4. Ca' Bolani Frizzante (x1)
Soft, fruity, double-gold Prosecco from Italy's Zonin family - revered
Prosecco masters!
Prosecco is as Italian as gelato, enjoyed in some circles on a daily
basis! The best are the delicious, handcrafted versions from artisan
producers like the Zonin family, winemakers since 1821. Ca' Bolani is
one of the most stylish Proseccos you'll ever taste. It's made entirely
from their premium estate-grown grapes in Friuli, Italy's top white
wine region. To guarantee quality, they keep every aspect of
production 'in house' - an approach that pays off with top awards. This
wine won Gran Menzione at Vinitaly and a Gold medal from the
Mundus Vini competition. Winemaker Marco Rabino favours the
frizzante style - less fizzy than Champagne, it's light, zippy and very
refreshing; full to the brim of mouthwatering pear and citrus flavours.
5. Split Rock Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (x1)
Top-selling, old-vine Sauvignon Blanc from a pioneering family estate in
Nelson. Invigorating stuff.
Named after the landmark Split Apple Rock in Able Tasman National Park,
this wine is from Hermann Seifried, who built his winery on the South Island
in 1973 with the help of his local church. He'd only arrived in New Zealand
three years earlier from Austria, via Germany (where he studied
winemaking) and South Africa. He met and married Kiwi lass Agnes Wilkins,
and two years later they realised their shared dream of growing grapes.
1976 was their maiden vintage and, 35 years on, the Seifrieds are still going
strong and racking up a host of awards. Gooseberry-fresh Split Rock slips
down a treat on its own and partners dishes such as prawns with a spicy
salsa, a nectarine and haloumi salad, grilled chicken, poached salmon or
creamy pasta.
6. Barón de Barbón Oak-Aged 2010 (x1)
Outstanding value, eminently quaffable Rioja from the exceptionally talented
Murúa family
The talent behind this contemporary, fruit-driven Rioja is the young and
infectiously keen Javier Murúa. His father Julián owns Bodegas Muriel (a
winery his own parents originally established in 1926) in Rioja's superior
Alavesa district. We have a fabulous working relationship with the family
ensuring we get first refusal on their finest vats. A previous vintage of Barón
de Barbón has been called "arguably the greatest Rioja for the price on sale
in the UK" (Scotland on Sunday) - no doubt why our customers order it
more often than any other. With its red berry flavours and fragrant vanilla
character, this supple Rioja is most enjoyable on its own or with simple
suppers such as lamb chops, meaty pasta dishes or chicken casserole.
7. The Patriots Merlot 2011 (x1)
8,000 miles travelled, 1,000 wines tasted - all for one gloriously smooth
Merlot.
As Joanna Simon noted in The Sunday Times, "Cabernet and Merlot are
grown almost everywhere, but few countries achieve such textbook flavours
at such keen prices as Chile." Our Buyer Becca returned from her last
mission eager to share her latest discovery with us - a lush, pure Merlot that
combines Bordeaux style elegance with a smooth juiciness that's uniquely
Chilean. The Patriots is from the Santa Rita estate (highly regarded by fine
wine critic Robert Parker), which helped shape Chile's history when its cellar
proved a useful hiding place for Chilean patriots fighting for independence
from Spain in 1814. With its silken berry flavours and gentle oak notes, it's
lovely as a glass on its own or with simple midweek suppers.
8. Campanula Pinot Grigio 2011 (x2)
Taste how the beguiling Pinot Grigio grape performs so spectacularly in
Hungary's historic vineyards
Famous for its regal sweet wine, Tokaji, Hungary has many strings to its
bow, including a long history with Italian grapes. This splendid Pinot Grigio
comes from an award-winning cellar established in 1949 in the village of
Etyek, 50 kilometres from Budapest, and it shows just what fantastic quality
and value Hungary offers. Gábor Laczkó is one of the best winemakers in
the country and has certainly proven himself expert at a variety of thrilling
wines - and not least extracting the refreshing crisp, minerally character of
the Pinot Grigio grape. With classic ripe pear, apricot and refreshing green
apple character, Campanula offers unrivalled value for money. Enjoy as an
apéritif or with lighter dishes like prawns or grilled plaice.
9. The Black Stump Durif Shiraz 2011 (x2)
10th-anniversary edition of your No.1 bestselling wine - celebrate a decade
of success
According to winemaker Alan Kennett (and thousands of Black Stump
customers), when you combine Durif and spicy Shiraz "magical things
happen". Perhaps this explains Black Stump's decade of popularity. The
wine owes its name to a mythical outback landmark, now part of the Aussie
language. An expression of the biggest/ richest anything "this side of the
black stump" effectively means "in the known world". How appropriate for a
wine of peerless intensity and popularity. Dark Durif - "the grape that takes
no prisoners" (The Observer) - and impressively juicy, spicy Shiraz have a
turbo-charging effect on each other, creating a velvety and irresistible style.
Serve in large glasses with char-grilled steak or Sunday roast.
10. Pillastro Primitivo 2010 (x2)
One sip and you'll be hooked on the fantastic, silky soft fruit of Italy's most
beguiling red
Puglia, in Italy's deep south, is best known for big, smoky, exuberant wines
made from its prized local varieties - Primitivo and Negroamaro in particular.
This example is from Angelo Maci, a leading figure in the quality revolution
that has occurred over the last two decades. Angelo made this wine purely
from Primitivo - more commonly known as Zinfandel in the States. In
southern Italy it produces fantastically rich, powerful reds with plenty of ripe
fruit. A period of oak ageing has infused the wine's generous fruit flavours
with notes of spice and vanilla. This weighty red has aromas of ripe
raspberry and spiced plum with notes of cedar wood. Enjoy with game
stews, cassoulet, pasta with a rich tomato sauce or a hearty lasagne.
11. Visionario 2011 (x2)
Refreshing, luxurious favourite from the Veneto hills, home to Italy's finest
whites
The cool Alpine climate of the Veneto in northern Italy is perfect for creating
crisp, aromatic whites. Many are made from Pinot Grigio, but this 'visionary'
white is an inspired blend from Alessandro Gallici. Born and raised in Friuli,
he knows the vineyards like the backs of his hands. For many years he was
head winemaker at a top cellar in the heart of the region, but last year he
decided to branch out on his own - and we were only too delighted to follow
him. By combining the local Friulano grape with a number of international
varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer, Alessandro has
created a wonderfully aromatic wine. A refreshing apéritif, Visionario is great
with food, too - trout with almonds, chicken or creamy pasta.
