3. A STEP TOWARDS ‘SAFE CAMPUS’
No task is as important as creating safe learning environment for our Laxmi
International School students. It is the prior most duty of the School to ensure the
parents a safe hand over their children. Every year hundreds of children are victims of
various calamities and hazards in the school area, in this nation. We need to take some
concrete steps and know many aspects to overcome any mishaps in and around the
school area. For example, does the staff or children know the chain of command in case
of an incident? Does everyone know who is responsible for what in an emergency? Do
all teachers know what they would do if confronted with a situation of fire in a
classroom? Have the entrance and exit been checked to ensure clear access to open
spaces? These are just few questions to be revisited periodically. This booklet essentially
highlights the School Safety guidelines and measures to create a safer school
environment.

The whole campus is divided into various geographical zones. The staff needs to be aware
of the possible threats in each area which will help them to be proactive than reactive. Each
area is been allotted with a team who is responsible for any kind of help in an emergency.

FLOOD

1. In case of flood ensure that everybody is alerted through appropriate
announcement media.
2. Move to the higher and farther from flood area.
3. Beware of snakes, which may have moved to drier areas.
4. Listen and co‐operate with life savers.
5. If possible use water proofing materials like sandbags, plastic sheets.
6. Shut off utilities like electricity, gas cylinder.
Don’ts:
1. Do not walk into water of unknown depth and current. Use the stick to know the
water level before moving ahead.
2. Do not swim in the flood water and attempt to cross flood water.
3. Lock yourself in a car, on the loft, etc. during flood.
4. Do not drink flood water.

23. EARTHQUAKE
Do’s
1. As soon as you are aware of the fact that you are in the midst of a quake rush to an
open space quickly.
2. Stand next to a solid object only, which can withstand any fall and not likely to get
crushed easily.
3. Keep away from Electricity wires and poles, slopes and walls that are liable to fall.
4. Turn off the water, gas, and electricity.
5. If you are driving, stop the vehicle immediately but take care not to park close to a
building, wall, slopes, electricity wires, and cables. Stay inside the vehicle.
Don’ts:
1. Do not panic, it will never help.
2. Do not stand nearby windows, mirrors, and light furniture.
3. Do not turn ON electrical switches as there may be gas leaks or short‐circuits that
can cause fire.
4. Do not run and do not wander round the streets.

24. STORM / CYCLONE

1. Close all the windows and doors and stay indoors.
2. Stand below the strongest portion of the building /furniture
3. Remain indoors until advised that the cyclone has passed away.
4. After the storm dry the electrical appliances before use.
5. Be careful of fallen power lines, fallen trees etc.

25. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
BITES
1. For minor wounds ‐ Wash the injury thoroughly with water and soap. Apply an antibiotic
cream to avert any infection and cover the wound with a clean bandage.
2. For deep wounds: If the animal causes a deep perforation of the skin that causes blood
loss, apply pressure with a clean dry cloth to stop the bleeding. Visit a doctor
immediately.
3. If symptoms of infection such as redness, swelling, increased pain or irritation is noticed,
visit a doctor without delay.
4. If you suspect that you may have contracted rabies, see your doctor right away.
POISONING
In case of poisoning, call for a doctor without delay. While waiting for medical aid to arrive,
one should follow the steps mentioned below:
1. If the victim has been exposed to poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, get them
into an area with fresh air immediately.
2. If a person has spilled poison on their clothing, skin or eyes, remove the clothing. Splash
the skin or eyes or skin with cool or lukewarm water to remove traces of the poisonous
substances.
3. If a person has ingested a poisonous substance, induce vomiting to clear the stomach of
the poison. Visit a doctor immediately.
BURNS
The first aid for burns depends on the degree or extent of the burn. The treatment for
minor burns is quite different from that of major burns. For minor burns, as well as second‐
degree burns that is limited to an area of between 2 to 3 inches in diameter, follow these
steps:

26. 1. Cool the burn. This is done by holding the burn under cold running water for around 5
minutes or until the pain dips. You may also immerse the burned area in cold water or
cool it with cold compresses. The process of cooling the burn lessens swelling by
conducting heat away from the skin. Never put ice on the burn.
2. Cover the burned area with a sterile gauze bandage: Don't use fluffy cotton, as it may
irritate the skin. Wrap the gauze loosely to avoid putting pressure on the wound.
Bandaging the burned skin keeps air away from the injury. This protects blistered skin
and helps reduce pain.
3. Take a painkiller. These are available over the counter at all chemists shop. Never give
Aspirin to children or teenagers.
For major burns, ring for emergency medical assistance. Until an emergency unit arrives,
follow these steps:
1. Don't remove burnt clothing. However, do ensure that the victim is no longer in contact
with burning materials or exposed to smoke or heat.
2. Don't immerse victims with critical large burns in cold water. Doing so may cause shock.
3. Check for signs that the person is alive such as a heartbeat, breathing, coughing or
movement. If such signs do not exist, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR.
4. Cover the area of the burn with a moist, cool, moist, sterilized bandage. You may also
use a clean, moist cloth or moist towels.
FALLS
1. If someone falls down from height, first check any injuries on head.
2. Check for any abnormal symptom like nausea, vomiting, acute stomach pain after
the fall which may be result of some internal injury. Contact doctor immediately.
3. If pain in bones does not subside after pain killer spray or medicine and there is
swelling on the injured part, it may be a bone fractured.

27. SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT
Do’s
1. Make use of emergency numbers provided in the bus.
2. Try to use the emergency exits.
Don’ts
1. Do not panic and start rushing/running.
2. Do not try to get down from the running bus.

28. FIRE
Do’s
1. Make prompt use of fire extinguisher situated on the nearest wall.
2. Maintain a safe distance when extinguishing the flames.
3. Aim at the base of the fire.
4. Keep your calm, leave the building immediately — don’t stop to collect belongings.
5. Try to climb down in the building instead of climbing up.
6. Check door handles by touching lightly with the back of your hand. If they are hot, don’t
open them & find another way out.
7. When leaving, close doors behind you
8. Stay low in smoke — this helps reduce smoke inhalation.
9. If your clothes catch fire, Stop, Drop & Roll to put them out.
10. Cool burns quickly with water — get medical attention immediately.
Don’ts
1. Never ignore fire alarm, panic and run around in wrong directions.
2. Don’t use fire extinguisher if you have no idea on how to operate them.
3. Don’t use water agents on grease and oil fires or use dry chemical extinguishers to
electrical devices or anything with metal because it is corrosive.
4. Don’t aim at the flames of the fire.
5. Don’t stand too close to the fire or even plan to walk on those extinguished areas.

29. SNAKE BITES
Snake is the most feared animal in the world and after a snake bite half people die due to
fear. All snakes are not venomous most of them are non venomous, but people can die due
to heart attack because of fear of snake. So the key thing in this is to remain calm and get to
the doctor as soon as possible. If possible get the picture of the snake so it can help doctor
to choose the anti venom treatment. Be safe. Also take care while traveling outdoors.
Do's :
1. Remain calm: First thing don’t get panic, be cool. Most chances are there snake is non
venomous.
2. Remove shoes, jewelry and tight clothing from bitten area.
3. Wash the bite site with soap and warm water to remove any excess venom.
4. Get the victim to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible.
5. Observe the person's symptoms and record them and show it to the doctor.
Don'ts
1. Do not give anything to the victim to eat unless specified by doctor.
2. Do not attempt to suck venom out with your mouth. It's very dangerous and don't work
also.
3. Do not let the patient get shocked or emotionally exited. Keep him in a calm place.
4. Do not try to capture the snake‐ it may put you in danger.

30. WINTER SEASON CARE
Do’s:
1. Ensure to stay warm while waiting for school bus in low temperature conditions.
2. Dress in layers so you can adjust to changing conditions.
3. Most of your body heat is lost through your head so wear a hat, preferably one that
covers your ears.
4. Mittens provide more warmth to your hands than gloves.
5. Wear waterproof, insulated boots to help avoid hypothermia or frostbite by keeping
your feet warm and dry.
6. Keep yourself well hydrated as you may not drink sufficient water in winter due to
less thirst.
7. Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia which is a drop in body temperature to 95
degrees Fahrenheit or less than this and can be a serious medical condition:
confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. Seek medical attention
immediately if you have these symptoms.
8. In case of frostbite get the patient indoor, place the affected area in warm water.
9. Recognize frostbite warning signs: gray, white or yellow skin discoloration,
numbness, waxy feeling skin. Seek medical attention immediately if you have these
symptoms
Don’ts:
1. Do not overdress or overexert that can lead to heat illness.
2. Don’t allow the children to overexert and sweat. Sweating cools the body which is
hazardous in winter and it becomes difficult to warm up again.
3. In frostbite, do not rub the frozen area or put it in very hot water.
4. Do not take very hot water bath.

31. SUMMER SEASON CARE
Do’s
1. Drink lot of water and fluids to keep cool.
2. Protect your head and eyes from hot sun as you may get heat stroke with continuous
exposure to hot sun.
3. Wear cotton clothes so that your body can breath.
4. Avoid eating milk products and other dairy products in summer as they tend to spoil
fastest.
Don’t
1. Don’t drink water immediately after coming from hot sun, let your body cool down for
some time.
2. Don’t move out in very hot sun immediately after sitting in A.C. room for a long time.
3. Do not store the food outside for a long time, refrigerate immediately after use.

32. MONSOON SEASON CARE
Do’s:
1. Carry a proper rain coat while travelling to School.
2. Wipe off the sweat and grime from your face and bathe often to feel cool and fresh. In
the monsoon, keep dry; especially your feet.
3. Drink plenty of potable – boiled or filtered water.
4. Avoid eating roadside foods – cut fruits, chaat or ‘pani puris’, etc, fermented and raw
preparations like salads.
5. Clean your salads and leafy vegetables under running water. Steaming them is the best
way to get rid of germs. Soaking the greens in salt water for about 10 minutes can help
remove insects.
6. Avoid eating stale foods.
7. Wash your hands before handling food, after eating food and after visiting the toilet.
Maintain good personal hygiene.
8. Carry out thorough pre‐monsoon checks for any water leakages from faulty plumbing,

33. OUTDOOR VISITS/ PICNICS

2. Check the medical history of the students for any abnormalities, coming for outdoor
visits.
3. Know the place, nearest emergency hospitals and other helps before going.
4. Prescribe the children necessary things to be carried according to the climate and
place of visit.
5. Prepare emergency plans for possible threats during the visit.
Don’ts
1. Don’t ignore whether forecasts and alerts in area of visits.
2. Don’t allow anyone to move in unknown places not prescribed in the plan.
3. Don’t allow anyone to swim or get into water at unknown places.
4. Don’t allow to eat anywhere else than the prescribed place in the visit.

34. HOSTAGES/KIDNAPPING
Do’s :
1. If not managed to escape in the beginning and being confined and transported, do not
struggle, calm yourself mentally and concentrate on surviving.
2. Attempt to visualize the route being taken, make a mental note of turns, street noise,
smells, etc. Try to keep track of the amount of time spent between points.
3. Be co‐operative, observant and speak normally if asked something but retaining your
sense of pride.
4. If an attempt is made to rescue you, keep a low profile and immediately follow all the
instructions.
Don’ts
1. Do not panic and overreact in such situations.
2. Do not run or make sudden moves that the tense rescuer may interpret as hostile.
3. Don't be upset if a rescuer isn't sure whether you are a Kidnapper/terrorist or hostage.
Even if you are handcuffed and searched, do not resist. Just wait for the confusion to
clear.

35. TERROR ATTACK
Do’s:
1. Try to remain calm and try to follow the instructions of school authority and do not
lose your presence of mind.
2. Keep all the help line numbers provided handy.
3. Be alert. If you come across any suspicious person or belongings, immediately report
to the authority.
4. Try to analyze the situation. Rumors spread easily in such situations. Try to know the
facts from reliable sources.
5. Look for a place to hide in case of a sudden gunfire or bombarding.
6. If you are caught in the gun fire, lie flat on the ground.

2. Do not move in unprotected areas.
