Mountains that are grouped together are called mountain ranges. A long line of connected mountain ranges is referred to as a mountains chain. Hills are shorter landforms with a lower altitude than mountains. Valleys are low areas located between mountains, often containing rivers. A plateau is a high plain, while depressions are lower plains surrounded by higher land. Coastal plains are flat regions near the shoreline. Together, all these features comprise the landscape of an area.
