I don’t have children of my own but I do teach and I can appreciate the struggles that parents must go through when trying to control or manage media. For example at my high school two weeks ago we became fully wireless. And being out in the county, kids weren’t always able to get a cell phone signal. So, the other day one of my Media Studies students stood up in the middle of class – like a scene out of the movie Braveheart and bellowed “I HAVE A SIGNAL!” ....I was a little concerned.

Megan, believing she had been rejected by "Josh," committed suicide in her home.Six weeks after Megan’s death, her parents learned that "Josh Evans" never existed. He was an online character created by Lori Drew, then 47, who lived four houses down the street. Because Ms. Drew, the mother of one of Megan's former friends, had taken Megan on family vacations, she knew the girl had been prescribed antidepression medication, Mrs. Meier said, and that she had a Myspace page.In a highly unusual use of a federal law generally employed in computer fraud cases, a federal grand jury indicted Ms. Drew in May 2008 on charges that she had used a phony online identity to trick and taunt Megan. Facebook has changed its settings to allow you to control what you post right on the page where it is posted. Add location information, tag photos and friends, and determine how you share: Friends, Friends of Friends, or make it Public.When you have location services turned on in your phone, your photos will store location information (this is called geotagging).
At the bottom of the Customize Settings page, notice the feature “Include me in People Here Now”. Unclick this to disable the feature. Also, see the “edit privacy settings” for photo albums, and scroll down to edit who can post on your wall, who gets to see tagged photos or video of you and more. No contact information (like mobile phone numbers, address, or email address) should be available .
If you have the My Places App installed on Facebook or on your mobile, you need to Customize the Privacy to indicate who will be able to see your location or what will be posted on “People Here Now”. Friends using the Places location-sharing tool can announce teens' locations by "tagging" them if teens allow this function by opting in; teens will be immediately notified of the "tag" if they are using the Facebook app on a smartphone or via their email. There are many GPS enabled apps on mobile phones such as Here I Am or Check-In. Many smart phones encode the location of where pictures are taken. This is called Geotagging. If one posts a photo that has been geotagged (longitude and latitude are recorded when the photo is taken thanks to GPS enabled phones) anyone who has a copy of the photo can access one’s location.
Twitter allows for users to update their status in 140 characters of less. You can follow others and get mobile notifications when people update. Parents should be aware that when their children subscribe to or follow a celebrity, they will be exposed to celebrity self-promotion and even product peddling. Kim Kardashian thinks it is important that we all know she is on her way to the gym and just loves her new Reebok Easytone shoes. She even provides a web address for those of her followers who want to purchase the same shoes.All the same rules apply with Twitter as with any Social Networking site:Be aware of phishing, spam, identity impersonation, geotagging, and applications that may use/share your information.

Phones are no longer just mobile phones, they are mini computers. Teens should be aware that their conversations can be easily recorded with Applications like Recorder Pro. These phones are also used as video recorders or cameras. 2008 - Six teenage girls and two boys were charged as adults in the March 30 beating in Lakeland, Fla. of a 16-year-old acquaintance. The teens videotaped the assault and allegedly threatened to post the film on the Internet at MySpace and YouTube. I have to appreciate celebrity support of anti-bullying laws and encouraging messages to our youth.e.g. Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”

Never reply to harassing messages.Report the problem to your phone service, website, or internet provider. If it’s a persistent problem you can change the phone number.Know the policies, user agreements and guidelines of the websites you use to determine what is appropriate and acceptable content. Most service providers have appropriate use policies that restrict users from harassing others over the Internet. Meet with school officials (Principal, Safe Schools Team) and ask for help in resolving the situation.Report any incident of online harassment and physical threats to your local police and your Internet Service Provider (ISP).Also, remember…Youtube is for a community of users and you are responsible for flagging inapropriate videos and comments.

Overtexting is a newly recognized form of dating abuse and harassment. Love is Respect.org All cell phone companies offer unlimited texting. Kids live in an always-on environment. It’s not uncommon for teens to receive texts in the middle of the night.The teen drama TV show “Pretty Little Liars” revolves around four girls who are being digitally harassed and stalked via their phones. These girls never seek adult assistance or report the incidents to the police. Most social media sites include a Statement of Rights and Responsibilities...you will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user. You will not post content that is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.There is also a "Report/Block person" link available from the bottom of the abusive user's profile. If you learn that someone is continuing to make abusive comments about your teen even after they've been blocked, you or a friend can report that person on your teen's behalf.For Cell phones, you can block numbers but it is also important to contact your cellphone provider, document it, share it with an adult, and report any threats.

Don’t cry....you better be certain these behaviours and attitudes are being mimicked online.Take for example the daredevil sport of Parkour...Parkour is the skill of moving through an urban landscape quickly as first developed by the military. Unfortunately, kids attempt to make their own Jackass stunts or Parkour videos with little supervision or training. Usually these videos are set to cool music and you very rarely see the full consequences of their epic fails.Type in “Parkour Fail” and enjoy a multitude of injurious videos.
