Project Title: Watershed PowerPoint Project
Project Subject: Watershed studies final assessment
Grade Level(s): 7th grade

Essential Question: Why is it important to live within a healthy watershed?

Scaffolding What is a watershed?
Questions: What makes a watershed a healthy one?
Why are they important to us?
What can a person do to help protect and care for our
                              watersheds?
                              What lives in the watersheds?

Assignment Students will be assessed on what they’ve learned about
Summary: watersheds by creating a PowerPoint presentation. The
assignment will answer the questions given and will include 5
photos students take on their watershed fieldtrip, 5 photos
found on the internet, as well as at least 1 video clip, and 1
sound. They will also include information answering the
questions on their topic and any other information to make
                              their presentation interesting.

Approximate Length of Unit (days, weeks)
3: weeks (two block classes per week and one short Wednesday period per week)

Goals:
Students will learn about watersheds and how to become good stewards of them. During
the technology-infused part of the lesson, they will become familiar with PowerPoint
presentations, how to upload images, and how to embed video and sounds to enhance
their presentations.

Objectives:
Students will become aware of what watersheds are, why they are important, and what
they can do to help take care of them where they live. They will then learn how to do a
PowerPoint presentation with embedded video, sounds, and photos.

Lesson Plan Sequence of Events – give day-to-day details:
After students have learned what watersheds are and why and how to protect them, the
technology portion of the lesson will begin. This will prepare them to create their final
assessment: a PowerPoint presentation including images, photos they've taken (if
possible), video clips, and sounds. These days below are for the tech-infused portion of

this unit.
Day 1: Take students to the computer lab to introduce how to create PowerPoint
presentations. Students will work with one other person. We will create the title page for
their presentations, and show them how to add slides and choose themes for their slides.

Day 2: Students will search the web for images to upload to their PowerPoint
presentations. They will bring in flash drives that contain photos they’ve taken during the
fieldtrip as well, and can share them with other students who were not able to take
photos. They will save their projects to Dropbox.

Day 3: Students will go on watershed fieldtrip and take photos with their camera phones
or regular digital cameras (if available). They will journal about what photo was taken
where and any notes about each photo they need. They will also need to record any
information they learned about the picture they took. They will record this information in
the Watershed Field Journals. For homework they will download all photos onto their
computers and create a folder on Dropbox for their photos, or put the photos onto a flash
drive that they can then bring in and share with other students as well.

Day 4: Students will again go to the computer lab where they will add their photos to
their PowerPoint presentations. On this day, they will also be shown how to embed video
clips and sounds onto their presentations.

Days 5-7: Students will continue to work on their presentations.

Day 8-10: Partners will share their presentations in the classroom.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student: Depending on the student, I would require fewer photos, and no
video clip or sound added, and have students come in to receive
additional instruction on how to do the PowerPoint.

Gifted Student: Require additional photos, actual slides, and video clips and
sounds to be added for a grade of “Advanced” on their project.
This kind of assignment lends itself to differentiation naturally.
