8. What is Permaculture?

“Though the problems of the world are
increasingly complex, the solutions remain
embarrassingly simple.”

9.
Permaculture is the harmonious
integration through systems management
of all life kingdoms into agriculturally
productive ecosystems and socially just
environments, producing sound economic
consequences. It’s a design intention
reflecting patterns in Nature that seeks to
build interconnections allowing for
energy efficiency and abundance of yield.

While the financial crisis grabbed the headlines, the
underlying challenge of ensuring food security for a
growing world population remained central to the agenda
of governments worldwide. The magnitude of this
challenge was reinforced by the UN's Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) which announced in June that the
combination of global economic slowdown and high food
prices had pushed another 100 million people into a state
of chronic hunger and poverty. The total number of people
on the planet who are malnourished has now surpassed
the one billion mark.
26. ...the greatest change we need
to make is from consumption
to production, even if on a
small scale, in our own
gardens. If only 10% of us do
this, there is enough for
everyone. " - Bill Mollison
