- We are starting with Africa because it is often called the birthplace of the human race. Fossils over 2 million years old have been found here, and the changes throughout out the centuries to this continent have been astounding. In this unit, we will examine the impact of 6 key themes that have shaped Africa’s history, and influenced it’s global standing today. The main themes are geography, history and government, social patterns, culture/belief systems, economics, and contemporary issues. The first theme we will examine is geography, and this PowerPoint will introduce us to the wide spectrum of Africa’s geography.
- We will be doing a lot of free writes this year. Reason for this is writing your ideas greatly helps with comprehension, as well as assists with presenting your thoughts in a clear manner. I will assess the free writes by coming around to check on your focus, asking for participation, or periodically collecting your responses.
- Africa has a very diverse ecosystem that is influenced by it’s geography.
- Rainforests are located in West Africa, and the Congo River basin.

- Millions of years ago, the Sahara was once all grasslands. Now, the majority of Northern Africa is desert.
- The majority of Southern Africa is grasslands.
- Africa is composed of 53 countries, and many ethnic groups and cultures. Throughout this unit, we will examine the development of this continent.
