Gelada monkeys make vocalizations with their vocal cords that have "speech-like properties" according to a study by scientists from the University of Michigan, who believe these sounds may be similar to early human speech and could help gelada societies feel more connected. While most monkeys can only make basic noises, geladas can produce more complex sounds with their vocal anatomy. The scientists are still determining what the different gelada vocalizations mean.

relationated to the origins of human speech, because scientists from the University
of Michigan believes that these gelada calls might be similar to the primitive
noises. Dr Thore Bergman, who was the main author of the study, said that geladas
make sounds which have "speech-like properties". And most monkey and apes can
only make the most basic noises because they don’t have the vocal anatomy
required to make more complex sounds. Other monkeys and apes can do lip
smacking, they can move quickly theirs jaws, lips and tongues. But the gelada is the
only one that can make vocalisations, sounds with the vocal chords. The scientists
don’t know yet what their sounds mean, but they believe that the noises might be
used the way humans use small talk to help the monkey societies feel more
connected.
