- * I have greatly enjoyed this class. Through our learning process the last several weeks I have learned to More aptly identiy and desribe aspects and dimensions of songs, begun to understand how a songwriter works with both words and music to express, Emulate the meathods of , and better my songwriting. In addition to these, I have also gathered much information about myself through our time in this class. Improvization and freedom of expression greatly impacted me. More than learning to write music, learning how to live life Identify and describe some musical, textual and cultural dimensions in the songs studied as exemplars. Develop a basic understanding of how songwriters work within the dimensions of words and music to express. Manipulate these dimensions in their own songs with a primary focus on the relationship of text to melody. Create original songs or parts of songs that demonstrate their understanding of how songs are created. *

- * Like I said, I have learned a lot as a songwriter this semester. I started out without much knowledge of songwriting at all. I've always loved both writing and music. I play the piano , guitar and love to sing, so this class seemed like a fun way of completing some OU requirements. (Of course I didnt realize how much work would go into it) Knowledge that I have gained includes musical terminology, songwriting meathods, As well as how to make a song more than just a song. There is so much that goes into producing quality material- much that one can hear without being taught, but can't describe or put their finger on. There is also much that I never knew went into a songwriting process. I can appreciate a song for so much more knowing the creative process that go into it.
- * There were many meaningful moments for me this semester. My favorite lesson was definitely collaboration. In life, I usually enjoy working with people so much more than working alone, and I loved to see how much was accomplished by everyone when two heads were put together. There is a lot of extra work that went into working together, but there is a lot to be said about the benefits of two minds to critique and create. It was hard for me to make time for them, but when I finally forced myself to set aside a quite moment amidst my crazyness, I really emjoye our readings. While there are many sections in both books that I loved, one of my favorites was form the inprovization book by Nochmanovich. “ The heart of
- * One famous songwriter that stuck out to me in “in your own words”, was dolly parton. In general, I've always thought her to be an inspirational person. I admire the confidence and independence and strength that radiates from her words. She talked about the difference between the image the world has of you and who you really are – and the importance of being true to the the real you, not the you others think they know. She also talked about not letting critisism get you down. She emphisized the role of confidence and taking critisism in but not letting it “cripple to talents god gave her.' I think its also iimportant to take in the encouragement of others and let it blossome that confidence! And this class really was full of encouragement. Phyllis always found a positive and uplifting way to phrase everything, where, even when offering suggestions or telling us we forgot something, it still felt like a warm hug or uplifting praise. I also found all of the classmates to be very encouraging. Its not easy – at least not for me – to share somehitng your not sure your good at with ppl you dont know.Week 6 in particular, I felt like I was getting no where with my song from the previous week and was beyoooond frustrated.. but posted what I had anway... and was so encouraged by alexis and stephen who said they enjoyed what I did. Even if I wasn't satisfied( granted, I tend to be quite hard on myself) it was nice to know that others didnt thinkit sounded like dog poop. The encouragment offered by the class always gave me enough stamina to make it through my next crazy week.
- * I talked about collaboration being my favorite lesson and idea... I had a cool take home from this as my then fiance and I got together to arrange a song to sing at our wedding. We didnt write it – instead we mashed a few different songs together – but with the knowledge of the little things that go into making a song great, We were able to better fit the pieces together! It was fun working on it goether and fun playing at the wedding as well!! Definitely a great take-home moment!! I've mentioned this several time's im sure, but another huge take home for me was non-musical. The ability to be creative and let myself be free in all areas of my life – music and otherwise – was huge this past semester . In a time in my life that could have been the death of me with all the craziness, This classwas a great stress outlet and quiet learning place for my heart.
- * I touched on this a bit while talking about class encouragment but I was really amazed at how safe the classroom felt. Coming into this, my feelings were all but ssafe. It tooke me about 15 times to record that silly little intro we had to do the first week. I was sooo stressed about it! And while its still always a little intimidating to post where your vulnerable, the judgement free atmosphere really enabled the growth that I think we all felt. Encouragment from everybody gave me the confidnece to continue on each week and push myself to do more.
