi tra cui :Francia, Germania, Italia, Australia, Brasile, Canada, Cina, Finlandia, Svizzera, ecc., e con autorità locali, università, istituti di ricerca, associazioni, ecc..

- The ecological footprint is a measure of the area needed to support a population’s lifestyle. This includes the consumption of food, fuel, wood, and fibres. Pollution, such as carbon dioxide emissions, is also counted as part of the footprint. The United States, China and India have the largest ecological footprints. Without knowing population size we cannot understand what this means about individuals’ ecological demands. Large populations live in China and India. In both territories resource use is below the world average. The per person footprint in the United States is almost five times the world average, and almost ten times what would be sustainable.
