Moral Quotes In Macbeth
"Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires"(I, 4, 52–53) This is exactly what
the stars did in Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth wanted Happiness in his life but to get
that he used moral sacrifices that led to his demise and no purpose of living. This is demonstrated
in the dagger speech and the Tomorrow speech that will be discussed showing his ambition for
power and happiness to his demise. In the dagger speech (II, 1, 33–64) William Shakespeare conveys
the message that Macbeth's ambition overrides his morals to accomplish what he wants and what he
thinks will give him happiness. In lines 33–41 of the dagger speech it portrays the message that
Macbeth's guilt is tearing him apart from the thought of what he is going to do. Shakespeare uses
apostrophe of the dagger to convey the message. In the speech Macbeth addresses the dagger as if
it was a person. This allows the audience to see the moral conflict of inside of Macbeth. Showing
that he knows what he wants to do is wrong causing him to see what is not actually there.
Shakespeare also uses rhetorical questions such as "The handle toward my...show more content...
In lines 17–23 the message conveyed is everyday is just another day closer to your death that is
inevitable. This is shown by the repetition of tomorrow when Macbeth says " tomorrow, and
tomorrow, and tomorrow."(19) This shows the dread of going onto the next day because it will
not lead to anything different. Macbeth also uses a cold tone that is conveyed when he says " She
should have died hereafter."(17) This allows the audience to see how disconnected Macbeth is
because Macbeth feels that everyone is similar and it doesn't matter what happens. Finally,
Shakespeare uses depressing diction to such as "petty"(20), "fools"(22) and "dusty."(23) This shows
how low Macbeth views life and people as a

Macbeth
Macbeth takes place in Scotland "Great king, I've come from Fife..."(1.2 page 3)
Macbeth is the main character. He was a general in the army of King Duncan. Macbeth was
originally Thane of Glamis, then Thane of Cawdor, and later King of Scotland.
" All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, thane of Glamis"(1.3 page3)
"All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, thane of Cawdor!" (1.3 page 3)
" All hail, Macbeth, the future king!"(1.3 page 3)
The story focuses on Macbeth wanting to become the king so he plans to kill the king when the
king comes over for a stay at his house. He has a good relationship with his wife who act as humble
host and hostess. "Now I'm decided, and I will exert every muscle in my body to commit this crime.
Go now, and pretend to be a friendly hostess. Hide with a false pleasant face what you know in your
false, evil heart."(1.7 page 4)

One evening while celebrating at the castle his best friend Banquo , a former general mysteriously

him suddenly is filled with terror and anger. Even his once friends turn against him. From that
moment on families are torn apart. People you think you can trust suddenly turn against you.

Theme Of Jealousy In Macbeth
Jealousy is the root of many evils and sometimes this strong emotion can cloud up judgement.
Jealousy is a part of human nature and can be observed from the time of early civilizations to now,
even some of the most important people like Mark Antony have experienced it too. A once brave
and noble Macbeth became selfish and caught up in his own desires. Although he fulfilled those
desires he kept wanting more and was jealous of others. Macbeth's jealousy has lead him to a point
where he is taking extreme actions without considering the outcome. Macbeth is so blind by his
desire that he is challenging and attempting to change fate in his favour. Macbeth's personality has
taken a drastic shift, and all he understands is what he wants and how to...show more content...
To depict Macbeth's changed attitude and personality Shakespeare uses strong connotation, imagery
and allusion in the soliloquy. Macbeth has gotten what he desired, however he knows his time as
king is not long lasting. He soon realizes that murdering Duncan benefited Banquo more than
himself. Not only is Macbeth jealous of Banquo but also "fears in Banquo/stick deep, and his royalty
in nature"(Shakespeare 3.1.49–50). The imagery in this quotation helps the audience understand
how fearful Macbeth is toward Banquo's royal nature. Here "Deep stick" is indicating the intensity
and amount of fear Macbeth feels, word choice also emphasizes the importance of this quotation.
It makes the audience realize even as king with an abundance of power, he is still fearful of this
one man. Macbeth is also worried about Banquo's royal nature because he knows that Banquo has
lots of wisdom and is willing to takes risks. Banquo has a strong personality that Macbeth finds a
threat. Macbeth admitted that " There is none but he/Whose being I do fear"(Shakespeare
3.1.54–55). Shakespeare does not state what Macbeth specifically thinks about how he is being
plotted against. It may not be

Macbeth Power Quotes
Bloody Deeds and Power
Power, admiration and wealth are all things that people yearn for. It's human nature to prove one's
superiority over others around you. People in politics lie and deceive, making promises that they
aren't going to keep. They say what they believe others would like to hear in order to gain favor of
the voters. Macbeth was written in Elizabethan England during the rule of King James. William
Shakespeare's company was under the King James' patronage, giving him the incentive to write
something that would please the King. Several themes throughout Macbeth appeal to King James,
such as the fact that betrayal of the King ends in misery. Macbeth was content with being a brave
war hero, but then becomes motivated by the idea...show more content...
Lady Macbeth is convincing herself to kill King Duncan. "unsex me here...Of direst cruelty.
Make thick my blood"(1.5.48,50). Lady Macbeth's misconstrued idea of what it means to be a
man prevents Macbeth from truly comprehending what is important. While trying to fit into Lady
Macbeth's ideal of manliness he himself becomes detached from reality and his emotions.
Macbeth's response to the witches prophecy coming true. " I have almost forgotten the taste of
fears"(5.5.11). He feels as though the mass of power he has collected has and will continue to
protect him. He then hears of Lady Macbeth's suicide from her guilt."She should have died
hereafter"(5.5.17). This is quite significant because the correct response would be grief, but
instead he feels nothing for someone he once loved further showing how the greed for power has
corrupted him. The important thing he should have learned is loyalty should take precedence
over want for power, or ambition doesn't have to relate to cruelty. Macduff can be considered a
foil to Macbeth; after his family dies "But I must also feel it as a man" (4.3.261). The idea given
by Macduff is being a man doesn't mean you are only cruel and don't care about the consequences.
It's possible to feel feminine things and still be considered a man. It

Quotes On Greed In Macbeth
Essay draft.
Greed always has its negative consequences, and in Macbeth's case, it took a drastic negative
effect on him and his kingdom and it took a strong toll on him. This play is about a noble warrior
and his downfall. After an encounter with some witches, he was informed about his future, causing
something to snap in his soul. Now that we know of his future, he will do whatever it takes to
accomplish his future even if it means crossing over to the dark side. After many murders to get
what he wants, he becomes greedier, unstable. A psycho with unlimited power, and with this much

Macbeth felt exactly that, but he was way over his head. When lady Macbeth was trying to trick
him, he was powerless, tied and cannot do anything, but things have changed and it became the
opposite, well that is how it starts, the fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good
men, cruel. To explore even more he is what Macbeth had to say(Act five, Scene three) " I will
fight to the death, get me my armor" with everything happening, the war and the witches
misleading prophecies, Macbeth has every right to feel invincible. Macbeth had nothing to lose so
it would not bother him if he fought to the death which he was sure would never happen, the all
powerful, all mighty Macbeth that would not be rivaled by anyone. He was sure that he was going
out there and decimate everyone win the war with ease and rule the kingdom with an iron fist,
because he thought everything the witches told him were straight out of fairytales. Again Macbeth
has shown that there is no one better or powerful than him and that a forest moving is just
unbelievable. Here is what Macbeth said(Act five, Scene three), " I won't be afraid until birnam
woods moves to dunsinane hill" with that being said, the witches have planted this thought in his

Quotes About Macbeth's Character
In the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is a very respected individual but he only
seems to be honourable; at heart, he is a man who is willing to do anything to become the king. At
the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a respected general, and a loyal subject of the king. The first
of the witches' prophecies brings out his ambitious nature. His ruthlessness in killing Banquo and
Macduff's family shows how perverted his idea of manliness really is and it brings out his ambition
to fulfill his potential for his leadership. By the end of the play, Macbeth has turned into an evil
person, and totally inhumane in his actions. Macbeth is a very courageous warrior and after the
battle, the Captain describes how well Macbeth did and it makes him feel like he has done his best
and is going to do even better in the future. At the start of the play, Macbeth sounds like the super
soldier in the battle against the enemy. The captain reports that Macbeth carved through enemy
soldiers until he reached the traitor Macdonwald and cut him open. This makes Macbeth seem like
he is a very noble and courageous warrior. Also, when the Captain says, "For brave Macbeth –

In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth, the protagonist,, although has the mindset of

Macbeth feels that he should not take action against King Duncan. Instead he should let fate takes its
course in making him King. On the other hand Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to take action which
eventually leads to his demise. Later on Macbeth begins to toy with the idea of murder after being
convinced by Lady Macbeth that it is the right thing to do. Eventually, Macbeth's immorality takes

the prior influences she had on him. Ultimately, even though...show more content...
By allowing himself to be persuaded by Lady Macbeth to commit multiple murders, he ultimately

they are about to have with Banquo, their former friend, Macbeth says, "Be innocent of the

that he is planning on killing Banquo, but Lady Macbeth does not need to be involved in the
murder this time; she can just sit back and watch the murder unfold. This is highlighting the fact
that at this point in the play Macbeth does not need anyone to guide him to do the wrong thing.
Lady Macbeth has already done her job and now she has impacted Macbeth so much that he knows
what to do on his own. Macbeth has passed the point of no return and has now become and immoral

all morality and becomes the evil murderer that he

Macbeth Fear Quotes
Fear, this moves us to do many things no matter if they are against or for our morals. In the play The
Tragedy of Macbeth it was fear that was the main deciding factor that themed throughout this play.
This can be proved by the other murders that happened after King Duncan's. These murders were
committed, because Macbeth was scared of being caught and having to serve justice for the crimes
he had committed. And as for Lady Macbeth, she washes her hands all the time trying to get the
blood that is no longer on her hands off and sleepwalking, all of what she does is out of her own fear.
All of Macbeth's actions were due to fear of not only of being caught but of the witches' vision. He
was worried of them coming true and tried to stop them from becoming true. This play was inspired

her hands. Also she talks about going to hell for what she has done. Lady Macbeth was
persuading Macbeth to murder Duncan but as the story continues she has become smaller figure
and Macbeth has became a bigger figure and thrived, Macbeth isn't weakened for what he has
committed or done as Lady Macbeth feels. As she is being driven mad and over the edge with the
guilt she feels, her part becomes less and less to the point where she kills herself hoping to end the
suffering stress on her mind. "The Queen, my Lord is dead" [Act V, S 5, L 18], Lady Macbeth has

Body Paragraph On Macbeth

Macbeth is the main character in this Play, he is at the beginning a guy who seems emotionless

proud of him.To achieve all his goals he tries everything to become a friend of the king, duncan, and
is really nice to him even thought he just has the ultimate power in his mind. After a while Macbeth
is getting tired of always being nice and faking everything so his wife is trying to persuade him to

thoughts about being king in his mind, with his wife many people want to convince him to kill

Macbeth Fleance Quotes
Fleance does not return back to Macbeth's castle shows that he has control over his own fate by
opposing to the future that the witches had seen in their prophecy. "Thou shalt get kings, though
thou be none" (act1 scene3 line 70) In the beginning of the play the witches had foretell Banquo that
his sons will become the king. Macbeth strongly believes in the witches prophecy. He commits
murder against Banquo and Fleance in order to fight against the destiny that the witches had
prophesied. "Thou may 'st revenge –O slave!"(act scene line) Banquo urges Fleance to escape and
someday to take revenge of this gory tragedy. The reader expects Fleance to return to Macbeth's
castle to take revenge by murdering Macbeth similarly like he had done to his father. Though, the
reader loses where he had fled in the story after he had escaped from that scene. This may show
that he would not become the king. As the witches recite in the beginning of the play. "Fair is foul,
foul is fair"(act scene line), Macbeth acts as what the witches had said. He is brainwashed by the
evil spirits, he has no more control over himself. He believes that he is doing the right thing but he is
actually trapping himself in a difficult situation. Although, both Banquo and Fleance opposes to this

Greed Quotes In Macbeth
They say greed is the root of all evil. This is especially shown in Macbeth, the desire of power
becomes an apparent symbol throughout the play. How does a man loyal to the king turn so easily
from the slight temptation of the crown. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth is seen picturing an
imaginary dagger, "Is this a dagger which I see before me,/ The handle toward my hand? Come, let
me clutch thee." (2.1.33–34 Macbeth) Macbeth isn't even seen remorseful for the cruel deed he just
commits; to a man who he swore an oath of loyalty to. Macbeth shows signs of greed and gluttony as
the infatuation of power settles in him throughout the plot.
Macbeth first shows signs of change when he becomes Thane of Cawdor. While Macbeth first
meets the witches they tell him he will be king and he wishes to know more. "Why/upon this
blasted heath you stop our way/ with such a prophetic greeting? Speak I charge you." (1.3.77–78)
When Macbeth hears he will be king he becomes instantly curious and sparks a interest on the
prospect of becoming king. This is when he first begins to show the signs of his greed. This is
shown even further when Macbeth is told he was Thane of Cawdor and acts hopeful, "If chance will
have me king,/ why chance may crown me" (1.3.143–144) Knowing the witches said he would soon
become Thane of Cawdor now Macbeth has a purpose and a drive knowing what's next in store for
him. This is shown within his letter to Macbeth "that though might've not lose the dues of rejoicing,
by being integral of what greatness is sponsored thee/" (1.5.8–9) Here he states to lady macbeth he
doesn't want to waste his chance and lose out on the greatness of becoming king. All of these quotes
show Macbeth slip to the side of darkness by wanting to become king.
After murdering Duncan Macbeth starts to change into a pathological manipulator. He is shown
doing this when he kills the guards to frame them for the murder of Duncan "Oh yet I do repent
me of my fury, that did kill them." (2.3.97) Macbeth is already planning ahead for the suspects by
killing the people who would most likely be accused for the murder, and to think just days ago he
was the king's right hand man. Macbeth is able to convince Macduff that he murdered

Macbeth Quotes About Ambition
Macbeth: Ambition
Ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve something, "typically requiring determination and
hard work." Macbeth is a play where most people will read and learn as they go through their lives.
Macbeth starts as an honorable warrior, but throughout the time his wife Lady Macbeth makes him
become an ambitious person.
His ambition starts off when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth want to take over the throne. Lady
Macbeth makes him kill King Duncan immediately. In the play it also quotes about Macbeth's
ambition in him:
"I have no spur/ To prick the sides of my intent, but only/ Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself
/ and falls on the other."
Macbeth is telling her to be honest and admit that there was not a good reason to kill Duncan.

Witchcraft Quotes In Macbeth
The Tragedy of Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare during the early 1600s. The play is
set in Scotland. The main character, Macbeth, is influenced by the witches' prophecies and decides
to kill Duncan, the current king, to become king. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a loyal
and trustworthy thane. After encountering the witches, he became a traitor who would kill anyone to
be king. The witches practice witchcraft, which is the practice of magic that uses spells and calls
spirits. It well known during this period. Many people associate witchcraft with evil and demons
because of their satanic rituals. They also believed that witches worshipped the Devil. Throughout
the play, witchcraft is portrayed as evil from the chaos created by the witches and is shown through
Macbeth. One way witchcraft is displayed in the play are the prophecies made by the witches. "All
hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (Mac
1.3.49–50). In this quote, the witches are telling Macbeth his future. At first, Macbeth did not
completely believe in the witches' words, but after the first prediction comes true, he decided to trust
them. After Macbeth and Banquo, his best friend, meet the witches, Rosse, a Scottish nobleman,
found Macbeth and told him about his achievement. "He bade me, from him, call the Thane of
Cawdor; In which addition, hail, most worthy thane, For it is thine" (Mac 1.3.105–107). This helped
Macbeth put his belief in the prophecies because two of the three predictions are now true. His
faith in witchcraft played a role in his decisions and actions later in the play. The practice of rituals
was also used to portray witchcraft in the story. A ritual is a ceremony where actions are performed
according to an order. This was a way for witches to worship the Devil. "The rituals ... often involved
... the mutilation of human beings and animals, the murder of children" (Levack 929). Macbeth goes
to the witches and demands answers to reassure what he was feeling. Because Macbeth is filled with
guilt and paranoia, he wanted to ensure that nothing would take interfere with his ambition.
Therefore, the witches perform a ritual to create

How did you feel when you had to decide if the reward was worth the risk? What considerations
did you have to make? What was your ultimate decision and its outcome? Was it worth it in the
end? One time I had this goal of getting ahead in science so I was going to tale honors chemistry
online during the summer, and the summer between freshmen and sophomore year was the only
time I could do it, but I had been so busy, that I forgot about the class until there were only three
weeks of summer left. I was then worried that going so fast in the class to finish it would make
me fail it, but I decided that finishing was better that skipping the opportunity. I felt scared, I had
to figure out if it was worth doing all the extra work, if it might be all for nothing. I decide to do it
and it turned out great I ended up finishing it just in time, I could move forward in my science

Macbeth Fair Quotes
The theme "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" means that everything is not alway what it seems.
In Shakespeare's play Macbeth, the theme is played throughout the entire play. Three examples are;
Act 1, scene 1, line 10, spoken by all three witches, Act I, scene 4 lines 11–12, spoken by King
Duncan and lastly, Act 1, scene 6, lines 1–3, spoken by King Duncan. Macbeth and Banquo are
frightened by the ugly appearance of the three witches when they first see them. The witches chant
"fair is foul, and foul is fair, Hover through the fog and filthy air", (Act 1, scene 1, line 10, spoken
by the witches), after Macbeth is over the initial shock of the witches' hideous appearance, he begins
to talk with them. The witches are known to be "evil...show more content...
This quote refers to when Malcolm speaks of the death of the Thane of Cowdor. At first King
Duncan thought the Thane of Cowdor was nice and loyal to him (fair), then he learns that he was
betrayed by him (foul). Because of the Thane's action, he was executed for treason which made
Macbeth the new Thane of Cowdor. Little did Duncan know that Macbeth and his wife would also
betray him by murdering him. King Duncan arrives at Macbeth's castle with Malcolm, Donalbain,
Banquo, Lennox, Macduff, Ross and Angus. He comments "This castle hath a pleasant seat. The air
Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself Unto our gentle senses" (Act 1, scene, 6, lines 1–3). Though
he comments on the sweetness air and pleasant atmosphere (fair), little does he know ironically the
castle will later reek of death later that evening (foul). Also, Banquo notices martlets who build their
nest within the castle. This displays a place of warmth and welcome (fair). Once again, King
Duncan has no idea how much danger he is in. He innocently goes to the castle like a lamb to the
slaughter

MacBeth Quotes Analysis
1. So fair and foul a day I have not seen
Macbeth to Banquo
At the heath, after the battle, before they meet the witches
I had never seen a day with such terrible weather, but with great outcomes in battle.
Pathetic fallacy: weather reflecting the atmosphere/events of the story. If the weather is bad, bad
things will happen. Soon after Macbeth says this, the three witches show up and tell him prophecies
which he will act upon and pay for with his life.
Foreshadowing: the bad weather signifies that something bad will happen.
2. But'tis strange, and oftentimes, to win us to our harm, the instruments of darkness tell us truths;
win us with honest trifles, to betray's in deepest consequences.
Banquo to Macbeth

Macbeth to Lady Macbeth
After the murder of Duncan, Macbeth is talking to Lady Macbeth about the event
I thought I heard a voice say "you can sleep no more, Macbeth is murdering sleep"
Reveals character: Macbeth thinks it is his conscience, telling him he can 't sleep anymore due to his
guilt. He is starting to emotionally break down.
8. ...the sleeping and the dead are but as pictures; tis the eye of childhood that fears a painted devil...
Lady Macbeth to Macbeth
After the murder of Duncan, Macbeth is talking to Lady Macbeth about the event
Sleeping and dead people can't hurt you any more than pictures can. Only children are afraid of
scary pictures.
Theme 1–appearances can be deceiving: dead people may look scary but they can't hurt anyone.
9. ...here lay Duncan, his silver skin lac'd with his golden blood and his gash'd stabs look'd like a
breach in nature...
Macbeth to Macduff, Lennox, Malcolm, Donalbain, Banquo, Lady Macbeth (everyone at the murder
scene)
After Macbeth killed Duncan's servants, explaining why he killed them
There was Duncan, his white skin all splattered with his precious blood. The gashes where the
knives had cut him looked like wounds to nature itself.
Theme 3–overturning the natural order of things is bad: Duncan is being compared to nature itself,
killing him will have no good outcome
10. To show an unfelt sorrow is an office which the

  • 1. Moral Quotes In Macbeth "Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires"(I, 4, 52–53) This is exactly what the stars did in Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth wanted Happiness in his life but to get that he used moral sacrifices that led to his demise and no purpose of living. This is demonstrated in the dagger speech and the Tomorrow speech that will be discussed showing his ambition for power and happiness to his demise. In the dagger speech (II, 1, 33–64) William Shakespeare conveys the message that Macbeth's ambition overrides his morals to accomplish what he wants and what he thinks will give him happiness. In lines 33–41 of the dagger speech it portrays the message that Macbeth's guilt is tearing him apart from the thought of what he is going to do. Shakespeare uses apostrophe of the dagger to convey the message. In the speech Macbeth addresses the dagger as if it was a person. This allows the audience to see the moral conflict of inside of Macbeth. Showing that he knows what he wants to do is wrong causing him to see what is not actually there. Shakespeare also uses rhetorical questions such as "The handle toward my...show more content... In lines 17–23 the message conveyed is everyday is just another day closer to your death that is inevitable. This is shown by the repetition of tomorrow when Macbeth says " tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow."(19) This shows the dread of going onto the next day because it will not lead to anything different. Macbeth also uses a cold tone that is conveyed when he says " She should have died hereafter."(17) This allows the audience to see how disconnected Macbeth is because Macbeth feels that everyone is similar and it doesn't matter what happens. Finally, Shakespeare uses depressing diction to such as "petty"(20), "fools"(22) and "dusty."(23) This shows how low Macbeth views life and people as a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Macbeth was originally Thane of Glamis, then Thane of Cawdor, and later King of Scotland. " All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, thane of Glamis"(1.3 page3) "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, thane of Cawdor!" (1.3 page 3) " All hail, Macbeth, the future king!"(1.3 page 3) The story focuses on Macbeth wanting to become the king so he plans to kill the king when the king comes over for a stay at his house. He has a good relationship with his wife who act as humble host and hostess. "Now I'm decided, and I will exert every muscle in my body to commit this crime. • 3. Theme Of Jealousy In Macbeth Jealousy is the root of many evils and sometimes this strong emotion can cloud up judgement. Jealousy is a part of human nature and can be observed from the time of early civilizations to now, even some of the most important people like Mark Antony have experienced it too. A once brave and noble Macbeth became selfish and caught up in his own desires. Although he fulfilled those desires he kept wanting more and was jealous of others. Macbeth's jealousy has lead him to a point where he is taking extreme actions without considering the outcome. Macbeth is so blind by his desire that he is challenging and attempting to change fate in his favour. Macbeth's personality has taken a drastic shift, and all he understands is what he wants and how to...show more content... To depict Macbeth's changed attitude and personality Shakespeare uses strong connotation, imagery and allusion in the soliloquy. Macbeth has gotten what he desired, however he knows his time as king is not long lasting. He soon realizes that murdering Duncan benefited Banquo more than himself. Not only is Macbeth jealous of Banquo but also "fears in Banquo/stick deep, and his royalty in nature"(Shakespeare 3.1.49–50). The imagery in this quotation helps the audience understand how fearful Macbeth is toward Banquo's royal nature. Here "Deep stick" is indicating the intensity and amount of fear Macbeth feels, word choice also emphasizes the importance of this quotation. It makes the audience realize even as king with an abundance of power, he is still fearful of this one man. Macbeth is also worried about Banquo's royal nature because he knows that Banquo has lots of wisdom and is willing to takes risks. Banquo has a strong personality that Macbeth finds a threat. Macbeth admitted that " There is none but he/Whose being I do fear"(Shakespeare 3.1.54–55). Shakespeare does not state what Macbeth specifically thinks about how he is being plotted against. • 4. Macbeth Power Quotes Bloody Deeds and Power Power, admiration and wealth are all things that people yearn for. It's human nature to prove one's superiority over others around you. People in politics lie and deceive, making promises that they aren't going to keep. They say what they believe others would like to hear in order to gain favor of the voters. Macbeth was written in Elizabethan England during the rule of King James. William Shakespeare's company was under the King James' patronage, giving him the incentive to write something that would please the King. Several themes throughout Macbeth appeal to King James, such as the fact that betrayal of the King ends in misery. Macbeth was content with being a brave war hero, but then becomes motivated by the idea...show more content... Lady Macbeth is convincing herself to kill King Duncan. "unsex me here...Of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood"(1.5.48,50). Lady Macbeth's misconstrued idea of what it means to be a man prevents Macbeth from truly comprehending what is important. While trying to fit into Lady Macbeth's ideal of manliness he himself becomes detached from reality and his emotions. Macbeth's response to the witches prophecy coming true. " I have almost forgotten the taste of fears"(5.5.11). He feels as though the mass of power he has collected has and will continue to protect him. He then hears of Lady Macbeth's suicide from her guilt."She should have died hereafter"(5.5.17). This is quite significant because the correct response would be grief, but instead he feels nothing for someone he once loved further showing how the greed for power has corrupted him. The important thing he should have learned is loyalty should take precedence over want for power, or ambition doesn't have to relate to cruelty. Macduff can be considered a foil to Macbeth; after his family dies "But I must also feel it as a man" (4.3.261). The idea given by Macduff is being a man doesn't mean you are only cruel and don't care about the consequences. It's possible to feel feminine things and still be considered a man. • 6. Quotes On Greed In Macbeth Essay draft. Greed always has its negative consequences, and in Macbeth's case, it took a drastic negative effect on him and his kingdom and it took a strong toll on him. This play is about a noble warrior and his downfall. After an encounter with some witches, he was informed about his future, causing something to snap in his soul. Now that we know of his future, he will do whatever it takes to accomplish his future even if it means crossing over to the dark side. After many murders to get what he wants, he becomes greedier, unstable. When lady Macbeth was trying to trick him, he was powerless, tied and cannot do anything, but things have changed and it became the opposite, well that is how it starts, the fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men, cruel. To explore even more he is what Macbeth had to say(Act five, Scene three) " I will fight to the death, get me my armor" with everything happening, the war and the witches misleading prophecies, Macbeth has every right to feel invincible. Macbeth had nothing to lose so it would not bother him if he fought to the death which he was sure would never happen, the all powerful, all mighty Macbeth that would not be rivaled by anyone. He was sure that he was going out there and decimate everyone win the war with ease and rule the kingdom with an iron fist, because he thought everything the witches told him were straight out of fairytales. Again Macbeth has shown that there is no one better or powerful than him and that a forest moving is just unbelievable. Here is what Macbeth said(Act five, Scene three), " I won't be afraid until birnam woods moves to dunsinane hill" with that being said, the witches have planted this thought in his mind that a for. • 7. Quotes About Macbeth's Character In the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is a very respected individual but he only seems to be honourable; at heart, he is a man who is willing to do anything to become the king. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a respected general, and a loyal subject of the king. The first of the witches' prophecies brings out his ambitious nature. His ruthlessness in killing Banquo and Macduff's family shows how perverted his idea of manliness really is and it brings out his ambition to fulfill his potential for his leadership. By the end of the play, Macbeth has turned into an evil person, and totally inhumane in his actions. Macbeth is a very courageous warrior and after the battle, the Captain describes how well Macbeth did and it makes him feel like he has done his best and is going to do even better in the future. At the start of the play, Macbeth sounds like the super soldier in the battle against the enemy. The captain reports that Macbeth carved through enemy soldiers until he reached the traitor Macdonwald and cut him open. This makes Macbeth seem like he is a very noble and courageous warrior. Also, when the Captain says, "For brave Macbeth – ...show more content... First of all, Macbeth is a very noble human being and a great warrior. • 10. Macbeth Fear Quotes Fear, this moves us to do many things no matter if they are against or for our morals. In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth it was fear that was the main deciding factor that themed throughout this play. This can be proved by the other murders that happened after King Duncan's. These murders were committed, because Macbeth was scared of being caught and having to serve justice for the crimes he had committed. And as for Lady Macbeth, she washes her hands all the time trying to get the blood that is no longer on her hands off and sleepwalking, all of what she does is out of her own fear. All of Macbeth's actions were due to fear of not only of being caught but of the witches' vision. He was worried of them coming true and tried to stop them from becoming true. • 12. Macbeth Fleance Quotes Fleance does not return back to Macbeth's castle shows that he has control over his own fate by opposing to the future that the witches had seen in their prophecy. "Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none" (act1 scene3 line 70) In the beginning of the play the witches had foretell Banquo that his sons will become the king. Macbeth strongly believes in the witches prophecy. He commits murder against Banquo and Fleance in order to fight against the destiny that the witches had prophesied. "Thou may 'st revenge –O slave!"(act scene line) Banquo urges Fleance to escape and someday to take revenge of this gory tragedy. The reader expects Fleance to return to Macbeth's castle to take revenge by murdering Macbeth similarly like he had done to his father. Though, the reader loses where he had fled in the story after he had escaped from that scene. This may show that he would not become the king. As the witches recite in the beginning of the play. "Fair is foul, foul is fair"(act scene line), Macbeth acts as what the witches had said. He is brainwashed by the evil spirits, he has no more control over himself. • 13. Greed Quotes In Macbeth They say greed is the root of all evil. This is especially shown in Macbeth, the desire of power becomes an apparent symbol throughout the play. How does a man loyal to the king turn so easily from the slight temptation of the crown. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth is seen picturing an imaginary dagger, "Is this a dagger which I see before me,/ The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee." (2.1.33–34 Macbeth) Macbeth isn't even seen remorseful for the cruel deed he just commits; to a man who he swore an oath of loyalty to. Macbeth shows signs of greed and gluttony as the infatuation of power settles in him throughout the plot. Macbeth first shows signs of change when he becomes Thane of Cawdor. While Macbeth first meets the witches they tell him he will be king and he wishes to know more. "Why/upon this blasted heath you stop our way/ with such a prophetic greeting? Speak I charge you." (1.3.77–78) When Macbeth hears he will be king he becomes instantly curious and sparks a interest on the prospect of becoming king. This is when he first begins to show the signs of his greed. This is shown even further when Macbeth is told he was Thane of Cawdor and acts hopeful, "If chance will have me king,/ why chance may crown me" (1.3.143–144) Knowing the witches said he would soon become Thane of Cawdor now Macbeth has a purpose and a drive knowing what's next in store for him. This is shown within his letter to Macbeth "that though might've not lose the dues of rejoicing, by being integral of what greatness is sponsored thee/" (1.5.8–9) Here he states to lady macbeth he doesn't want to waste his chance and lose out on the greatness of becoming king. All of these quotes show Macbeth slip to the side of darkness by wanting to become king. After murdering Duncan Macbeth starts to change into a pathological manipulator. He is shown doing this when he kills the guards to frame them for the murder of Duncan "Oh yet I do repent me of my fury, that did kill them." (2.3.97) Macbeth is already planning ahead for the suspects by killing the people who would most likely be accused for the murder, and to think just days ago he was the king's right hand man. • 17. Witchcraft Quotes In Macbeth The Tragedy of Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare during the early 1600s. The play is set in Scotland. The main character, Macbeth, is influenced by the witches' prophecies and decides to kill Duncan, the current king, to become king. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a loyal and trustworthy thane. After encountering the witches, he became a traitor who would kill anyone to be king. The witches practice witchcraft, which is the practice of magic that uses spells and calls spirits. It well known during this period. Many people associate witchcraft with evil and demons because of their satanic rituals. They also believed that witches worshipped the Devil. Throughout the play, witchcraft is portrayed as evil from the chaos created by the witches and is shown through Macbeth. One way witchcraft is displayed in the play are the prophecies made by the witches. "All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (Mac 1.3.49–50). In this quote, the witches are telling Macbeth his future. At first, Macbeth did not completely believe in the witches' words, but after the first prediction comes true, he decided to trust them. After Macbeth and Banquo, his best friend, meet the witches, Rosse, a Scottish nobleman, found Macbeth and told him about his achievement. "He bade me, from him, call the Thane of Cawdor; In which addition, hail, most worthy thane, For it is thine" (Mac 1.3.105–107). This helped Macbeth put his belief in the prophecies because two of the three predictions are now true. His faith in witchcraft played a role in his decisions and actions later in the play. The practice of rituals was also used to portray witchcraft in the story. A ritual is a ceremony where actions are performed according to an order. This was a way for witches to worship the Devil. "The rituals ... often involved ... the mutilation of human beings and animals, the murder of children" (Levack 929). Macbeth goes to the witches and demands answers to reassure what he was feeling. Because Macbeth is filled with guilt and paranoia, he wanted to ensure that nothing would take interfere with his ambition.
