2. A SHORT REVIEW ON GREEN SCREEN OR
CHROMA KEY
• Chroma-Key is the term that refers to how the software can identify a
particular colour or ‘Chroma’ in one shot and remove it or replace it with
something else. We use a green screen to give the key colour for use in
editing later. (Still Pictures or Video)


3. SO WHAT DO WE NEED?
1. GREEN SCREEN BACK DROP

We need a back drop that is the ‘right’ colour. This can be blue or green. Green is good
as generally peoples clothing and objects we may like to shoot will be unlikely to be this
colour. It’s useful to have a fabric we can hang or roll-up when not in use at home.

4. 2. A FRAME TO CLIP THE GREEN SCREEN

The frame must be big enough to support our fabric. Some home users have made these
frames out of PVC water pipe. But you can purchase a frame as part of a kit quite
cheaply now a days.

5. 3. GOOD STRONG CLAMPS TO HOLD OUR
FABRIC

A good set of bulldog clamps to hold the fabric in place.

6. 4. STUDIO QUALITY DIFFUSED LIGHTS

One of the most important aspects is getting nice even lighting. Direct lighting is not good
for studio style lighting and won’t give a good result. Lights need to be diffused. Once
again the price here has come down a lot!

7. 5. A CAMERA / VIDEO RECORDER
•
This is probably one of the things that has made this all possible for the home user. The
quality and resolution of hand held digital cameras is amazing! You can have a darn good
setup using just your iPhone and a small clip on tripod. Many other phones now have
awesome cameras. In a further slide share I will go through how to setup a workflow.

8. THAT PRETTY MUCH SUMS IT UP!

You can be setup and be running with your own phone as camera for under 200USD
these day! Yep, a full green screen studio in a spare room for a really low price! A
fraction of what it used to cost.
