2. Introduction
Halloween is one of the oldest holidays
still celebrated today.
But…
Do you know the origins of Halloween?
What is your vision about Halloween?
Some people view Halloween as a time
for fun, putting on costumes, trick-or-
treating, and having theme parties.
Others view it as a time of superstitions,
ghosts and evil spirits that should be
avoided at all costs. 2
3. Halloween culture can be traced back
to the Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain
and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the
feast of Samhain, which was annually
on October 31st to honor the dead.
Samhain signifies "summers end" or
November. Samhain was a harvest
festival with huge sacred
bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic
year and beginning of a new one. The
Celts believed the souls of the dead
roamed the streets and villages at
night. Since not all spirits were thought
to be friendly, gifts and treats were left
out to pacify the evil and ensure next
years crops would be plentiful. This
custom evolved into trick-or-treating.3

8. Conclusion
The idea of designing this Web Quest is to
help getting familiar with the English
resources available on the Internet and on
the computer.
At the end of this activity students will have
worked with authentic and challenging
materials. Also, students will have used
higher order thinking skills such as:
comparing, contrasting, processing, analyzin
g and finally creating due to the fact that
our students are expected to use this well-
known source to find all kind of information.
