Trusted, Scalable Platform As demands increase, middle-office and back-office operations need to scale as efficiently as needed. Deliver trusted data assets High-scale complex event processing High-scale Data Warehouse
Enterprise-level Security and Scalability SITUATION TODAY SQL SERVER 2008 R2 Businesses need a data platform which keeps up with demands of their growing business Sensitive & valuable information needs to be highly-secured More demand for 24/7 availability Enhanced data compression improves performance and reduces storage requirements Transparent data encryption prevents access to secure data from unauthorized users 99.999% availability with online operations, DB mirroring and failover clustering in physical and virtualized environments Forrester named Microsoft a ‘leader’ in the DBMS Wave and states that Microsoft is “The most aggressive DBMS vendor with a strong road map.” In this Wave, Forrester categorizes Leaders as offering “broad set of functionality to support any critical transactional application.”
High Scale Data Warehouse SITUATION TODAY SQL SERVER 2008 R2 PARALLEL DATA WAREHOUSE Predictable scale-out through MPP on SQL Server and Windows Massive Scale with Low TCO – 10s to 100TB+ Integrated BI platform for small and very large Enterprises Data volumes are exploding Growing population of users accessing information Increasingly complex data analyses performed against data “Parallel Data Warehouse is a natural complement to SQL Server, so we are excited about the possibilities the DatAllegro acquisition will bring.” - Ron Van Zanten, Directing Officer of Business Intelligence, Premier Bankcard Inc
IT & Developer Efficiency Give IT the control they need while ensuring lines of business have the speed they desire. Visibility & Control Resource Optimization Administrative Efficiencies
Multi-Server Management TODAY TOMORROW Controlserver sprawl with 1 to many management – setup is fast and easy Manage capacity through policies – save time, optimize resources DAC Single unit of deployment – increase deployment and upgrade efficiency
“When you work in an environment where a single product requires up to 40 SQL Server instances for its full life cycle, the multi-server management features of SQL Server 2008 R2 become an invaluable tool – it’s almost like having an extra DBA.” - Michael Steineke, Vice President of Information Technology – Edgenet – Big Hammer Visibility and Control SITUATION TODAY APPLICATION AND MULTI-SERVER MANAGEMENT DBAs managing a growing number of SQL Server applications Dozens to hundreds of instances are unmonitored or underutilized Need better insights into capacity & utilization to proactively address potential issues Centrally manage groups of instances from a single console Define policies based on desired utilization thresholds Gain insights into utilization & policy violations
Optimize Resources SITUATION TODAY SQL SERVER 2008 R2 & WINDOWS SERVER 2008 R2 CONSOLIDATION Consolidation through virtualization of servers and applications Hyper-Vℱ Live Migration increase availability Minimal performance overhead for most virtualized workloads Need to reduce or eliminate server sprawl Need to reduce costs & complexity Demand for 24x7 access with little or no downtime for maintenance With virtualization, we will save about 50 percent of our annual energy budget for cooling and electricity. Virtualization saves us on hardware and labor. We also save on software licensing fees. And we can save money by creating and managing virtual test environments for some applications with our development group. - LukOil Oil Company

Master Data Management Microsoft SQL Server MDS
Trusted Data Assets SITUATION TODAY SQL SERVER 2008 R2 MASTER DATA SERVICES Increased emphasis on regulatory compliance and SOA High quality master data is key for effective business processes IT challenged with creating, maintaining and delivering trusted versions of master data & relationships Enterprise ready for complex, mission-critical applications Deliver single, trusted versions of critical data assets & their relationships Deliver trusted master data to downstream data warehouse, analytics & BI systems in consumable formats
Master Data Management MERGE ROLE SECURITY VERSIONING HIERARCHY MGMT WORKFLOW APPROVAL CRM Purchasing DB HR Doc ERP Asset Mgmt
MDS in Customer Marketing Improves Response / Reduces Costs 24% Duplication rate +	13% wrong address x	marketing campaigns per year x	$0.50 Cost per customer =	$1.2 MM Total annual marketing “waste” CUSTOMER EXAMPLE 1.4 million prospects not reached x	1% response rate =	14,000 potential new customers missed x	$983 lifetime revenue per customer =	$14 MM Total potential revenue missed CUSTOMER EXAMPLE 30% item data error rate in retail files x	25 minutes of manual cleansing per SKU per year =	$60-$80 cost per error +	60% error rate for all invoices generated =	$40-$400 per invoice to reconcile errors =	3-5% of total revenue PRODUCT EXAMPLE
Maintain Master Data MDS provides a UI where a data steward can create new master data records and update existing ones. Hierarchies are maintained with drag and drop editing. Every transaction is logged, business rules are enforced and data is easily searched and filtered.
Manage Data with Versions MDS enables data stewards to establish multiple versions of data to aid in compliance and the ability to understand the state of master data at a point in time. In this scenario Version 4 is open for editing, it has not been validated and it doesn’t have any flag associated with it. We can also see that version 4 was based on Version 2 (not Version 3) and that Version 2 was based on Version 1.
Defining Hierarchies The data steward can quickly define as many hierarchy relationships as necessary and see the resulting organization of the data.

Complex Event Processing Microsoft SteamInsight
Complex Event Processing SITUATION TODAY SQL SERVER 2008 R2 STREAMINSIGHT Pressure to handle large volumes of complex data in real time The size and frequency of data make it challenging to store for data mining and analysis Growing need to monitor, analyze and act on the data in motion Process large volumes of events across multiple data streams in less than a second Manage your business through historical data mining and continuous insights Built-in support for different types of event handling and rich query semantics "Intelligence isn't just about knowing what is happening. It's about looking at the patterns in real time. If business people want to truly optimize their resources, they must examine patterns in real time.” - Mike Gualtieri - Forrester

 1. As we engage with customers, customers explain the pressures to deliver more real-time information through rich applications while also reducing costs in this new economy. The converging IT trends of virtually free storage space, the rapid adoption of virtualization and the increasing capabilities of industry standard hardware, the emergence of the Cloud as a deployment option, and the need for real-time business information for all employees through easy to use tools are driving the data explosion we see today. Customers need a complete approach to managing, accessing and delivering information across your organization to accelerate and improve business decisions. Over the past 5 years, we have been delivering on a vision to build a data platform for our customers. It has been a transformational time for SQL Server and we have delivered innovation to help our customers adapt to the explosion of data in their organizations. We approached this in terms of delivering a platform that supports all types of data – structured and unstructured – as well as all tiers – from the edge, to the datacenter and then to the cloud. We also delivered robust capabilities to enable you to build access to this data through rich applications and to manage this data with easy to use tools and interfaces, as well as new services to provide business intelligence. We made progress in each of these areas, as well as continued to strengthen the foundation to deliver the security, performance, and availability needed for businesses and applications of all sizes. This vision continues to guide us, but we recognize that it needs to continue to evolve. One key evolution in our vision is moving from talking about data to talking about information. This reflects the shift that you want a platform that not only stores and manages all your data, but helps you deliver greater value from your data across your business in the applications you use every day. Organizations are looking to compete and grow by reducing costs, reducing time to market and identifying the highest value opportunities for their business. We’re moving forward rapidly to address these challenges with new capabilities in manageability, business intelligence and data warehousing and by delivering the first relational database cloud offering with Microsoft SQL Azure. Another important shift is to showcase people at the center of this vision, the users of SQL Server and those who we look to deliver greater value with each release –IT and Database professionals who support the expanding information needs of the business through IT services;Developers who build solutions quickly to capture business opportunities in an increasingly competitive market;BI practitioners and end users who are looking to quickly mine volumes of data for business insights to increase customer satisfaction and drive business results. These are the people for which we innovate and look to delight with SQL Server. Microsoft, along with our worldwide partners, is committed to deliver an Information Platform which enables your people and provides you with a complete set of enterprise-ready technologies and tools to help you realize more value from your information at the lowest total cost of ownership. The vision comes together as 4 pillars. MISSION CRITICALOur vision starts with the foundation of a Mission-Critical Platform. You run your business on the solutions you build around SQL Server and Windows Server; it needs to perform to the highest levels ensuring your applications and systems are reliable, highly available, secure and deliver superior predictable performance with the industry’s best TCO. The data center is one of the areas in which we will continue to invest in going forward. (Side note: Mission-critical was a key area of focus for 2008 – in security with Transparent Data Encryption and Advanced Auditing, for availability with enhancements to Database Mirroring and Peer-to-Peer replication, as well as Online Operations and for driving faster, predictable performance with Resource Governor and industry leading benchmarks for OLTP, ETL and 10 TB DW.) As we look forward, we continue to drive investments in the Mission Critical platform to support scalability – scale up with Windows Server and support of greater than 64 logical processors with proven benchmarks for superior performance and scale out with the new Parallel Data Warehouse edition (formerly known as Project Madison). We will also offer greater value and capability with the new Data Center Edition providing unlimited virtualization and support for Hyper-V Live Migration, high-scale multi-server management and high-scale complex event processing through SQL Server StreamInsight. EMPOWERED ITBy helping IT Professionals and Database Professionals automate routine tasks they can now focus more time on adding business value. The boundaries of the IT environment continue to be stretched and IT Professionals have increased responsibility to manage application requirements for the datacenter, across mobile devices and the desktop, and now out in the cloud. We know that a majority of today’s annual IT spending is focused on just running the business. We want to help IT automate those routine tasks and spend more time driving more value back into the business through IT projects. (Side note: With SS2008, we delivered on Policy-based Management and Performance Data Collector key investments that we are now leveraging for the R2 with the delivery of Application and Multi-server Management.) Giving IT professionals greater visibility and control of their IT environments and the ability to work more efficiently is a key area we will invest in for R2 withApplication and Multi-Server Management, and in future releases. DYNAMIC DEVELOPMENTThe focus on developers is to helping them be productive to drive down the time to solution and increase the richness of those solutions. With Visual Studio, the .NET Framework, and SQL Server, developers have a highly productive platform to deliver data through their applications. The Entity Framework and Entity Data Model are key investments we’ve made to bridge the gap between the object and relational world; we are committed to evolving these investments for developers. (Side note: With SS2008, we delivered capabilities to support additional data types to provide developers with increasing opportunities to bring the relational model to new forms of data with support for spatial data and FILESTREAM capabilities) Looking ahead, we think about the ability for them to leverage their skills and platform investment to write apps that take advantage of new capabilities with the cloud and bring the relational model to low-latency streaming data with SQL Server StreamInsight. PERVASIVE INSIGHTBusiness Intelligence continues to be the #1 priority for CIOs. Even as budgets are cut, IT is being asked to do more to deliver information to the business. Getting the right information to the right person at the right time is critical for success now more than ever. We continue to deliver on our vision for “Pervasive Insight” by re-defining who the average BI user is. Our deep integration with Microsoft Office empowers end users to build and consume BI solutions through familiar tools such as SharePoint and Excel. (Side note: With SS2008, we delivered on the need for scale for DW, Reporting and Analysis, as well as delivered on the end user experience with the first version of Report Builder.) With R2, we are delivering managed self-service BI, the ability to share and collaborate on rich analyses among end users using Excel and SharePoint in an IT managed environment, via PowerPivot for Excel and PowerPivot for SharePoint, and the ability to drive data consistency across your business with Master Data Services. CLOUDWith the emergence of Cloud, we look to how we deliver on the pillars of the Information Platform Vision both on-premises and off-premises – Empowering IT by delivering on business-ready SLAs and streamlining maintenance, delivering on Dynamic Development by leveraging the same knowledge, skills and familiar tools and delivering more Pervasive Insight by connecting applications and data in the Cloud with on-premises sources – all powered by a proven Mission Critical Platform. The information platform vision is powered by SQL Server and now by SQL Azure, and supported by integration with the Microsoft ecosystem to deliver an end-to-end information platform for businesses and applications of all sizes.
 2. Slide Objective: Use trends that we have observed from our recent customer research as motivation for the areas of investment to be presented.Slide Script:In the Fall of 2007 about 100 members of the SQL Server development team travelled around the US and Europe to visit with more than 40 enterprise customers and more than 30 other groups of customers to refresh our understanding of customer challenges through direct conversation. The key challenges were broken down into 3 main categoriesEnd User Empowerment: This is essentially about enabling end users to do more with less dependency on their IT departments. IT was cited by end users as being a major bottleneck to reporting and analysis projects and from an IT perspective, they simply could not keep up with every changing end user demands. Providing end users with intuitive tools that enable them to build their own reports and models for analysis was a major challenge for IT.Business Application Insight: Access to business information is almost always in the context of an existing business application. E.g. I want to understand what my sales were by geography for the past 4 quarters (this is in the context of the sales tracking application), or I want to understand how many customers bought a certain set of products within a certain window of time (this is in the context of a CRM application). While several business applications provide some ‘canned’ reports to view this type of information, for the majority of scenarios, it is IT that has to build customized solutions to solve the business requirements.Data Scale Quality & Compliance: Data volumes especially for decision support systems are growing exponentially and the ability for the hardware and software to support this growth is essential. In addition as we continue to see a proliferation of data the sources from which this data comes from also become more heterogeneous and the validity of the data being used comes into question. Finally as information becomes more readily available to the rank and file of organizations, the ability to apply authorization rules and automate access also becomes critical.Transition: Our future investments focus on each of these challenges at various levels. Lets start by talking about the innovations we’re delivering to our customers over the next six months

 3. The purpose of this slide is to communicate the next wave of SQL innovation and how it should be messaged. There are three key areas of innovation: SQL Server 2008 R2 – the next generation release of the SQL Server database platform, Parallel Data Warehouse, appliances for high scale data warehousing and SQL Azure – scalable relational database platform service in the cloud. When you talk to each of these innovations, you want to emphasize that each is built on the solid foundation of SQL Server 2008.SQL Server 2008 R2 enables businesses to make more timely, better informed decisions by enabling users to access, integrate, analyze and share information using tools they are already familiar with – Microsoft Office; DBAs can more efficiently manage databases and applications at scale with multi-server management; delivers enhanced support for Virtualization and Hyper-V Live Migration to further optimize resources through consolidation.SQL Azure – delivers on the Microsoft Data Platform vision of extending the SQL Server capabilities to the cloud as web-based services. SQL Azure provides an internet-facing database and advanced query processing services and is ideal solution for customers building new applications or integrating with existing investments in the cloud. Built on SQL Server technologies, SQL Azure provides the same enterprise-class availability, scalability , and security with the benefits of built-in data protection, self healing and disaster recovery as well as a consistent SQL Server programming model & tools. Parallel Data Warehouse is a highly scalable data warehouse appliance. It uses Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) to deliver high performance and scalability on SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 and industry-standard hardware. Parallel Data Warehouse is a separate release/edition but will launch jointly with R2 in the first half of 2010.
 4. Investments in application and multi-server management will help organizations proactively manage database environments efficiently at scale through centralized visibility into resource utilization and help streamline consolidation and upgrade initiatives across the application lifecycle—all with tools that make it fast and easy.Today DBAs manage a growing number of SQL Server instances individually. With SQL Server 2008 R2, we are enabling an increase in the ratio of DBAs to databases for management at scale. Our new tools allow DBAs to set up a multi-server environment in minutes and enroll their sprawling instances into a SQL Server Control Point.<click to animate>Today with disparate instances and no central management DBAs have hundreds to thousands of underutilized instances running small departmental apps, all requiring equal maintenance for compliance and versioning control. With SQL Server 2008 R2, enrollment into the SQL Server Control Point removes the need to manually assess the capacity of each instance through central capacity policies. At-a-glance viewpoints provide insight into resources and data-tier application utilization helping you maximize your existing resources and choose consolidation candidates at a huge time savings.<click to animate> Today, preparing for upgrades and deployments means a lot of time spent locating the many disparate objects associated with a single deployed application (tables, runtimes, stored procedures) or preparing the many objects related to a database application deployment, without knowing if there are specific deployment requirements. Moving existing data-tier applications and deploying new ones is a very time consuming process littered with trial and error. With R2, we introduce a new concept to the market, a single unit of deployment. A new single unit of deployment will significantly increase the efficiencies around data-tier application deployments and upgrades resulting in dramatically streamlined consolidation and management efforts.

 6. Purpose of the slideHere is the solution, show some detail on how we think of the BI architecture in 3 main layers. Point out that self-service analysis takes place in Office and SharePoint, but the Business Intelligence Platform is there to take popular user-generated solutions and convert them into full organizational solutions.Key Points: A trusted BI platform is critical for a business intelligence solution to work today. If we’re going to achieve the promise of BI, we need to have the confidence and trust in the data, we need to know where it came from, and that it is both timely and reliable for us to use to make a decision. That’s where the power of an integrated BI platform like SQL Server comes into play.Once you have the data ready to use, the middle tier comes into play, where business users actually interact with the data and turn it into something that is useful to them to make the right decision. The numbers that we pull from other systems are just that—we need applications and content to turn them into actionable items—and that’s where the middle tier comes into play. Finally, we need the right tools and applications to ensure that we can use that data in the way we want to in order to make our decisions. Applications and tools that range from personal, to team, to organizational and corporate tools, all with a familiar look and feel, all integrated and working with my Operating system, email, Internet search function. And this is what the power of integration through Microsoft Office brings you. From the Office productivity tools like Excel, through to the team and collaboration tools of SharePoint. By integrating BI seamlessly into a broader business productivity suite that includes search, collaboration, unified communications, and content management, we offer the end user a much richer experience. Conclusion: Our better together (Microsoft BI) story is real!

This slide describes four common customer scenarios that SADB supportsDepartmental ApplicationsSimple application built by individual or departmentNeed simple deployment, self-management, IT: “Empowerment and Governance”Web applicationsSmall business or startup that uses the cloud as their ITSimple deployment, self-management, scale on demandISVISV hosting software on behalf of customerMulti-tenant support for billing and isolationData hub (shortly after V1)Sharing and aggregating of data across tiers and across enterprisesCentralized place for data, high scale, sync with existing data sourcesDepartmental workgroup applicationsBuilt with SQL Express or AccessSmall in size, 5 GB or lessLess than 10,000 rowsSmall number of concurrent users (tens)Owned by a department, not central IT.Often grows out an excel spreadsheet or Access databaseTypically one of the following types:Tracking app (purchase orders changes)Simple reporting app (CSS tool for tracking issues)Commonly pulls reference data from other systems.Simple security needs (a set of people all get read access, with a small number of people with Admin access)Do not have a dedicated DBA (usually managed by a department level IT helper or a technically savvy IW)Developer often a technically savvy IW. Especially for the Access apps.Web applicationsTypically built by a small development team with no little or administrative capabilitiesNeed to start small, but then be able to scale-up quickly and easily as required.Data HubsSecure data hubs enable you to consolidate existing data store investments and access them through a single cloud-based hub. The security features provided by the SADB platform ensure movement of, and access to your data is secure at all times. This enables you to develop or modify applications to provide geo-dispersed data access and enables the complete mobility of your workforce. You can be certain that if your employees have access to the internet they have access to their data!ISVs and SaaS ProvidersGrowing trend towards cloud-based LOB application offerings.Need global reach and scalability with the ability to quickly provision multiple tenants and manage billing
 13. Easy, low-cost provisioning Wizard-based provisioning: A guided step by step process that is as simple as provisioning an email address with Hotmail Pay as you grow model: Platform costs only increase as your data and transactions scale out Simple deployment: Utilise the same skills and tools your developers already have . New features such as Synthesis help to make the deployment process even simplerWith relational databases now being hosted on Windows Azure, they benefit from the self management features offered by the platform. These include the ability to become self healing, be automatically backed up and restored when needed and have high availability through the many geo-dispersed data copies located around the world. The costs and time of this self management is automatically passed on to you as our datacenters carry out the work for you. When it comes to database management, something that cannot always be done by a self management procedure, the same tools that developers and database administrators already use can be used to connect to and administrate a cloud based database. These tools include SQL Server Management Studio and Profiler.
