English at home

2. Our objective
To spend a nice time with our child through English,
creating an affective bond with him/her.
3. Did you know that...?
• Parents are the most important teachers
• Children understand first and then speak.
• Sensitive period for language learning
• Have patience and keep going.
• Respect their rhythm.
• Focus on the success.
• Don’t test them constantly.
• There are different learning
styles.
• Get relevant materials.
4. Before you start…
• It will be useful to arrange a set time each evening.
• To prepare your child you may want to use fun ways to
start the language session.
• The best activities are the multi-sensory ones.
• Their attention span is short in early ages, so the activities
you use should be fun but brief.
• The information you use should be clear and concise.
• The vocabulary you include should be familiar to the
child.
• Recognising his/her achievements continuously is very
important.
5. Some ideas to help them learn
English at home:
• Read with your child and around your child. Use books
with clear images that allow your child to understand the
information.
• Use games that you already
have at home and play with
them following the instructions
in English.
• Play action games.
6. Some ideas to help them learn
English at home:
• Children can pretend to be the “English teacher” and
teach parents what they have learned in English.
• Do arts and crafts in English
• Describe family albums.
• A magic box or bag
• Play with puppets.
7. Some ideas to help them learn
English at home:
• Listen to nursery rhymes and children’s songs,
especially during key times of the day.
• Play a computer game in English
• Visit websites in English.
• Video: Between the ages of three and five, a child’s
attention span tends to be limited.
