The drama goes digital when MTV premieres their original movie (Dis)connected, a
film that follows a group of kids whose lives are connected by their interactions online.
The film was inspired by a true story, and is connected with MTV’s “A Thin Line”
campaign, which is trying to put a stop to digital abuse.

  2. I don’t have children of my own but I do teach and I can appreciate the struggles that parents must go through when trying to control or manage media. For example at my high school two weeks ago we became fully wireless. And being out in the county, kids weren’t always able to get a cell phone signal. So, the other day one of my Media Studies students stood up in the middle of class – like a scene out of the movie Braveheart and bellowed “I HAVE A SIGNAL!” ....I was a little concerned.
  3. Social Media is used by youth as a means to share, express, and talk.Share-videos through sites like YouTube, -pictures on Flickr -documents through Google docs where groups of people can edit and store files -information as a wiki collaborator-music sharing through peer to peer sites like FrostWire. Express-Blogging on sites like blogger.com-Mircroblog on sites like Twitter (update your status is 140 characters or less)-Broadcast news live on Live Cast-Subscribe to RSS news feeds to get the latest information on a celebrity and leave a comment-Create a personalized interactive poster of oneself with video, music, photos and text and share with others. (Glogster.com) Talk-via MSN instant messaging-web chatting on “tinychat”-create their own social networking group on Ning-Skype to talk using webcams -and play against other gamers online while communicating as opponents or teammates.
  4. After recent rioters ued BBM to communicate. With one ‘ping’ rioters could coordinate where the next looting would take place. BBM offers a free mobile phone messaging service open to anyone with a BlackBerry smartphonePublic social media forums like Facebook and Twitter were also used to rally the troops but this technology was not as fast or as effective as BBM (which is also sponsored by Jay-Z)It is cheap, and confidential. ...but RIM decided to assist police in investigating criminal actions. Authorities have now begun arrests of these social media misusers who incited violence. So the question is, is social media to blame? Or are the users?
  5. Now, I want to be clear, I love media (maybe not Twilight) but would like our children and students to make healthy media choices; to be responsible users. They should dominate their media not be dominated by it.

When it comes to your online identity and the anonymity of users one must be very careful about what you share and say and to whom you communicate. Now, here’s a surefire way to scare the heck out of your friends. Take the Lollipop Test to see how much information you are sharing on Facebook.http://www.takethislollipop.com/
  16. Tip One: Know who you are chatting withOne of the most notorious cases of identity fraud on social networking sites would have to be the “Megan Meier story”Megan Meier, 13, began receiving nasty messages from a boy after a few weeks of an online flirtation with him, via her MySpace account, ending with one that suggested “the world would be a better place” without her. Megan, believing she had been rejected by "Josh," committed suicide in her home.Six weeks after Megan’s death, her parents learned that "Josh Evans" never existed. He was an online character created by Lori Drew, then 47, who lived four houses down the street. Because Ms. Drew, the mother of one of Megan's former friends, had taken Megan on family vacations, she knew the girl had been prescribed antidepression medication, Mrs. Meier said, and that she had a Myspace page.In a highly unusual use of a federal law generally employed in computer fraud cases, a federal grand jury indicted Ms. Drew in May 2008 on charges that she had used a phony online identity to trick and taunt Megan. She pled not guilty to the charges and the case went to trial in November 2008.-New York TimesShe was found guilty of three minor counts of violating MySpace's terms of use, but was cleared of the more serious charges that carried a maximum of 20 years in jail. Many states are now pursuing cyberbullying laws.
  17. Tip 2: Never assume your actions are anonymousTake Formspring for example. This app allows users to post questions to which anyone can respond. The responses are anonymous. BUT, remember all apps collect information and you are leaving a trail.
  18. Tip 3: Just because you read it, doesn’t mean it’s realStudents today can manipulate text messages to appear as though they are from another person.
  19. Tip 4: Virtual Reality can become a realityOnce your son or daughter has moved on from webkinz, he or she might begin venturing into the world of Habbo. Before registering on any site check out Account Killer:Use this to help permanently delete your profile or account. Check out their “Black list” to see if the website will allow you to delete your account before you register.http://www.accountkiller.com/en/e.g. You can't delete your account. Habbo is pretty unclear about when -at all- your account will be deleted. From their help pages:“We do not delete accounts at request. If you no longer wish to use an account you can take all your furni off of it, delete all rooms and spend all credits, the account will then be removed the next time that Sulake clear out unused names.”See https://help.habbo.com/entries/285194-general-account-questions(Who the heck is Sulake?)
  20. Tip 5: Don’t take the baitThe worm's name -- Rbot -- comes from the fact that it's designed to turn a remote computer into a robot that will do the virus writer's bidding.Grooming Techniques:Let’s go private = Let’s move to a private chat room, instant messaging or phone.Where’s the computer in your house? = Helps the predator understand if the parents are around. What kinds of music do you like? Movie? Hobbies? Clothes store?= This is helps the groomer get to know you better and know what gifts to offer.I can help you get a modeling job = They are flattering you, to get you to cooperate. You seem upset. Tell me what’s bothering you = Trying to get your trust using sympathy.Where do you live? What school do you go to? What’s your phone number = Asking for personal info – usually after the target is feeling comfortable. If you don’t do what I ask I’ll show your parents the photos you’ve sent me = Intimidation and threats – scare tactics to achieve the predator’s goal

  27. Fact 4: It’s ForeverBut it’s important for our kids to know that whether it’s in a virtual world or on facebook what they do online IS FOREVER! Nothing is ever PRIVATE!One of the biggest concerns in terms of technology and cell phone use is “sexting”See the Case of Jesse Loganhttp://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/29546030/ns/today-parenting/Teens aged 13-17 are the biggest texters of all youth averaging 2,272 text messages a month. The conversations may sound something like this: “Wut up?” “Nm. U?” “Nm”. According to Nielsen company “that’s almost 77 messages a day.”Especially when kids are now using their cell phones and computers to share racing photos of themselves in the phenomenon called “sexting”.According to Common Sense Media, 22% of teen girls and 20% of teen boys have sent nude or semi-nude photos of themselves 22% of teens admit that technology makes them personally more forward and aggressive 38% say exchanging sexy content makes dating or hooking up with others more likely 29% believe those exchanging sexy content are “expected” to date or hook up Unfortunately, revealing photos can be resent to a vast audience andSending a sexual image to a minor is illegal. “A 15 year old Pennsylvania girl is facing child pornography charges for sending nude photos of herself to other kids. A 19 year old was thrown out of college and is now registered as a sex offender for 25 years because he sent nude pictures of his girlfriend to other teens.” – Today msnbc“Under the Criminal Code offenders who possess images of children under the age of 18 engaging in sexual activity may now be sentenced up to five years in prison.”

  32. Facebook has changed its settings to allow you to control what you post right on the page where it is posted. Add location information, tag photos and friends, and determine how you share: Friends, Friends of Friends, or make it Public. When you have location services turned on in your phone, your photos will store location information (this is called geotagging).
  33. At the bottom of the Customize Settings page, notice the feature “Include me in People Here Now”. Unclick this to disable the feature. There are many GPS enabled apps on mobile phones such as Here I Am or Check-In. Many smart phones encode the location of where pictures are taken. This is called Geotagging. If one posts a photo that has been geotagged (longitude and latitude are recorded when the photo is taken thanks to GPS enabled phones) anyone who has a copy of the photo can access one’s location.

  47. Technology has made flaming and bullying inescapable and at times intensifies the digital drama.Remember all of these social networking tools can be utilized on mobile phones. Phones are no longer just mobile phones, they are mini computers. Teens should be aware that their conversations can be easily recorded with Applications like Recorder Pro. These phones are also used as video recorders or cameras. 2008 - Six teenage girls and two boys were charged as adults in the March 30 beating in Lakeland, Fla. of a 16-year-old acquaintance. The teens videotaped the assault and allegedly threatened to post the film on the Internet at MySpace and YouTube. These girls never seek adult assistance or report the incidents to the police. Check out the site I Can Stalk U (that raises awareness about inadvertent information sharing) to learn how to protect yourself by setting the controls on your phone. http://icanstalku.com/Also see:http://www.commonsensemedia.org/how-set-parental-controls-iphone

Unfortunately, kids attempt to make their own Jackass stunts or Parkour videos with little supervision or training. Usually these videos are set to cool music and you very rarely see the full consequences of their epic fails.Type in “Parkour Fail” and enjoy a multitude of injurious videos.
