On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl 4 reactor exploded near
Pripyat, Ukrain, allowing clouds of radioactive smoke to be
released into the atmosphere. Thousands of people died of
radiation related deaths. The Soviet Union covered up the
incident, so we have no exact number of deaths. This book is
dedicated to the workers and firefighters who fought the fires at
Chernobyl, and to everyone that died because of it.

40. 4/26/86: The workers
here at Chernobyl just
conducted a test on the
reactor. I don't know
much about it, but I know
it failed. The reactor's
making funny noises. It'll
sort itself out... I have
such a terrible headache.
I need a painkiller.

I smelled steam! I should
have said something! I
remember a noise, and a
flash of light! The roof
flew up, if I remember
right. The noise like a
thousand banshees! I ran!
Things crashed around
me! I didn't know what to
do... I ran to the woods. I
didn't know what else to
do... I'm exhausted. I'll
write some more soon.
