How do we get there
All these problems - - funding, communuity support, railroad, politcs…In 67’ there was discussion of reopening for auto traffic, as the Memphis Arkansas Bridge would get backed up. In 71’ there was a strong push led by a guy named Poppenhiemer In 75’ it was again proposed by MATCOG (MS. AR. TN. Coalition of Governments) In 99’ there was another effort. Cindy Buchanan, Marty Regan, Susan Jones and others had a meeting with UP.Benny Lendermon, and Larry Smith may have been involved as well.UP was emphatically against the idea, bringing a host of lawyers to the meeting to douse the fire.None of the Memphis folks involved know about the deeds of ownership. Darrell Eldred told me there was a group that looked at it quietly in the 80’s.He told me they knew about the deeds, but decided not pursue it.I found no newspaper articles and no one else has told me about this effort???
