Get Carter, Layer Cake and The Italian Job By Liam Gettings
Camera Get Carter Zoom in shot of Michael Caine standing in front of a window. The director chose this shot because it tells the audience that Michael Caine’s characters is either very important or powerful. Close up of the woman this shot was used to show how uncomfortable the woman is being surrounded by these gangsters. She could also be showing how uncomfortable she is about watching the slide show. Big close up of the side of Michael Caine's face. The director has used this shot to show the audience how angry he is about his brother being murdered.
Editing Get Carter The first editing technique we see is a cross cut. This is the switching from one narrative to another. The director has used this technique to show the audience who is talking to Michael Caine's character. The next technique we see is a reaction shot. This shot was used to show the woman's reaction at being touched by one of the gangsters. A motivated cut was also used when the audience first sees the slide projector. The director has used this technique because without it the audience would not have seen the projector as motivated cuts are used to show the audience something that is not immediately visible.
Mise En Scene Get Carter Costumes: in the opening scene to get carter the men are wearing suits showing they are rich, but it also tells the audience that these men are gangsters as gangsters tend to wear high priced suits. Setting: The scene takes place in one of the gangsters home. It is not apparent if weather it is night or day however there is a lack of lighting because they have dimmed them to watch the slide show. Props: in the opening scene the characters use lots of props one of the characters is operating a switch that allows him to change the slides on the projector, the other gangsters are using litters to light cigarettes and cigars also Michael Caine’s character makes himself a drink.
Sound Get Carter In the opening scene of get carter there is not much sound other than the narrative between the characters and the noise coming from the projector. These are both types of diagetic sound meaning they both take place within the film.
The first shot we see is a zooming out shot. This shot is zooming out to the back of a black van it then stops zooming out just as the vans doors are blown off . The director chose this shot because it tell the audience that something is about to happen in this case the doors have been blown off so that the robbers can steal what's inside the van. The second shot is a medium long shot of one of the robbers holding a shot gun and telling people to get on the floor. The director has used this shot to show how scary gangsters can be and he also chose this shot to make the audience aware that something terrible might happen. The final shot that I noticed I the opening scene was a close up of one of the hippies face as he is taking drugs. The director chose to show this shot because he wanted to make the audience aware of what the film is about because the film is not all violence. Camera Layer Cake
Editing Layer Cake The first editing technique used was a reaction shot. this technique was used to show the woman's reaction to the robbers blowing the vans doors of and then threatening her with a shot. There are also a lot of match on action shot. The director has used this particular editing technique because it shows the relationship between the scenes for example the robbers stealing drugs, could lead to the hippies smoking it which could then lead to the robbers and the hippies going to prison.
Mise En Scene Layer Cake Costumes: in layer cake have been used to show the audience that the film is about drugs and gangster and there a lot of examples of this in the opening sequence. The first being the robbers they are wearing black clothing and they are using tights as masks, this shows off the gangster aspect of the film as gangsters usually hire people to carry out robberies. We also see hippies at a party the hippies are dressed in long shirts and baggy trousers, this highlights the drug aspect of the film because common stereotypes show us that hippies smoke a lot of drugs. Next we see prisoners where the same uniform this being jeans and a blue jumper. Setting: the opening sequence takes place in three locations the first being in a street during the day where a robbery is taking place, the lighting is very dim as it was cloudy during filming. The second location is a house full of hippies as this was filmed in the day the room is being filled with natural light instead of artificial light. The third is the prison scene it is dark in the prison and there is not a lot of artificial light or natural light this is do to make the prisoners feel depressed about being in prison. Props: there were many props used during this opening scene the first being the shotguns that e robbers were using and the drugs that the hippies had in there home.
In the opening sequence of layer cake we can her Daniel Craig's voice talking about drugs and bank robbers. This is non-diagetic sound as the narrative has been added to the film during editing. This narrative also lets the audience know that this film is about drugs and gangsters. While Daniel Craig is talking there is also music playing in the background. The music playing in the background is also another example of non-diagetic sound as the music has been added during editing to make the audience feel something, in this case the audience is supposed to think that crime is cool and that everyone should be dealing drugs. Again as Daniel Craig is talking the audience can her the back doors of a van being blown off. This is diagetic sound as it takes place in the film it has not be added during editing. This also lets the audience know that something bad is about to happen in this case a robbery is taking place. Sound Layer Cake
Camera The Italian Job ,[object Object]
The next shot we see is an extreme long shot of the car being thrown off the side of the mountain by the gangsters. The director has used this clip to show how ruthless the gangsters are.
The final shot of the opening scene is a medium shot of one of the gangsters throwing a rife down the side of the mountain after the car. This is to show that this was planned and the gangsters wanted this man dead as they had a rife to throw down after the car. ,[object Object]
Mise En Scene The Italian Job Costumes: the opening scene to the Italian job is very similar to the opening scene of get carter this is because the men are wearing suits showing they are rich, but it also tells the audience that these men are gangsters as gangsters tend to wear high priced suits. Setting: The opening scene to the Italian job takes place on a mountain road possible in Italy this is because there are not that many mountain roads in England and it is sunny. As it Is sunny there is no need for artificial lighting. Props: there aren’t a lot of props in the opening of the Italian job there is only a rife that one of the gangsters throws off the mountain’s side.
