3. Achurra’s Lab configuration cont. In addition to what you viewed on the video shown on the previous slide, Virtual PC can be used to run virtually (no pun intended  ) any Microsoft OS. This document is intended to show you how and as a requirement for preparing your Virtual Environment to use with your Lab Assignments.

Let’s Get Started To begin create a folder in your my document folder called My Virtual Machines and another folder called Downloads, these will be used for the rest of the installation (please note that the directory structure here and in future slides can be designed per your preference and this document contains only suggestions.)

5. Let’s Get Started Next open the My Virtual Machines Folder and create a folder called Microsoft Virtual PC Machines and if you have Sun Virtual Box Create another folder Called Sun Virtual Machines

6. Let’s Get Started Open either the Microsoft Virtual PC Machines or the Sun Virtual Box Machines folder and create separate folders for each virtual machine you wish to create

7. Let’s Get Started Now that we have completed creating the folders needed to download and install our software, let’s go surfing and download the software. To do this we will visit a couple of sites….

9. Files and Websites Needed (32 or 64 bit depends on your Hardware)

10. Public.me.com/jachurra After navigating to Instructor Achurra’s site you will see this screen

11. Public.me.com/jachurra To begin select the ISO Folder on the left side of the screen

12. Public.me.com/jachurra Click on the en_srv_2003_r2_standard_cd1file and click on download button making sure to save the file in the my documents download folder we created earlier

13. Public.me.com/jachurra Repeat this process selecting the en_win_srv_2003_r2_standard_cd 2 file and click the download button again make sure to save the file in the my documents download folder we created earlier

14. Public.me.com/jachurra Next we need to download the Virtual PC installation files. To do this click on MS Virtual PC Support Files on the left side of the screen.

15. Public.me.com/jachurra Next choose either the Virtual PC 32 Setup or the Virtual PC 64 Setup file depending on whether your computer supports 32 bit or 64 bit software. After choosing the file click on the download button, making sure to save the file in the my documents/downloads folder created earlier

Dream Spark Virtual PC as well as Server 2003 can also be downloaded from http://www.Dreamspark.com Dream Spark is simple; it's all about giving students Microsoft professional-level developer and designer tools at no charge so you can chase your dreams and create the next big breakthrough in technology - or just get a head start on your career. As a student all you need to do is to create an account and validate yourself as a student

17. Dream Spark Account Setup To create an account click on the sign in button in the upper right corner of the screen

18. Dream Spark Account Setup Next, and unless you already have a Microsoft Live.com ID, click on the sign up link on the lower left side of the screen

19. Dream Spark Account Setup If you have an email account choose the first option. If you do not have an email account choose the second option

20. Dream Spark Account Setup Follow the instructions on screen to complete the registration process

21. Dream Spark Account Setup Once again fill out the information requested on screen. Remember the stronger the password the better the safeguard against someone cracking it. Click Continue

22. Dream Spark Account Setup Complete the information requested and click next to continue

23. Dream Spark Account Setup Review and sign the agreement by clicking on I accept

25. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC Now that we have created folders, created our Dream Spark Account, downloaded our software from either Dream Spark or public.me.com/jachurra it is time to install Microsoft Virtual PC and create virtual hard drives

26. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC First navigate to your my documents/downloads folder created earlier and choose either Virtual PC 32 Setup or Virtual PC 64 Setup depending on which version your PC supports

27. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC To install the program onto your machine just follow the onscreen instructions

28. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC Accept the License Agreement click on next to continue

29. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC Complete the form filling out the information requested and then click on next to continue

30. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC Continue following the onscreen instructions and accepting the default settings before clicking on the install button

31. Installing Microsoft Virtual PC Congratulations, now that the installation of Microsoft Virtual PC is complete, lets create a Virtual Machine and Hard Drive

33. Creating A Virtual Machine Now that we have successfully installed Microsoft Virtual PC we need to create a virtual machine and install an operating system on it. To get started creating Virtual Machines and hard Drives first run the program Microsoft Virtual PC by clicking start menu; all programs Microsoft Virtual PC

34. Creating A Virtual Machine After starting the program the following screen should appear, this is called the Virtual PC console and yours should be empty at this point because we have not created a virtual machine

35. Creating A Virtual Machine To begin the process of creating a Virtual Machine and its associated Hard Drive (VHD) called 2003 server, first click on the New button in the upper right hand corner

36. Creating A Virtual Machine You should now see the following screen click next to continue

37. Creating A Virtual Machine Choose the create a virtual machine and then click next to continue

38. Creating A Virtual Machine We will now create a Virtual Machine called Server 2003. Type in the name and location in which you wish to create this machine. In this case we want to place these files in the my documents/my virtual machines/ Microsoft PC virtual machines/Server 2003 folder we created earlier

39. Creating A Virtual Machine To do this click on the browse button and navigate to the my documents/my virtual machines/Microsoft Virtual PC Machines/Server 2003 folder on your hard drive, type in the name of the file you wish to create and click on save

40. Achurra’s Lab Configuration Cont Please note that the remaining slides might reference “2003 Server” in lieu of “Server 2003”. These are screenshots taken from another project/example and for the purpose of this document, you would continue to use “Server 2003” for your example and replace the wording “2003 Server” to keep continuity.

41. Creating A Virtual Machine Your screen should now look like this… Click next to continue

42. Creating A Virtual Machine Accept the default setting of using the recommended RAM and click Next (as you gain experience you will have the option to change the RAM settings at any time.)

43. Creating A Virtual Machine Choose the option to create a new virtual hard disk and click next to continue…

44. Creating A Virtual Machine The name and location should all ready be pointing to your my documents/my virtual machines/Microsoft Virtual PC Machines/Server 2003 folder so just click next to continue

45. Creating A Virtual Machine Verify that everything is correct and click finish to complete setting up a Virtual Machine called Server 2003

46. Creating A Virtual Machine If you navigate to your my documents/my virtual machines/Microsoft Virtual PC/Server 2003 folder you should have two files there. One file should be Virtual Machine Hard Drive Image and Virtual Machine Settings File

47. Creating A Virtual Machine Your Virtual PC Console should now show Server 2003 on it

49. Configuring A Virtual Machine Click on the 2003 Server machine and then click settings.

50. Configuring A Virtual Machine The first setting we will change is the undo disks. As the description says enabling this setting will enable us (you the students) to undo any changes made or save the changes made, consider this the Oops Insurance Policy

51. Configuring A Virtual Machine Next we want to be sure that the correct Network setting is enabled, this is necessary if you want to be able to surf the web using your virtual machine.

52. Configuring A Virtual Machine To do this click on the network setting on the left side of the screen. Change Adapter 1 to read Shared networking (NAT). That’s it now let’s install the Operating System on our new virtual Machine and start using it

54. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine First Click on 2003 Server on your Virtual PC Console and then click start

55. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine After Clicking start you should see this screen appear

56. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine When this screen appears, click on CD and select either capture ISO image or use physical CD drive depending if you burned the ISO image to a CD or are using it in its native state.

Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine When this screen appears navigate to your “my documents/ downloads” folder click on the en_win_srv_2003_r2_standard_cd 1 and click on open (for ISO only) if using the physical CD it will act like a regular PC reading the drive from the point you made the selection.

61. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Select either option here per your preference. “Quick” is the quickest method and the second option takes longer but is more reliable on an aging host drive.

62. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine You should now see this screen as formatting begins. This process is the same process used when installing an Operating System on an actual machine and its purpose is to prepare the virtual hard drive for accepting and using software to perform tasks

63. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine As the installation process progresses this screen will eventually appear. Just click next…

64. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine This screen requires you to type in your name or the name of the person for which the software is being loaded for, the Organization is not necessary but can be filled out if desired

65. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Type in the product key provided to you by either your Instructor or from Dream Spark depending on where you obtained your copy of the software. Then click next to continue

66. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Just accept the default settings and click next to continue

67. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Accept the default setting for computer name and enter an administrator password if desired. For a more secure password try a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. The longer the password the better for security purposes

70. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Congratulations. Your installation of a Virtual Operating System is almost complete at this stage

71. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine When this screen appears click the Action menu item then select the ctrl+alt+del item from the pop-up menu.

72. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Move your mouse inside the Virtual Machine window and click it. Now type in your administrator password and click ok, please note that until you don’t install the Virtual Machine extensions under the Action Menu you will need to press Ctrl & ALT from the right side of your keyboard to navigate back to the host machine/desktop.

73. Installing An Operating System On A Virtual Machine Congratulations you have successfully completed the task of installing a Virtual Machine complete with operating system; however you still need to install the Support files contained on the second ISO file or CD depending on the route you took.

74. Installing Virtual Machine Add Ons Just click on CD from the VPC menu item, capture ISO Image, navigate to your my documents / downloads folder and click on the en_win_srv_2003_r2_standard_cd2 file click open.

75. Configuring Server 2003 cont. Or swap CD’s from the physical drive bay. Depending on the method you selected at the beginning of the configuration process.

Installing Virtual Machine Add Ons After installation of your Server is complete you may want to go ahead and click on Actions from the VPC menu and Install Virtual Machine Add-ons/extensions so that you will be able to navigate between the host machine and your virtual machine without having to press any additional keys. Installation is now complete. Have fun with it and remember if something goes wrong just delete the VHD and VMC files from your virtual machines folder and start over. These are also the same two files you would copy if you wanted to backup or duplicate the Virtual environment.

77. But what if someone gives me A VHD file How Do I use it in my Virtual Machine?

78. Adding an Existing Virtual Machine to Our Virtual Console We will add an existing Virtual Machine Called Server 2003 to our console. To begin we first click on new.

80. Adding an Existing Virtual Machine to Our Virtual Console Click on browse and navigate to the folder where your existing Virtual Hard drive is located. In this case it is the my documents / my virtual machines/ Microsoft Virtual PC Machines/2003 Server folder click on the 2003 server file and the click open
