As a group we set up a questionnaire consisting of 14 questions about the
Beatbullying organisation, and also about the issue of bullying. We asked 40
students aged 16-18 to complete the questionnaire. From our results we were
able to see whether people had heard of the ‘beatbullying’ organisation, and
also whether that had used any of their services. Also we were able to find out
what they would define bullying as, and what they believe are the reasons that
people get bullied.
How old are you?
16
17
18
19

We asked teenagers
between the ages of
16-19 to complete our
questionnaires as this
is the age group we
are targeting our antibullying campaign at.
Although the majority
of the people filling out
our questionnaires
were 16-17, and this
therefore confirmed
that our target
audience is
teenagers.
Gender
Male

Females

We tried to ask a range of both
male and female as we are
targeting our anti-bullying
campaign at both
genders, although mostly males
had completed the questions.
We wanted to get the
perspective from both males and
females, and see if there is a
difference between what they
would class bullying as, and what
they both believe the reasons are
for people getting bullied.
What town do you live in?
Dunstable

Houghton
Regis
Luton
Other

The people we asked
to fill out our
questionnaire all live
in Bedfordshire. This
is because this is our
local area, and
therefore we will be
aiming our antibullying campaign at
the local
community, as well as
nationally if we share
it on the internet.
-‘Constant abuse whether physically, verbally or mentally
(through the internet)’.
-‘Constant physical/mental abuse’.
-‘Constantly picking on a specific person’.
-‘Behaviour which directly effects someone negatively.’
-‘Hurting people physically or mentally over a long time’.
-‘Constantly picking on others for no reason.’

The people that we asked had many different ideas of what they would define
bullying as. Most people said that it was constantly picking on somebody both
mentally and physically. From the information that we have gathered we have
concluded that there are many different definitions of what people perceive
bullying to be, and therefore in our advertising campaign we need to make it
clear on what bullying actually is.
‘I was bullied for four years through the internet and verbally in
middle school’.
‘People were racist.’
‘They were picked on because of their size.’
‘I got called names due to my race’.
‘A friend was criticised for her appearance and weight so much
that she wanted to kill herself.’
If yes, would you be willing to tell us what happened?
-’A friend was criticised for her appearance and weight so much
that she wanted to kill herself.’
-’They were picked on because of their size’.
-’People being racist’.
-’I was bullied for four years through the internet and verbally
during middle school’.
After gathering information on whether people have been bullied, or if they know
of anyone who has been bullied we had a range of personal experiences related
to bullying. From this we know that quite a few teenagers have been bullied in the
past, and therefore we are targeting our anti-bullying campaign to the right age
group. Also we now have person stories which we can include in our anti-bullying
campaign to ensure that we get the publics attention when showing our campaign.
-‘Home’
-‘Friends’
-‘Family’
-‘Teachers’
-‘School’
We asked the people filling out the questionnaire if they knew of anywhere to
go if they were being bullied, or where they think they would go if they were
being bullied or have been bullied.
The majority of the people that we asked said that they would talk to family
and friends, and inside of school they would go and see the teachers at
school. Therefore in our anti-bullying advertising campaign we would include
websites of where they could visit if they were being bullied, and people that
they can talk to, such as the ‘Beatbullying’ website.
What are some of the reasons you
think people get bullied?
Sexual
orientation
Appearance
Race
Religion
All of the
above

Most people believed that
people get bullied for many
reasons such as their ‘sexual
orientation’, ‘Appearance’, ‘R
ace’ and ‘Religion’. When
asking which one of these
they believe that people get
bullied for over three
quarters of people we asked
said that they believed that it
was all of them.
Therefore in our advertising
campaign we can include
scenes to show a person
being bullied because of all
of these things, and
hopefully bring it to the
publics attention.
What is your media preference?
TV
Internet
Magazines
Newspaper

When asking what is their media
preferences everybody said that
it was either television or the
internet. After finding out this
information we know that we
should show our advertising
campaign on the internet, such
as social networking sites such
as Youtube, and also advertising
the campaign on television if
possible.
Have you seen any antibullying adverts?
Yes
No

When asking people if they
have seen any anti-bullying
adverts the majority of people
that we have asked said that
they had seen advertisements.
Although, over a quarter of
people said that they hadn’t
seen any anti-bullying
advertising campaigns.
Therefore when creating our
anti-bullying advertising
campaign we want everybody to
be able to view it, and to do this
we would have to publicise it on
social networking sites such as
Facebook, and on Youtube.
‘Emotional Message’
‘Very effective’
‘More serious than I thought and happens to lots of people’
‘They stand out when you see how the person has been
effected.’
‘Person stories’.
‘Strong and graphic.’

When asking if anything stood out whilst watching anti-bullying
advertising campaign most people said that personal stories, and
showing an emotional message makes the advertisement stand out.
Therefore as these techniques have seemed to work, and make the
audience remember the advert we would consider using some of
these techniques in our anti-bullying campaign.
‘Show clips of different aspects of bullying’.
‘Helplines, advice, support group.’
‘All the ways that someone getting bullied could find help’.
‘Real life victims instead of actors all the time’.
‘A definition of bullying so that people can realise what it is’.
‘A reconstruction of someone being bullied’.
‘Shock value (more convincing)’.
‘What it can lead people to do’.
‘Personal stories’.
We asked the people filling out the questionnaires what they would like to
see included in an anti-bullying advert. Most people who responded had
said that they would like to see ‘real life’ and ‘personal’ stories, and also to
define what bullying actually is. Therefore when it comes to planning and
figuring out what we are going to include in our advertising campaign we
would have to take these things into consideration, and include real life
stories which we have already found out in this questionnaire.
Have you ever heard of the
beatbullying organisation?
Yes
No

Out of everybody we
asked nobody who
had said yes had
used the
‘Beatbullying’
website.

When asking people whether they had heard of the organisation, or
used their website the majority of people had said no. As this is the
organisation that we are going to be basing our advertising campaign
around we want to bring them to the publics attention. Therefore to do
this we would be including information on the organisation in our
campaign and then sharing our campaign on a range of media
preferences such as social networking sites.
From this piece of primary research that we have carried out we are now able to see
what our target audience think about the issue of bullying, and also whether they have
heard of the organisation.
After looking through the results and putting them into graphs we were able to see that
many different people had opinions on what they would define bullying as, and also they
believe that bullying occurs for a range of reasons. We also found out that not many
people have heard of the Beatbullying.org organisation and also the people that had
haven’t used their website. This shows us that when creating our anti-bullying
advertising campaign that we should define bullying, and show a range of
‘reconstructions’ of the reasons that people get bullied.
As not many people have heard of the ‘Beatbullying’ organisation we would also have to
ensure that we include a lot of information on the organisation as this is what our
campaign will be based around. We would also include the website, and what people
can use it for.
When doing this we would share our campaign on the internet as this is the media
preference that most teenagers use, and share it on social networking sites and on
Youtube.
Also most people said that they would like to see ‘real life stories’ and ‘personal
experiences’ included in an anti-bullying advertising campaign, and therefore we would
have to take this into consideration and include the person stories we have already
gathered in this questionnaire.

Teen Perspectives on Bullying

  • 2. As a group we set up a questionnaire consisting of 14 questions about the Beatbullying organisation, and also about the issue of bullying. We asked 40 students aged 16-18 to complete the questionnaire. From our results we were able to see whether people had heard of the ‘beatbullying’ organisation, and also whether that had used any of their services. Also we were able to find out what they would define bullying as, and what they believe are the reasons that people get bullied.
  • 3. How old are you? 16 17 18 19 We asked teenagers between the ages of 16-19 to complete our questionnaires as this is the age group we are targeting our antibullying campaign at. Although the majority of the people filling out our questionnaires were 16-17, and this therefore confirmed that our target audience is teenagers.
  • 4. Gender Male Females We tried to ask a range of both male and female as we are targeting our anti-bullying campaign at both genders, although mostly males had completed the questions. We wanted to get the perspective from both males and females, and see if there is a difference between what they would class bullying as, and what they both believe the reasons are for people getting bullied.
  • 5. What town do you live in? Dunstable Houghton Regis Luton Other The people we asked to fill out our questionnaire all live in Bedfordshire. This is because this is our local area, and therefore we will be aiming our antibullying campaign at the local community, as well as nationally if we share it on the internet.
  • 6. -‘Constant abuse whether physically, verbally or mentally (through the internet)’. -‘Constant physical/mental abuse’. -‘Constantly picking on a specific person’. -‘Behaviour which directly effects someone negatively.’ -‘Hurting people physically or mentally over a long time’. -‘Constantly picking on others for no reason.’ The people that we asked had many different ideas of what they would define bullying as. Most people said that it was constantly picking on somebody both mentally and physically. From the information that we have gathered we have concluded that there are many different definitions of what people perceive bullying to be, and therefore in our advertising campaign we need to make it clear on what bullying actually is.
  • 7. ‘I was bullied for four years through the internet and verbally in middle school’. ‘People were racist.’ ‘They were picked on because of their size.’ ‘I got called names due to my race’. ‘A friend was criticised for her appearance and weight so much that she wanted to kill herself.’ If yes, would you be willing to tell us what happened? -’A friend was criticised for her appearance and weight so much that she wanted to kill herself.’ -’They were picked on because of their size’. -’People being racist’. -’I was bullied for four years through the internet and verbally during middle school’. After gathering information on whether people have been bullied, or if they know of anyone who has been bullied we had a range of personal experiences related to bullying. From this we know that quite a few teenagers have been bullied in the past, and therefore we are targeting our anti-bullying campaign to the right age group. Also we now have person stories which we can include in our anti-bullying campaign to ensure that we get the publics attention when showing our campaign.
  • 8. -‘Home’ -‘Friends’ -‘Family’ -‘Teachers’ -‘School’ We asked the people filling out the questionnaire if they knew of anywhere to go if they were being bullied, or where they think they would go if they were being bullied or have been bullied. The majority of the people that we asked said that they would talk to family and friends, and inside of school they would go and see the teachers at school. Therefore in our anti-bullying advertising campaign we would include websites of where they could visit if they were being bullied, and people that they can talk to, such as the ‘Beatbullying’ website.
  • 9. What are some of the reasons you think people get bullied? Sexual orientation Appearance Race Religion All of the above Most people believed that people get bullied for many reasons such as their ‘sexual orientation’, ‘Appearance’, ‘R ace’ and ‘Religion’. When asking which one of these they believe that people get bullied for over three quarters of people we asked said that they believed that it was all of them. Therefore in our advertising campaign we can include scenes to show a person being bullied because of all of these things, and hopefully bring it to the publics attention.
  • 10. What is your media preference? TV Internet Magazines Newspaper When asking what is their media preferences everybody said that it was either television or the internet. After finding out this information we know that we should show our advertising campaign on the internet, such as social networking sites such as Youtube, and also advertising the campaign on television if possible.
  • 11. Have you seen any antibullying adverts? Yes No When asking people if they have seen any anti-bullying adverts the majority of people that we have asked said that they had seen advertisements. Although, over a quarter of people said that they hadn’t seen any anti-bullying advertising campaigns. Therefore when creating our anti-bullying advertising campaign we want everybody to be able to view it, and to do this we would have to publicise it on social networking sites such as Facebook, and on Youtube.
  • 12. ‘Emotional Message’ ‘Very effective’ ‘More serious than I thought and happens to lots of people’ ‘They stand out when you see how the person has been effected.’ ‘Person stories’. ‘Strong and graphic.’ When asking if anything stood out whilst watching anti-bullying advertising campaign most people said that personal stories, and showing an emotional message makes the advertisement stand out. Therefore as these techniques have seemed to work, and make the audience remember the advert we would consider using some of these techniques in our anti-bullying campaign.
  • 13. ‘Show clips of different aspects of bullying’. ‘Helplines, advice, support group.’ ‘All the ways that someone getting bullied could find help’. ‘Real life victims instead of actors all the time’. ‘A definition of bullying so that people can realise what it is’. ‘A reconstruction of someone being bullied’. ‘Shock value (more convincing)’. ‘What it can lead people to do’. ‘Personal stories’. We asked the people filling out the questionnaires what they would like to see included in an anti-bullying advert. Most people who responded had said that they would like to see ‘real life’ and ‘personal’ stories, and also to define what bullying actually is. Therefore when it comes to planning and figuring out what we are going to include in our advertising campaign we would have to take these things into consideration, and include real life stories which we have already found out in this questionnaire.
  • 14. Have you ever heard of the beatbullying organisation? Yes No Out of everybody we asked nobody who had said yes had used the ‘Beatbullying’ website. When asking people whether they had heard of the organisation, or used their website the majority of people had said no. As this is the organisation that we are going to be basing our advertising campaign around we want to bring them to the publics attention. Therefore to do this we would be including information on the organisation in our campaign and then sharing our campaign on a range of media preferences such as social networking sites.
  • 15. From this piece of primary research that we have carried out we are now able to see what our target audience think about the issue of bullying, and also whether they have heard of the organisation. After looking through the results and putting them into graphs we were able to see that many different people had opinions on what they would define bullying as, and also they believe that bullying occurs for a range of reasons. We also found out that not many people have heard of the Beatbullying.org organisation and also the people that had haven’t used their website. This shows us that when creating our anti-bullying advertising campaign that we should define bullying, and show a range of ‘reconstructions’ of the reasons that people get bullied. As not many people have heard of the ‘Beatbullying’ organisation we would also have to ensure that we include a lot of information on the organisation as this is what our campaign will be based around. We would also include the website, and what people can use it for. When doing this we would share our campaign on the internet as this is the media preference that most teenagers use, and share it on social networking sites and on Youtube. Also most people said that they would like to see ‘real life stories’ and ‘personal experiences’ included in an anti-bullying advertising campaign, and therefore we would have to take this into consideration and include the person stories we have already gathered in this questionnaire.
