What is transportation? The moving of something from one place to another; through the air, in the water, and across the land.
airplane Sorting into Groups – Part 1 Pass out either a vocabulary or  picture cards to each student.  Optional: Play music   Tell students to find their partner by finding someone with the matching card.
Sorting into Groups – Part 2 Students will then as partners find the area marked off in the room for their transportation category. Optional: Play music ,[object Object]

Hands-On Activities ,[object Object],Students will create a paper airplane from several different kinds of paper and test which planes fly the best.  Students will also test different folding methods. ,[object Object]
the best methods to move boat from one side of pool to the other.,[object Object]
 Hands-On Activity #2 Students will create a paper clip alcohol boat and float it in a pool.  Students will also test the best methods to move boat from one side of pool to the other.
Hands-On Activity #3 	Students will make a 	life-saver/gum car.
Further Details about Sorting Vehicles Vehicles can be sorted into groups by their purpose.  In the following slides we will see several vehicles in each of the 3 main categories.

    Air Vehicles and their Purposes A hot air balloon is a type of aircraftthat remains aloft due to its buoyancy.  It  travels by moving with the wind.  A helicopter is an aircraft without wings that obtains its lift from the rotation of overhead blades  An airplane is a winged vehicle capable of flight A jet is a large airplane that is moved by jet propulsion  A space shuttle is a large aircraft designed to transport astronauts between Earth and an orbiting space station

Water Vehicles and their Purposes A canoe is a small, light boat propelled by paddles. A sailboat is a boat that goes across water without an engine.  It moves as the wind pushes the sails.  A medium-sized boat that is powered by a motor a large boat that can be used in war time or peace time to allow  people to cruise to far places
Water Vehicles and their Purposes (cont.) A tugboat is a small boat that pulls a larger boat from one place to another in the water. A submarine is an underwater boat that takes people from  one place to another and can’t be seen from above the water.

Land Vehicles and their Purposes A horse is an animal used as a vehicle that people used to get from one place to another when it was to far to walk. It can also be used to pull a wagon. A bicycle is used to get from one place to another.  It will get you where you are going faster than walking.  Cars or automobiles are used to move people greater  distances then they want to walk or ride their bike. A jeep is like a car but can go up and over hills and  sand dunes, unlike regular cars.
Land Vehicles and their Purposes (cont.) A dump truck is a truck that is used by construction workers  to move building materials to job sites.  A bus is used to move larger numbers of people than a regular car. Trains move people and things over great  distances and greater speeds.   A train runs on a track.

Activity - Class book -Transportation Vehicles Students can go to the computers as part of the rotation as they finish crafting their vehicles, or go to the computer lab as a group and look up and write about one of the following vehicles including the name of the vehicle, where it travels, and their purposes.  The student will include a self-drawn picture. Questions to Answer:Handout worksheet(s) with questions and have students answer questions during each of the movies: Sample questions:    What was the earliest form of transportation?  When was the wheel invented? How did people get around before the wheel was invented? When and by whom was the car invented?  When and by whom was the airplane invented? When and by whom was the boat invented?  When and by whom was the train invented?
Transportation Time LineAfter reviewing the movies and going over the questions from the worksheet about the movies, students will create a timeline showing at least 6 main events in the history of transportation.
Day 7 -12+ Station 1 – Construction-Transportation Game Board Students will create cards and a game board- game must include factual information about transportation. (Worksheet – pg. 39 Transportation – Instructional Fair, Inc.) Station 2 – Writing  Acrostic Poems- Studentswill create acrostic poems using the name of one of the modes of transportation. Shapely Poems -Students will create Vehicle Shaped Poems describing the vehicle of choice Worksheet – pg. 17 (Transportation – Instructional Fair, Inc.)
Station 3 - Math -Types of Transportation Tally Chart and Bar Graphs Students will look through an entire magazine and count and tally the vehicles in each of the 3 categories and then create a bar graph. Worksheet – pg. 35 (Transportation – Instructional Fair, Inc.) Station 4 – Smartboard Activity  Students will use SmartBoard and sort pictures of modes of transportation under the correct category - Land, Air, or Water

  • 28. Land Vehicles and their Purposes A horse is an animal used as a vehicle that people used to get from one place to another when it was to far to walk. It can also be used to pull a wagon. A bicycle is used to get from one place to another. It will get you where you are going faster than walking. Cars or automobiles are used to move people greater distances then they want to walk or ride their bike. A jeep is like a car but can go up and over hills and sand dunes, unlike regular cars.

  • 41. Station 5 – Critical Thinking Students will work on a problem solving dilema where they will have to invent a transportation vehicle to solve the problem. Station 6 – Powerpoint/Presentation- Students will incorporate projects and products from other stations to include in final project. Students will go to various transportation websites and read passages to work on final presentation. Students may use digital cameras and Flip camera to take pictures to include in their presentations.
