- Profile - A personal Facebook account to connect with friends and family
- Page - A separate account created for a business or product
- Fans - Users who have clicked the Like button to follow a business Page
- Cover Image - The large image above the Timeline on Profiles and Pages
- Like Button - Allows users to become Fans of a Page by clicking the button
- News Feed - Where users see posts from friends and liked Pages
- Status - The box to post updates visible on a Profile or Page Timeline
- Tagging - When friends tag a user in photos on their Timeline or News Feed
2. New Series - Definitions
This show is the first in a series of shows called Social
Media Basics – Definitions.
Each week I will clarify the meanings of terms used on
the different social media sites.
There will also be a blog post each week to go along
with the slide show.
Next week – WordPress

3. Basic Facebook Terms
For those of you who would like clarification of some
of the regular terms that you see on Facebook and in
other blog posts, articles and books – here are 17 of
the most common.
Some of these relate to Profiles, some to Pages and
some to both.
You can find more at the Facebook Glossary at
http://www.facebook.com/help/glossary.

4. Activity Log
Part of the Admin Panel of a
Page – you can find this under
the Manage menu. This
allows you to allow or disallow
posts made by Fans. You can
also change the dates or add
locations to posts you have
made. Click the circle to pop
up the menu.
4
5. Admin
The administrator(s) of a Page. This will be you for Pages you create, but
you can also add other Friends as Admins and someone else could add you
as an Admin on their Page. The Admins have full access to all the
information behind the Page. They can update or change anything at any
time. Add new Admins at Manage-Edit Page-Manage Admins.
5
6. Admin Panel
This appears above the
Cover Image when you go
to your Page as the Admin.
It has several menus for
updating and locating
information along with
quick links to Notifications,
Messages, Fans, Insights
and Tips.
6
7. Applications (Tabs/Apps)
Apps on Page
Apps List on Profile
These are the 3rd-party programs that users can add to the Profiles or their
Pages. They run the gamut from all those games people play with their
Profiles to really useful programs that can be used to enhance and expand
your Pages. On a Profile, they are listed on the left side of the News Feed.
On a Page, they are shown with images underneath the Cover Image.
They are also known as Apps (for short) and as Tabs (which comes from
the way they were displayed on the original version of Pages).
7
8. Badges
These are those boxes that you see on other blogs and websites showing the
status updates and other items from the profile or page of the blog writer or
site owner. These can also be known as widgets.
8
9. Cover Image
Cover Image
Profile Photo
This is the large image that appears above the Timeline on both Pages
and Profiles. It must be at least 399 pixels wide and the maximum size
is 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. You upload this image yourself
and it can be something you create or you purchase or you have
someone create for you. NOTE – for Cover Images that go on Pages,
there are some specific rules that apply.
9
10. Fans
These are the users who connect to your business/product Page. These
users have clicked the ‘Like’ button shown on your Page to become Fans.
Fans are NOT connected to your personal Profile in any way. They can
see that you are the Admin, but they can ONLY see the information that
you have made public in the Privacy Settings on your Profile.
10
11. Friend Lists
One way to organize your News Feed. You can create Friend Lists any way
you want and it’s a good way to separate close family and friends from
business friends or acquaintances. You can then post certain status
updates only to specific lists and you can also customize your Privacy
Settings based on the lists. The Friend Lists you create will show on the
left side of your News Feed and you can click on them individually to only
see the posts from Friends on each list.
11
12. Friends
These are the people you
connect with from your
personal Profile. A Facebook
user has to send a ‘friend
request’ to you and ask
permission to be your friend –
then you have to confirm it
before they are allowed
access to your Profile
information.
12
13. Like Button
Like Button – this
one says ‘Liked’
because I have
already clicked
the button.
This button now appears right under the Cover Image on your Page. If
someone wants to be a Fan of your Page (or you want to be a Fan of theirs),
they must click this button. Once someone becomes a Fan, the posts that
you make on your Page will appear on their News Feed.
13
14. News Feed
What most people think of as the
main page of their Facebook Profile.
This is what comes up when you log
in – where you see all the posts from
your Friends and from other Pages
that you have ‘liked’. You can
organize this in a couple of different
ways which can help make it easier
to read through if you have a large
amount of Friends and Pages that
you like. This is probably what you
are used to seeing on your Profile.
14
15. Page
This is what you create separately
for your business or product.
Your Profile is used as the
administrator (or Admin) of the
page and you are able to post as
your page instead of as yourself,
but it is a separate entity and all
the information you add to the
Page is public. When you create a
page using the ‘Create Page’
button, you are setting yourself
up as the Admin.
15
16. Profile
This is your personal Facebook
account that is listed under
your name. This is what you
use to connect with friends and
family, post your personal
status updates and photos, set
your privacy levels and create
Friend Lists. When you create
an account from the Facebook
Home page, you are creating a
personal Profile.
16
17. Profile Photo
Cover Image
Profile Photo
This is the smaller square image that goes along with the Cover
Image on the Timelines. It is also the image that’s used when you
make a post. For your Profile it will usually be a photo of yourself
and for your Page it might be your company logo. The size for this
image is 160 pixels square.
17
18. Status
Profile Status Box
Page Status Box
The box at the top of your News Feed or your Timeline where you can post
an update to your Profile or your Page.
18
19. Social Plug-Ins
These are items such as the
Like Button or Like Box that
you see on other blogs and
websites. They are also
known as widgets and you
can use them on your own
blog and website, although
you may need some
knowledge of web coding.
19
20. Tagging (Photos)
Friends who add photos that you
are in can tag you in the photo.
This appears in their Timelines
and News Feeds (not just yours)
and in the News Feeds of all
their Friends. You can set your
Privacy Settings so that you
receive a notification when this
happens or you can disallow this
completely.
20
21. Timeline
This is the new interface that Facebook has created for Pages and Profiles.
The main idea of the Timeline is to create a history of your business (for your
Page) or of your life (for your Profile). Posts appear in order by date but go
from left to right to left along the vertical timeline in the middle. Posts that
have been highlighted go all the way across the timeline on both sides.
21
22. Wall
Part of your personal Profile. It
shows only the posts that you have
made and that Friends have posted
directly to you – such as birthday
messages. When you click on your
name at the top of the screen, you
see the Wall as your Timeline. To
go to someone else’s Wall to make
a direct post, click their name
anywhere you see it – from your
Friends listing or from a post on
your News Feed.
(This is someone else’s Wall so that’s why I have distorted the names and photos.)
