known as capital punishment,
is the lawful imposition of
death as punishment for
crimes. It is the act of killing
or executing an individual
who is found guilty of a
serious crime, by the
government.

- The death penalty started in the colonial times.
- Methods that were used to kill individuals were
hanging, beheading, quartering, boiling and stoning.
- Executions were carried out for such capital
offenses as marrying a Jew, not confessing to a
crime, and treason.

• In Indiana, the total cost of the death penalty is
38% greater than the total cost of life without
parole.
• In New York, it costs approximately $23 million
per person.
• In Tennessee, the death penalty trials cost 48%
more than a life sentence trial(Bedau and
Cassell).
