2. There is much discussion about the benefits of growing and
using organic products in our day-to-day lives.
Most commonly, ‘organic’ is used when discussing our food
products, but in reality, we now have far more
opportunities to include organic products in all aspects of
our lives.
Organic essential oils are no exception. This article has been
written to answer a few common questions about organic
products, and particularly, organic essential oils.
3. First: What is organic?
The dictionary definition of organic is, “grown without
artificial fertilizers or pesticides”.
Although this may be an official definition, it does not
adequately encapsulate the depth or intricacy of the
organic growing and farming experience.
4. Second: What is an essential oil?
An essential oil is a substance extracted from plant parts
(stems, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, bark).
This is normally done through water distillation or steam,
although sometimes processed using hexane, carbon
dioxide or fats.
5. Third: Is organic better?
We think so. Over the past few years sourcing high quality
organic essential oils has become vastly simpler.
A higher number of organic farmers are producing organic
plant material for use in the creation of essential oils
making it more accessible to consumers.
Organic is not simply “chemical free agriculture”; it is a way
of growing, preparing, processing and packaging products
for sale and consumption.
6. Fourth: In what circumstances would you use an essential oil?
They are many and varied. Essential oils can be used as a part of
a natural healing program based on the understanding that
opposing elements can be used together to create a balanced
and healthy life. For example:
If you are feeling low, have little energy or are experiencing
physical, mental or emotional blocks, a STIMULATING oil may be
utilised to bring balance. Stimulating essential oils include:
ginger, black pepper, and rosemary.
If you are experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, hypertension or
distraction, a CALMING oil may be recommended. Lavender,
sandalwood and chamomile are commonly used in these
circumstances.
7. Fifth: Can you ‘over use’ and essential oil?
It is very unlikely that you would ever ‘overuse’ an oil.
Sometimes concentrations of your chosen oil may be a bit
too high (causing irritation) or too low (no measurable
enhancement to energy or concentration levels is noticed)
but it cannot really be termed over use.
8. The use of essential oils and aromas (as in aromatherapy)
has an exceptionally long history in Eastern medical and
spiritual traditions, as well as in Africa, the Middle East and
the pagan cultures of the West.
We have been “un-conditioned” to the traditional uses of
essential aromas in natural healing, and now, more than
ever, we need to embrace the knowledge and the gifts that
Mother Nature has provided.
9. “Nature is doing her best each moment to make us well.
She exists for no other end. Do not resist. With the least
inclination to be well, we should not be sick.” - Henry David
Thoreau
