4. New Member Perspective
When I came to UCLA, I really did not know what I wanted to do with myself for
the next four years. Though I really did not think I was the “sorority type”, everyone told
me I needed to at least go through the recruitment process and see what happens. On my
first day of rush, I had no idea how I was going to narrow my options down. However, by
the end of the day, I knew I wanted to be part of it all.
It was hard coming to college where I didn’t know anyone. I have had the same
best friends since fifth grade so having to make all new friends was a really scary thing.
Once I joined Kappa Delta though, I had more friends than I could ever imagine. I love that
each and every one of my sisters, though they all have such different personalities, are so
understanding and down to earth. None of them are ever fake or stuck up and they are so
easy to get along with. Whenever I have a problem or I am upset about something, I know
my sisters are there and I can completely trust them. That’s difficult to find in such a large
school such as UCLA.
One of my favorite things about Kappa Delta is the variety
of personalities in our house. Even though everyone is so
different, we are all enthusiastic about our sisterhood and it is an
amazing bond that most people outside of Greek life would not be
able to understand. Another thing I love about Kappa Delta is that
besides having a great time together, there are always girls who I
can go to when I need academic help or advice. There are always
girls who have taken the same classes as I am, or that share the
same major as me and they are always willing to answer
questions and help in any way necessary.
In the future, I really hope to be on council. I want to better
the chapter and be able to give back in return for all of the things
it has given me. Not only this, I really want to follow in the older
members’ footsteps to welcome future new members and be there
for all of my sisters as a friend and a leader.
Looking back at it now, it is hard to imagine my first Brittany Marble
quarter without Kappa Delta. Rushing was probably one of the best
decisions I have made in my life because if I hadn’t, I would be having a
completely different college experience than I am now. I have met so many amazing
young women and I am so thankful that Kappa Delta has brought all of us together.

6. Workshops
My goal as this year’s new Vice President of Operations is to effectively schedule a variety of
workshops that follow the Kappa Delta programming requirements while at the same time serving the
needs of the members. It has been a constant goal this year to restructure the way workshops are
conducted to use them to match the interests of the chapter and to address the issues facing the
women of Alpha Iota.
The Kappa Delta alumnae network, the
community and the greater Los Angeles area
compose a wealth of resources that offer
tremendous potential for workshops that can
educate, inspire, and energize the Alpha Iota
members. We have been trying to better utilize
those resources to present workshops to the
chapter that reflect the diversity of our sorority
and community as a whole. So far this year we have
enjoyed presentations from various organizations. Our very
own UCLA Greek advisor visited the Alpha Iota chapter to speak VP Operations Antoinette Brou with
on both risk management and the role Kappa Delta plays within Carol Field
the Greek community; Carol Field, a renowned psychotherapist,
spoke on relationships and the risk young women face when they are involved in an unhealthy
relationship ; and a representative from Prevent Child Abuse America shared information about this
tremendous philanthropic organization while members of Alpha Iota who have personally
experienced child abuse, in one form or another, were given the opportunity to share their touching
stories to the chapter.
Along with outside speakers coming to present
to the chapter, there are also certain workshops set
aside with the purpose of supporting the chapter
during some especially stressful times. For example,
every fifth and tenth week of each quarter, there is a
“Midterm/Final Study Night”. These study nights allow
the chapter to focus on their schoolwork along with
any midterms or finals they may have during that time.
There are also seasonal workshops which help the chapter better
Recruitment Workshop activity prepare for any upcoming big events including formal
on confidence recruitment, official visits, and even our philanthropic event
“Shamrock.”
Workshops topic selection is based on a chapter wide survey that asks members to evaluate
the strength of past workshops and give suggestions for future workshops. Based on the results of this
past survey, we are planning workshops on resume building, self‐defense/awareness and
sustainability within our own chapter house. Workshops are an incredible opportunity for Alpha Iota
members to gain helpful information from local and campus‐based organizations and to network both
inside and outside the KD community.
We are always looking for local alumnae who are interested in sharing their experience and
expertise or who have connections to individuals or organizations that would present a workshop to
the chapter. If you are interested in getting involved with Kappa Delta programming and workshops
please contact Vice President of Operations, Antoinette Brou, by email
at AntoinetteJBrou@Gmail.com. Thank You!
7. Shamrock
This year, the Alpha Iota Chapter of
Kappa Delta hosted its 7th annual
“White Rose Bowl”, a 7‐on‐7 flag
football tournament on the intramural
fields. Held on the intramural fields on
campus, our event supported Prevent
Child Abuse California and the Children
in Need Fund. Students representing
the entire Greek community of UCLA
spent the day learning about child
abuse prevention, eating dinner, and
competing in and watching flag football
games.

For the first time, our chapter reached out to new student groups throughout the UCLA
community and the winner of the fraternity bracket was a team who participated in a
Panhellenic philanthropy event for the first time.
We implemented our goal of reaching out to the
greater UCLA community by encouraging
participation from non‐IFC and Panhellenic
organizations. The winner of the men’s bracket

Latino Fraternal Organizations and first time

our chapter will strive to continue in our pursuit
to increase participation and public awareness on

At this years event, Alpha Iota excelled in both having two participants on committee,
Luz Kumpel and Courtney Hawker, as well as having a 15‐girl team of dancers. Committee
members worked for two quarters to promote the event, receive corporate donations, and
planning fundraising events to help dancers raise money. Additionally, most all members of
the sorority either supported their sisters via fiscal donations or by visiting the event for a few
hours as 'moralers’.
During Dance Marathon, UCLA students
commit to staying on their feet for 26 hours after
raising a minimum of $208 per participant. Though
an arduous challenge, all of our dancers were able to
make it through the marathon due to the support of
our sisterhood. Alpha Iota’s contributions helped

had raised over $400,000 before, so it was incredible
for our chapter to be such a part of this record‐

incredible cause and get through a huge challenge with the support of our sisterhood.
9. Relay for Life
One day. One night. One community. One fight. This is the Relay for Life
motto. Relay is a 24‐hour event that takes place once a year, and this year it took
place at UCLA. It is a life‐changing event for everyone involved, celebrating
survivors, remembering those we’ve lost, and fighting cancer by raising money for
the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society
funds cutting‐edge research, provides education and follow‐up
care for patient, and provides free programs to improve the
lives of many.
UCLA’s Drake Stadium held over 1,500 people on April
17‐18 this year. Alpha Iota had a team of 40 girls, almost
double from last year! As a team, we raised $1,400, and the
event as a whole has raised $132,000 and still counting
making us the first place university in California.

Our many contributions helped this cause greatly, and we’re excited to see what we

10. Philanthropy
The Alpha Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta has put great effort this year to increase their philanthropic efforts
within the UCLA community and throughout the greater Los Angeles area. From supporting all of the philanthropy
events of other houses, to substantially raising the bar for their annual Shamrock flag football tournament, to revamping
the structure of their Girl Scout program, the girls of Alpha Iota have demonstrated great pride in their chapter’s
dedication to the community while strengthening their sisterhood bond!
In 2010 alone, Kappa Delta participated in Pi Kappa Phi’s
Acoustic Coffee Night, Alpha Epsilon Pi’s “Hope for Haiti” drive, Tri
Delta’s Pancake Dinner, and Alpha Delta Chi and Alpha Gamma
Omega’s Kickball Tournament. Additionally, the girls supported Phi
Sigma Rho; UCLA’s engineering sorority, in their Water gun
Tournament for the first time. Delta Tau Delta held their annual
Delta Queen Pageant to benefit the City of Hope Cancer Research
Center and one of the KD sisters; Danielle Pineira won the title of
Delta Queen 2010! The chapter was there to support her and their
spirit made up a large portion of the points that helped her to win!
Throughout the month of February, KDs developed and
implemented creative methods to raise money for Prevent Child
Abuse America. They started the month off with a Jewelry Sale at
the house and a fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen. On
February 18th the girls of KD hosted their 7th annual “White Rose

Kappa Delta makes its presence known on the
UCLA campus and throughout the greater Los Angeles area
through excellent representation at philanthropic events in
the community. They had a huge team at UCLA’s Dance
Marathon, promoting awareness for the prevention of
pediatric AIDS and at Relay for Life, benefitting the American
cancer society. Veronica Fabrigas and Mallory Mitchell are
active members of Bruin Belles, a campus organization that
strives to foster community service in the UCLA community.
Selina Duran, Lauren Lombari and Colleen Hill dedicate
much of their time towards helping to build homes for
underprivileged communities in Los Angeles.
VP Membership Nicole Wong with her In addition to working as a chapter to make community service
UniCamp session a priority for Kappa Delta, the girls of Alpha Iota have individually
developed their own passions that allow them to contribute to the
greater Los Angeles area on a personal level. Nicole Wong, Sarah
Hoffman, Joy Shi, Courtney Lacroix, Jill Tuso, Michelle Collanton and Michelle Lin are currently in training to be camp
counselor for underprivileged children in UniCamp this summer. Katherine Taylor spent her spring break rebuilding
homes in New Orleans for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Brittany Chiang serves as the Director of Public Relations for
YOUTHphonics, an A’cappella group dedicated to bringing music training programs to high schools where performing
arts classes have been negatively affected by California’s budget cuts. Allison DeCant is a volunteer Junior Troop Leader
for Girl Scout Troop 8355 and is currently planning a workshop for various troops about the importance of being a Girl
Scout.
The ladies of Kappa Delta at UCLA bring commitment and enthusiasm to each of their philanthropic endeavors
and as a chapter will continue to do great things for their community.
11. Leadership
Continuing with the legacy of Kappa Deltas being heavily involved in extracurricular activities, this
year members of Alpha Iota vigorously sought to excel both in class, on campus, and in the community.
Despite the challenges that being a full‐time student presents, KDs are always seeking to become more
involved in all that they do. This year Alpha Iotas eagerly pursued leadership opportunities within the
house, the UCLA Greek system, and the campus community.
Colleen Meseck (President), Anne Flaherty (VP New Member Education), Nicole Wong (VP
Membership), Antoinette Brou (VP Operations), Brittany Chiang (VP Community Service), Kristina Sidrak
(VP Public Relations), Lauren Lombari (Secretary), Nadia Frances (VP Standards), and Joy Shi (Treasurer)
were all extremely excited to be elected as council members this Winter.
Katy Lunny, Sheeva Halati, Antoinette Brou, and Kristina Sidrak are all members of SAA, UCLA's
Student Alumni Association. SAA works on behalf of the UCLA Alumni Association to connect students,
alumni, and the University. Each year, SAA members plan countless official UCLA events; including Blue &
Gold Week (the rivalry related festivities leading up to the USC vs. UCLA football game), Spring Sing
(UCLA's annual musical event featuring student performances), Dinner for 12 Strangers (a program which
invites students to meet a cross‐section of Bruins), and Interview With a
Bruin (events that seek to bring Alumni and students into closer contact
for networking purposes).
We have a number of newly initiated members of Order of
Omega, an all Greek academic honors society requiring each member to
have a GPA of 3.2 or higher. Alpha Iota is proud to have a high number of
members who are already involved in this society. Members participate
in community service projects throughout the year, are eligible to apply
for exclusive scholarships, and continue to encourage academic
commitment within the Greek community.
Colleen Hill and Mia Varner
Alpha Iota is also excited to be represented on the Panhellenic
Executive Board, with one of our own girls selected this year. After considering several applications from
all houses, Mia Varner was chosen to be VP Programming. Colleen Hill
currently serves as our Panhellenic Delegate, serving as the liaison
between Panhellenic initiatives and the Chapter.
Recently, Kappa Deltas have received significant recognition on
campus for being outstanding Bruins. Luz Kumpel ran for Undergraduate
Student Association Council President and Sharon Wu for Facilities
Commissioner. Having two Kappa Delta’s run for one of the thirteen
prestigious and coveted spots on Student government was simply amazing!

12. Housing Improvements
As of this fall quarter, Alpha Iota received several upgrades to the house over the
summer.
The flooring on the first floor has been completely redone to replace the carpet
with wood and tile flooring. The living room, parlor, and outdoor patio were also
refurnished for the new school year.
The basement has undergone multiple changes
throughout the last year. The former chapter room
has been turned into a fully
equipped study lounge with new
desks and comfy office chairs. It
has been a very popular place for
girls to study, even live‐outs.
Winter quarter brought the much anticipated cardio room to
the house. Because of its popularity, a sign up system even had to be
created. We are unique in the fact that we are the only house on the
row to have anything similar to the cardio room.
We have input a new security system
into the house to ensure the safety of the girls
living in. Rather then have a keypad with a
code, we now have a fingerprint recognizable
system. We have a record number of girls
who want to live in next year due to all of the
upgrades that have been made, and look forward to any possible
new updates that will be happening to the house.
13. Social
Alpha Iota experienced possibly its greatest fall and winter quarter yet due to the
exceptional quality, variety, and amount of events that took place. The social calendar
ranged extensively from creatively themed raids to murder mystery dinners to classic
formals. Raids such as “Guys and Dolls,” “Wild, Wild
West” and “Old Hollywood,” casual dinners with fraternities,
laser tag, crush parties, and much more filled Alpha Iota’s
calendar during the fall, winter, and spring quarters.
During fall quarter we held our annual Presents ceremony
with a formal to follow. Each year we present our newest
members of Spring and Fall Recruitment to parents, family,
alumnae, fellow collegiate members, and friends. Each new
member gets introduced to everyone by an active member
such as their “big sis” that has become close to them and can
Jillian Tuso and Katherine Taylor pose share something unique or special about them. It is a great
at White Rose Formal way to welcome all our new members to their new family.
Afterwards we celebrated with a formal at a beautiful beachside hotel. One of our beloved
and actively involved seniors named Stephanie Doyle was crowned Miss Kappa Delta, a
longstanding tradition awarded to a member who has gone above and beyond the average
involvement as a member.
In winter, guys from every fraternity vied for our attention at our most anticipated event of
the year, the Daggerman Crush party. The KDs sought to find a fraternity member who best
represents the ideals of Kappa Delta. Each year, we invite fraternity men from every frat to
our Crush party. Afterwards, we select fifteen of the finest gentlemen to come to a Monday
night dinner and give a speech or performance to demonstrate why they are the best
representation of Kappa Delta ideals. Following that, we
narrow it down to ten candidates, who attend our White Rose
Formal and once again, give a speech or performance to win
over our hearts. This year’s performances ranged from poems
to dancing, and included unique displays of affection, such a
personalized lyrics to popular songs. Sergio Quilici, a leader
and active member of Pi Kappa Phi, was crowned Daggerman.
We have many more events planned for Spring Quarter, but
our most recent was a murder mystery dinner at Kappa Delta
with the boys from Delta Tau Delta fraternity. The night was
themed “Roaring 20’s” and began with a catered sit‐down
dinner and mocktails. Everyone looked like the “cat’s meow”
in their best zoot suits and flapper dresses. The evening was a
success, and Nicki Klein, our own social chair, turned out to
be the murderer! Thankfully, the LAPD kindly let Nicki off

14. Senior Farewell
Melisa Derenzi gave the following speech during our Fall Recruitment Preference
Ceremony. However, it was much more than a way of showing potential new members
a glimpse of our sisterhood. It was also a way of reflecting on her Kappa Delta
experience as a whole.
Three years ago, I would never have been able to stand up in front of all of you and make
this speech – especially to a group of girls as beautiful and intelligent as you all. I came in a scared
17‐year‐old ‐ the best I can say is that I could fake confidence if necessary. But after 4 days of
recruitment, that façade is worn terribly thin. It was on this day, with my guard down, that I met my
big sister, Marisa, and finally was able to make the decision to join Kappa Delta. Marisa, or as I more
lovingly call her, Gobbs, is confident, loyal, and a down right good time – she was everything I
wanted to be. With her guidance and support, I was easily integrated into the sisterhood I was
seeking to find at UCLA.
But as I soon realized, every girl in this house has some characteristic that I desire,
something that has helped me develop into a person that I am proud of. First, there is my twin,
Melissa, one of my first friends in the house. She taught me that, while I may never be the girl in the
hula skirt and coconut top at a raid, it is okay to be
outrageous and the center of attention
sometimes. And then there is madame president,
Annie Geffroy. I swear the day we walked into this
place, she was determined to be president. Over
the past three years, I have seen her put countless
hours, a few tears, and so much love into this
house. Doyle taught me that a well placed “that’s
what she said” is appropriate at any time.
Jen and Shasta, you girls are the best littles I could
ever ask for. I swear you both have ESP the way
you just know when I need a hug or a note of
encouragement. You are the sisters I never had in
my real family. And my puppy, Mallory, one of the
best listeners I know. She is my secret keeper and
Melissa Derenzi, back when she was VP
taught me that, sometimes, the best thing to say is New Member Education with Fall PC ‘08
nothing at all.
To my PC 08 babies – you girls mean the world to me. Your smiling faces got me through
one of the toughest quarters at UCLA for me. You embraced me, as well as the chapter, with open
minds and full hearts. The enthusiasm you showed for Kappa Delta reinvigorated my love for the
house. I was supposed to come up here and talk about my experience at Kappa Delta, but when I
thought about it, there was no way to for me to generically describe my four years here. Each girl in
this room has added to my experience and changed my life.
Which brings me to you girls. Today is the day you choose who will change your life, and whose life
you will change. I hope you make the same decision I did, but whatever you choose, I hope you
always strive for that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest in all walks of life. Carry that with
you always, and you will never be led astray.
