Multicultural literature is a way of increasing cultural awareness. Through multicultural books many
young readers are able to make a connection with their own culture or better yet, further explore
another culture. Authors use different themes such as culture, politics, and even personal barriers to

The article: Turning a Book into a Movie: An Author's Perspective, written by Michael Murie as a
summary of a panel, at the Boston Book Festival, in which five authors discussed their experiences
when their books were turned into movies. The five authors were: Nick Flynn, Daniel Handler,
Buzz Bissinger, Rachel Cohn and Andre Dubus III. Just as each of the authors books were different,

in Michael Murie's article Cohn says "It's [the movie] like a two hour advertisement for your [the
author's] book" (Murie). Cohn's quote illustrates the publicity the book gets from the movie, by
comparing it to an advertisement. The movie gets publicity from the book in similar ways. For
example the cover of my paperback copy of J.R. Tolkien's Hobbit exclaims in bold letters "Now a
Major Motion Picture". Not only do both sides get publicity from each other, but both sides also
share in the profit. Authors receive a profit by selling the rights of their book. Movie Producers
make a fortune if the movie is a success.
In addition to the publicity and profit, movie producers also receive a foundation for the movie
and fans from the start, when they base their movies on books. Even though a book provides the
movie producers with a foundation, the book can also stifle creativity. The five authors in
Murie's article all agreed that books do not make good scripts (Murie). Often the fans of the book
transform into fans and supporters of the movie. Interest in the movie is generated before the

The film?s setting was in present and past scenarios, which made it very interesting. As the old
man Duke read the story, in a past plot, and the story began to climax, he would be interrupted by
someone in the nursing staff, bringing them back to the present. This lineup of events leads to a
sense of curiosity as I began to wonder what these two plots have in relation. This curiosity will
soon be fulfilled as the story develops, and the two plots start to intertwine. The director of this
film did a fantastic job in combining these two plots, and giving the audience just enough time to
figure out their relation. He didn?t give it away too soon, or so late that the story got boring or
confusing. He also made very good use of underscoring (background music with no apparent
source) in a previous scene where Allie and Noah where dancing alone in the middle on nowhere,
to the sounds of Billie Holiday. This particular shot was a three minute continuous shot taken with
a camera on a 300ft dolly track. The actors and actresses in this film did a remarkable job in
playing their roles. The language and wardrobe fit the perfect description of a 40?s teenager.
Now, this is what I call a love story. Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook is most

Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren't
too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books
actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading

Every person has their place. The kind of place where the world could be ending but as long as
their in that special place, they can leave the world in peace. For some it's their hometown, the gym,
a certain cafe or restaurant, or even a random spot with a sentimental meaning. For me, this place is
the Edmon Low Library here at Oklahoma State University. As a high school student, the library
was a place to check out books and print papers for free. The idea of spending hours there was
unheard of, and never spiked an interest in me. Once I started my freshman year in college, this

wondered why the dazzling Georgian style library was so overwhelmingly huge. It was in the
heart of osu near the main campus facilities: the Union, Theta Pond, and various classroom
buildings. Being that the library was such a main attraction, I was curious to know why. I
wondered why there was a cafe and why each level had a different noise limit. All of these things
seemed great, but unnecessary at the same time. After all, the only thing the library was good for
in my mind was basic needs for my english class. My first day at osu I decided to see what all the
hype about this special library was. The more I explored the different levels, the more I found.
Not only were there books, free printing, a cafe, and noise accommodations, but there were also
reserved study rooms, 3D printing, subject librarians, free electronic checkouts, and so much more.
The resources available to me and all OSU students from just a library seemed almost too good to
be true.From the restoring smell of coffee on the first floor, to the antique smell of old books on the
4th floor, nothing makes you want to pull out a good book more than Edmon Low. I was almost

depressions and elevations on the cover and text, feeling the weight of the pages as you turn them
and all of these elements when combined make a book what it is, but when you read an e–book you
are exposed to digitized text and a screen. And it's been proven that when people are exposed to

Young children are often taught that lying is one of the most wicked sins that an elementary–aged
student could commit. Somewhere along the transition from kindergarten to adulthood, this fact is
often forgotten, or at the very least, bent. Suddenly lying becomes a thing of habit, and why not?
We live in a world founded on metaphorical cannibalism. In the mad dash to make the grade, to get
ahead, why shouldn't you "BS" a philosophy paper or tweak a resume so that you can bolster your

What I've found through my experience in writing falsely, is that it is a writer's ethical responsibility
to represent herself genuinely in her prose. In abusing the influential power of the pen, the writer
violates not only her own integrity but that of the written word itself. The written word has
immense power over people in ways that speech does not. Readers tend to see an ultimate truth to

The digital age has slowly allowed physical books to be replaced by electronic books and movies. In
the last decade, the decrease in demand for hard copy books have caused numerous bookstores to
pack their bags and go out of business. It took both hope and courage for Josh Spencer to open up
his very own bookstore. On the corner of 5th and Spring street, stood a towering 12–floor structure,
with what seemed like an apartment complex on top and a bookstore below, each made
distinguishable by a stone–flower pattern that bordered the edges of the building. The grey stone
structure had an antique architectural design. Massive windows enclosed by thin black frames
lined the building as rusted black iron gates were left ajar to welcome visitors. Located in the heart

past the bright orange sign that indicated the storefront, beyond the iron gates, and through the glass

Periodically while surfing the internet I encounter a page entitled "Books That Changed My
Life", with a list of books that purportedly changed the life of the author. I am always irritated by
these pages, because I never see any evidence that the books had actually changed the life of the

In junior–high school I bought How to Read a Book, read it, was mightily impressed by it,
acknowledged to myself that the techniques it described were important and valuable ... and then put
the book on the shelf and didn't think about it again.
But in high school, for reasons that I only vaguely remember now, I came to realize that I wasn't a
very effective reader; my reading was scattershot, shallow, and didn't have a lasting effect on me.
As I wrestled with that, I remembered Adler's book (but nothing of what it had said), and decided
to read it again. This time it took; I understood what he was saying and why, and I knew I had to
become the kind of reader he was describing.
Perhaps more important: somewhere in the book Adler mentions Great Books discussion groups. I
looked into it and found that, during the 50s and early 60s there was a fad bordering on a
movement, where groups of average people would actually convene to discuss readings from the
classics of Western literature. Imagine! Next, I found out that an organization had been formed to
support and propagate these groups, the Great Books Foundation, that it still exists, and that it
publishes collections of readings from the Great Books for use by discussion groups.

What Did You Learn From Reading This Book? Essay
1.What did you learn from reading this book? Did you like it? Why or why not? From reading this
book, I learned that there is much more to a person than one may think. Before, I would judge
juvenile delinquents and think of them as nothing more than losers but when I read this book, my
mind completely changed. These teenagers had so much potential and in my opinion could've been
prevented from doing what they did to get themselves in juvenile hall. Predominantly, they've all
came from tough backgrounds and I strongly believe the way they group up has contributed greatly
to the life choices they have made. Unfortunately, these teenagers didn't have role models or any one
to look up too. Another thing I learned was that they were not getting the help they needed. Whether
it was counseling or therapy, those services were not offered to them and they could've been
extremely beneficial. These services could've helped them improve their lives, and helped them deal
with the great amount of stress they experienced. Most importantly, I learned that as a future social
worker I'm most likely going to be dealing with teenagers in similar situations, therefore I must be
patient, open–mined and free of all judgment. Personally, I enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed it

Reading And Reading : My Experience Of Reading
My first experience with reading is when my mom taught me, I was about 4 and I read Junie B
Jones. It was very hard for me to remember what letters made what sounds at first, but after that I
was reading at a fluent pace (For a 4 year old). About a year later I was in kindergarten and they were
teaching us how to read, I felt like God because I was better than everyone else because I already
knew how until this one kid told me he knew how to. Then it became a competition to see who
could read the fastest. I lost. Fast forward to about 4th grade, we had a very strict teacher who
believed in older ways of teaching. That included yelling and being mean. Evidently she's still
one of the best teachers I've ever had. She would make us read a book every 2 weeks and write a
book report on it. A lot of kids didn't do better in English because of this style of teaching, but I
think it helped me become a much better reader. I always remember getting upset because a kid
couldn't fluently read a book out loud to the class. I always thought I could do it better than everyone
else, but it turns out I was just a really snobby impatient 10 year old. In 5th grade I read the first

Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and
is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to
begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a
strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun
and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time
they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a
good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more

You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the
same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was
intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing
are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't
personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the
most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and

I have recently read a very good book that has impacted my life in a very positive way. A Walk to
Remember made me look at life in such a different way. The book was so well written and had

Growing up, I always had my mom and dad beside my side. I was blessed with such a good
childhood that I had no idea how much I was taking it for granted. I knew that death was inevitable
and that anyone could be taken away in a blink of an eye, but I never really thought that it could
