Mrs. Pierce is a teacher at Brown Barge Middle School. The school uses an unconventional curriculum model with trimesters called "streams" focused on different subject areas. Students from all grades learn together in these streams. In the final trimester, called IMPACT, students explore their personal and civic responsibility to make a positive impact. Mrs. Pierce's IMPACT class is working on service learning projects like fundraising, presentations on health issues, and organizing activities for hospitals.

5. Students study and learn with students from other grade levels.

6. Trimesters are called “streams,” homeroom is called TOR- short for teacher of record, and grades are given on a 1-5 scale.

8. Impact At the end of their eighth grade year, students spend a trimester in a stream called IMPACT, which is what I am teaching now. The stream premise is that “we all have a personal and civic responsibility to make an impact on the world in which we live.”

9. Private Victory Students created a collage to demonstrate their personal mission statement as an IMPACT assignment.

10. Service learning project My class is the physical and mental health simulation group. Students are: working on songs to sing at a children’s hospital, collecting money to add a suicide hot line, presenting a drug and alcohol awareness seminar at lunch, and a “Nutrition Rocks” field day during physical education one day.
