Environmentally Friendly Photocopiers and Office Equipment
Environmentally Friendly photocopiers and other office equipment are crucial to workplace
energy-saving and waste-reduction. Many measures (procedural and technical) have been
implemented by equipment manufacturers, dealers and distributors - even before the
government's introduction of measures via legislation such as the WEEE directive.
Additionally, all government departments and private enterprise organisations have
become acutely aware in recent years of the need for the implementation of energy-
efficiency measures - not least to address bottom-line profitability as well as the wider
responsibility to reduce climate change.

Environmental Issues: Recycling
Office equipment including photocopiers which previously ended up on landfill sites are no
longer able to do so under the WEEE directive. The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment) directive affects those involved in the manufacture, selling and distribution,
recycling or treating of any electronic equipment. Included in the range of items affected
are household appliances, Information Technology and Telecommunications Equipment,
audio visual and lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, surgical and hospital
equipment and automatic dispensers and of course, office equipment including
photocopiers.
The aim of the WEEE directive is to reduce the waste generated from electrical and
electronic equipment. The directive is also designed to ensure an improvement in the
environmental procedures of all those involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic
products. Manufacturers, sellers and distributors of office equipment are responsible for
taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment. They are also required to
achieve a series of rigorous recycling and recovery targets for different categories of
appliance. Responsibilities can be discharged in a number of ways, including financial
contributions.

Environmental Issues: Energy Efficiency and Fossil Fuel
    Consumption
Apart from computers and associated print devices, photocopiers are without doubt the
most common items of office equipment in use today. Due to the need to be used "on
demand", they can incur a significant environmental cost in terms of energy and paper
usage and consequent greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Efficiency with Power Management
Power management features are important for saving energy and an easy way to reduce
air pollution. Energy efficient photocopiers provide a significant step towards reducing the
environmental impact of office photocopiers. Such machines come provided with an
“energy saving" mode so that when not in use they "power down". This feature alone can
reduce the energy needed to support the machine in periods of low activity by up to 60%
or even more.
Energy Efficiency with Technical Innovation
A major energy-saving feature of the latest Canon photocopiers is the Canon "On-
Demand" fusing system. The latest Canons use a thin fixing film, rather than a thick
heating roller. They also use an efficient ceramic heating element, rather than a halogen
heater. With these twin innovations, Canon achieves greatly improved energy efficiency
and lower heat requirements. Heat is applied only when paper is passed through the fixing
mechanism and images are "fixed" via the fixing film. In addition to this, Canon’s
technology can allow the photocopier to make the transition between a cool energy-saving
"sleep mode" to full operating temperatures in less than 10 seconds. This is a major
advantage over conventional systems, which typically take more than one minute.
A similarly innovative system is also available on the latest Konica Minolta bizbub series,
including the bizhub C451. The induction heating fusing technology on the bizhub C451 is
also one which minimises energy consumption and maximises energy efficiency, by fusing
at a lower temperature.

For More Information on Energy Saving Office Equipment
Such technology is paving the way to increased energy efficiency - especially when
coupled with an increase in the availability of "duplex" (paper-saving double-sided copying
and printing) as standard, and the adoption of office disciplines in the curtailing of
unnecessary paper creation via electronic Document Management Systems designed to
operate with digital photocopiers.

Toshiba's Eco-Friendly Office Copier Prints Erasable Documents

A new copy machine by Toshiba hopes to be the next big thing for paper-conscious offices. It prints
documents that can be erased instantly by heating the pages, and the paper can be used up to five
times before needing to be recycled. The toner is heat-sensitive, and loses colour when warmed up.
But what happens if you leave your important documents in the hot car? According to CrunchGear,
the printer with its erasable paper can result in a "60% cut in carbon dioxide emissions, when
compared with using four sheets of paper. The copier can make 20 to 30 copies a minute and will
cost about 20-30% more than conventional copiers with a similar performance, according to a
report in The Nikkei (Japan's biggest business daily)." The company hopes to commercialise the
copy machines sometime during the next fiscal year.
It reminds us a little of a giant version of the PrePeat.
The idea is very intriguing -- at least at first. After all, isn't it perfect that an office could reuse paper
up to five times? While it sounds like a great way to curb the consumption of paper by offices, there
are a few issues that shake the "green" label for the machine. For instance, at what rate will paper
get heated and reused, rather than saved (since the purpose of a copy machine is to have hard copies
of a document on hand), and does the energy that goes into heating the paper eat into any carbon
savings by minimising paper use? And what chemicals are used in heat-sensitive ink -- it might be
far less green than using soy-based inks.
We aren't convinced that this is necessarily a green solution all around, and it underscores the fact
that the greenest thing to do with copiers is just not use them. Avoiding printing in the first place is
more practical than investing in this new machine.

Big Steps with a smaller Footprint

Toshiba proudly introduces its greenest MFD ever
Toshiba’s commitment to Corporate Social
Responsibility encourages major efforts to
reduce the impact of our activities on the
environment. Promoting good environmental
management practices across all of our
products and business processes, the new e-
STUDIO255/305/355/455 MFDs can boast the
following environmentally friendly
enhancements.
The new e-STUDIO255/305/355/455 Multi-
Function Device (MFD) efficiently outputs
crisp monochrome images at speeds of 25
ppm to 45 ppm. Scanning in colour it
empowers use of digital document storage
and retrieval for considerate paper usage and
improved work flow. Together with the
following innovations, we can all comfortably
contribute to environmental improvement
activities.
ENERGY SAVING
Utilising Toshiba’s latest SOC (System on Chip) technology feature “Super Sleep Mode” the
MFD consumes only 1W of power whilst in standby, in this mode it will be automatically
woken for FAX and LAN activities.
WASTE TONER RECYCLING SYSTEM
100% of all waste toner is used for imaging resulting in a system that conserves
resources, reduces cost and is kinder to the environment.
PAPER/TONER SAVING
Hold Print – this feature holds jobs at the MFD ready to output at the user’s convenience
eliminating loss and wastage of documents.
Omit Blank Page - removes blank sheets from documents saving on unnecessary wasted
paper. Auto Duplex – this mode can be set as default cutting paper usage by 50%.
N in 1 – documents can be thumb nailed for archiving (up to 32 pages) onto a single
sheet with substantial savings in paper and toner usage.
Proof Print – eliminates wasted output by allowing the user to preview just one
completed set at the MFD before committing to the rest of the job.
Outside Erase – eliminates black background when copying or scanning books or other
3D objects, the resultant images are not only cleaner but result in a reduction of toner
usage.
Toner Save Mode – lets users print their documents in a legible output whilst saving
toner, perfect for drafts.
LONG LIFE CONSUMABLES
Consumables are designed to last longer, reducing the frequency of periodic maintenance.
COMPLIANCE – DESIGN TO DISPOSAL
Using the “concept to grave” design model, the e-STUDIO 255/305 and 355/455 are
designed to fully comply with the world’s most stringent standards such as Energy Star
Tier2, Blue Angel Mark and R Ohs requirements of the European Union.
HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES REDUCTION
Products are lead free, Vinyl chloride-free, and Halogen-free.
LIGHTER/MORE COMPACT
the new lighter and more compact design means more efficient shipping and as a direct
result a reduction of CO² emissions. Compared to predecessor, size has been reduced by
up to 33%, weight by up to 31% and the number of parts by up to 30%.
RECYCLED MATERIAL
these new MFDs utilise packaging manufactured from recycled materials which can be
returned for further recycling. In fact, over 14% of each new MFD is manufactured from
recycled materials and the whole device is 100% totally recyclable.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Toshiba contributes to sustainable development in two ways: by supporting
environmentally friendly values and by reducing the environmental impact of its products
and business practices. Toshiba strives to be eco-friendly in all activities including
procurement of raw materials and components, product design, production, and
distribution. In line with this policy, Toshiba’s environmentally friendly MFDs feature
recycled materials and are highly efficient with energy and other resources.

Photocopying is comparatively more Eco friendly then printing, the reason being it involved
less consumption of ink. But a lot it depends on need and requirement of the user. If there is
an option to use either one of them then in that case photocopying is best one to go for.

Success Stories
NASA's Environmental Approach to Copiers

NASA's unique "cost-per-copy" agency-wide contract, which means the agency purchases
copy services rather than machines, allowed the inclusion of several environmental
features important to NASA, including recycled paper and energy-efficiency. As a result,
the agency estimates it will save approximately $4.5 million during the 5-year span of the
contract. In a cost-per-copy contract environment, the contractor provides convenient
copiers, all supplies including toner (which previously was a separate, high-cost item for
all NASA sites), preventive maintenance, repairs and repair parts, training, moves, and
associated labour costs. These convenience copiers were viewed as an easy item to
consolidate into one agency wide contract that could yield considerable savings.
Consolidating NASA's copier needs into one contract significantly reduced administrative
costs associated with contracts being competed, awarded, administered, and closed out.

Greener Printing

Environment

Eco copiers can look at your current impact on the environment and provide practical
solutions to help you be more Eco friendly. This doesn’t need to cost the Earth, as we can
look to do this without increasing your current monthly costs. All the products we supply
are specially selected to be the most environmentally (Eco) friendly in its sector.
• Each year some 500 million empty or used cartridges end up going to landfill.

    • A cartridge in landfill will take over 1000 years to biodegrade.

    • To manufacture an original toner cartridge will have taken some 3.5 litres of oil.

The downsides of printing and modern technology when you read the headline facts are
frightening. The “paperless” office where we all read electronic documents and do not
print has never materialised and is never likely to. Most users still prefer to read printed
documents than electronic.

Given that we all print and all use toner and ink jet cartridges, the least we can do is to
dispose of them in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

Here are some suggestions to help your office make an immediate impact:

    1. Cut paper use. Print on both sides of the page "duplexing." Print multiple images
per page and print only the quantity you need at the time you need it. Saving paper
also saves energy: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that it
takes 10 times more energy to manufacture a piece of paper than to create another
       print or copy.

    2. Reach for the right paper, and recycle the paper you use. Use environmentally
preferable paper - like High Yield Business Paper that is produced using half of the
number of trees of conventional paper. Print on paper certified to sustainable
forestry standards from global organisations such as the Forest Stewardship Council
and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or use paper with
recycled content. Install bins in several office locations to make it easy to collect
paper for recycling or for reuse as notepaper.

    3. Reach for the ENERGY STAR®. Upgrade old products with new, more efficient
systems and the savings add up. For example some new machines can use about
30 percent less than a comparable multifunction system of two years ago.

    4. Replace copiers or printers with products that do-it-all. An office copier, four laser
printers and a fax machine can consume 1400 kWh of energy each year. But if one
multifunction system can handle your document needs, it uses only 700 kWh
annually. Eco Copiers Sustainability Calculator can help pinpoint opportunities to
reduce the overall environmental footprint of your office equipment.

    5. Don't throw away empty toner cartridges. Send them back to us for reuse and
       recycling.
6. Seek office equipment designed for re-manufacturing or recycling. Eco Copiers
devices are designed with recycling and reuse in mind. Recycling and re-
manufacturing programs have diverted more than 2 billion pounds of waste from
       landfills since 1991.

    7. Use software to simplify the way you use documents. Cut back the time and energy
spent on manual paper-based processes with work flow management systems and
collaboration tools. For paper-intensive processes like legal discovery or mortgage
loan document management, Docushare combined with scan-enabled multifunction
devices can help reduce errors and improve version control – and ultimately
eliminate the costs of producing, storing and shipping paper documents.

Green

Eco Copiers is now collecting empty cartridges in the UK. Eco Copiers Ltd realises that it
has to lead by example.

Good ethics

Not to send any cartridges or mobile phones to landfill, having a positive impact on the
environment.

We can all make a difference to future generations - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

New Eco Printer released by Star Micronics

This article appeared in the Earth Times on 15th March 2010 announcing the release by
Star Micronics of the TSP100ECO.
This is a comment from a Star spokesperson:
“The TSP100ECO™ is a direct response to worldwide demand to reduce carbon emissions
and retailers’ responsibility to reduce energy consumption enabling them to save money
and contribute to the battle against global warming,” stated Christophe Naasz, Marketing
Director for Star Micronics. Naasz further commented, “Combining futurePRNT’s unique
software advantages with a reduction in power and paper consumption will enable users to
not only save the environment and operating expenses, but also satisfy low-power
consumption requirements for Energy Star.”
Read more: http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/eco-friendly-pos-printing-
solution-announced-by-star-micronics,1205481.shtml#ixzz0j8NJSz0G
Wow, 40% energy savings is awesome and the way I understand it, the TSP100ECO also
uses significantly less amounts of paper through some clever method of making the paper
narrower and reducing the amount of blank spaces on the receipt. Details on their paper
management are coming but the power saving system they use alone makes it a fantastic
option in reducing the impact on the environment.
Looks like a truly green printer is here.

Green retailing, Greentailing and Eco Printing

Its coming sooner than you think – environmentally friendly retailers, eco-friendly
retailing, and green retailing - under whatever label, it will mean substantially more than
simply choosing paper bags, nevertheless the perceived expense seems to possibly be
holding a number of retailers back.
On the other hand “going green” will probably not end up being as time-consuming or
even as costly as everyone believes. Merchants that believe heading eco-friendly will be
simply one more fad or perhaps advertising attention-grabber ought to reconsider their
position.
When consumers develop an increasing consciousness regarding a retailer’s entire impact
regarding the environment, these same retailers might be prudent to ensure that they
compare favourably to any yardsticks that are instituted by green watchdogs. The reality
is that green retailing (or simply ‘green-tailing’) is definitely here to stay.
With the ongoing perils and concerns associated with global warming, in addition to
escalating concern regarding the impact retail businesses generate regarding the natural
world, the realities of green-tailing and being measured as eco-friendly will start to hit
home.
Retailers who take note now and begin the processes required to become eco-friendly now
have an advantage over those that start late. There will be a marketing advantage for
sure, as well as the financial advantage of being able to spread any costs of going green
over a longer period rather than being hit with large costs of conversion all at once.
Eco Printers are one such area where the cost of conversion is minimal yet the savings in
terms of printer power consumption and paper usage can be quite dramatic.

Wave Energy: A new energy to power Australian homes in 2017

Power Buoy®; Credit: © Ocean Power Technologies
“This looks like a good idea Sarah, I wonder if the energy prices will be cheaper
and will it have any effect on the fish, or other marine life and how will this
                                 affect our ecosystem?”
As the Curiosity rover lands on Mars, the conquest of Renewable Marine Energy follows
the same process: in small measured steps. This important 19 MW project is the next step
in the on-going relationship between American wave power technology designer Ocean
Power Technologies and Lockheed Martin, one of the world's space specialists.
With the most advanced technology in the country best renowned for waves in the world,
the wave energy farm could supply close to 100 MW in the long term.
This team will be responsible of the first wave energy farm in Australia. Installed along the
coast of Victoria (Portland), 362 km south West of Melbourne, this 19 MW farm will
produce 75000 MWh/year (with a reproducibility factor of 50%) and supply electricity to
14,000 Australian homes. This project will reduce levels of CO2 by 37,000 tons/year and
allow Australia to save $851,000 AUD/year of carbon taxes (based on $23 AUD/ton of
CO2). The work is scheduled to start in 2013 and will be completed in 2017.
For the last 15 years, OPT has been the pioneer in conception, prototype creation and the
connection of these systems to the electric grid. The American company, founded by
George W. Taylor (Australian) and Dr Joseph R. Burn, work with the wave energy
converter called "Power Buoy". Fixed on the sea bed, the technology follows the back and
forth wave movement to harness and convert mechanical energy to electricity. These
systems are certified by "Lloyd's Register" meaning they can function in big waves that
measure up to 28 meters (80-90 feet). However, even with this safety margin, the ocean
continues to surprise us. There are two models with a life span of 25 years: "Power buoy
150kW" and "Power buoy 500kW".
In 2004, the US Navy was in search of a new autonomous system to generate electricity.
From this announcement the relationship between OPT and Lockheed Martin was born.
The first prototype was installed along the coast of New Jersey in 2005. The program
ended successfully in 2008 leading to the development and installation of a more powerful
system: 40 kW connected to a grid in Hawaii, followed by a 150 kW system in Scotland
and currently, a 500 kW buoy in development. Lockheed Martin contributes its specialist
knowledge in the design, production, integration systems, and project management of the
Power Buoy technology. Lockheed Martin also represents financial security for investors
and boosts funding research for the Australian project. OPT shares increased by 72 cents
after the news of this partnership.
The Australian government contributed $67 million AUD of the $225 million AUD budget
for this project and will participate through local industry players to the farm's production,
roll-out and maintenance. For its operation in territorial Australian seas, Australian
company Victoria Wave Partner Pty Ltd (currently held by OPT) will own, manage, and be
responsible for its development. Currently, its mission is to evaluate potential funding as
well as develop important partnerships with local industry and public services regarding
electricity repurchasing and sales. Eventually, energy will be sold to electricity suppliers
which power commercial and residential buildings. The economic aspect of this energy is
still to be researched before we know its impact on costs. An article written by Gilles
Parkinston states that wave energy could remain under 100$/Mwh by 2020.
New American high-technology on Australian soil will bring attention from the local players
who also strive to be leaders in the field. The government continues to promoting the
nation's intellectual property by financially participating in the development of smaller
projects and prototypes like the 2MW Carnegie project in Western Australia and various
other projects by Ocean Linx and BioPower System etc... The funding for these, however,
remains modest and proportional to their profitability. As Australia is looking to establish
its renewable energy industry within an already competitive international context, the
Australian government still chooses a significant investment in an American technology
that is more advanced.

                                    Why Go Green?

The Environmental Printing Company firmly believes that you, the planet, and your
business can benefit from printing green.
Here are just some of the reasons why:

You Help Save Trees
The average office worker uses 0.68 kilograms of paper per day, that’s 170 kilograms per
year! You can make a HUGE difference just by changing the type of paper you use.
By switching to recycled or sugar cane paper, your business could save hundreds, maybe
even thousands of trees.

You Help Reduce Toxic Waste
The paper making process is a toxic one, and it produces a lot of waste. A medium-sized
print shop uses about 20 tons of paper each month, which produces:
    • 554 kilograms of water-borne waste
    • 680,741 litres of waste water

What Is ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) helping us all save money and protect the
environment through energy-efficient products and practices.
Products that earn the ENERGY STAR prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict
energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and the DOE — helping us all save money and
fight global warming.

What Are the Benefits?
Save Money on Utility Bills
On average, imaging equipment models that meet the revised ENERGY STAR criteria will
be 40% more efficient. If all imaging equipment sold met the new ENERGY STAR
requirements, annual savings would grow to nearly 4 million metrics tons of greenhouse
gas emissions (CO2), equivalent to emissions from more than 700,000 cars.
Environmental Protection
Because they use less energy, these products reduce air pollution and greenhouse
gases caused by burning fossil fuels.

  • 4. Although we have made great improvements in our waste disposal habits over recent years, there are still lots of ways we can do more. http://www.livinggreener.gov.au/guides/reduce-energy-bills Photocopier Environmentally Friendly Photocopiers and Office Equipment Environmentally Friendly photocopiers and other office equipment are crucial to workplace energy-saving and waste-reduction. Many measures (procedural and technical) have been implemented by equipment manufacturers, dealers and distributors - even before the government's introduction of measures via legislation such as the WEEE directive. Additionally, all government departments and private enterprise organisations have become acutely aware in recent years of the need for the implementation of energy- efficiency measures - not least to address bottom-line profitability as well as the wider responsibility to reduce climate change. Environmental Issues: Recycling Office equipment including photocopiers which previously ended up on landfill sites are no longer able to do so under the WEEE directive. The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive affects those involved in the manufacture, selling and distribution, recycling or treating of any electronic equipment. Included in the range of items affected are household appliances, Information Technology and Telecommunications Equipment, audio visual and lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, surgical and hospital equipment and automatic dispensers and of course, office equipment including photocopiers. The aim of the WEEE directive is to reduce the waste generated from electrical and electronic equipment. The directive is also designed to ensure an improvement in the environmental procedures of all those involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic products. Manufacturers, sellers and distributors of office equipment are responsible for taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment. They are also required to achieve a series of rigorous recycling and recovery targets for different categories of appliance. Responsibilities can be discharged in a number of ways, including financial contributions. Environmental Issues: Energy Efficiency and Fossil Fuel Consumption Apart from computers and associated print devices, photocopiers are without doubt the most common items of office equipment in use today. Due to the need to be used "on demand", they can incur a significant environmental cost in terms of energy and paper usage and consequent greenhouse gas emissions. Energy Efficiency with Power Management Power management features are important for saving energy and an easy way to reduce air pollution. Energy efficient photocopiers provide a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of office photocopiers. Such machines come provided with an “energy saving" mode so that when not in use they "power down". This feature alone can reduce the energy needed to support the machine in periods of low activity by up to 60% or even more.
  • 5. Energy Efficiency with Technical Innovation A major energy-saving feature of the latest Canon photocopiers is the Canon "On- Demand" fusing system. The latest Canons use a thin fixing film, rather than a thick heating roller. They also use an efficient ceramic heating element, rather than a halogen heater. With these twin innovations, Canon achieves greatly improved energy efficiency and lower heat requirements. Heat is applied only when paper is passed through the fixing mechanism and images are "fixed" via the fixing film. In addition to this, Canon’s technology can allow the photocopier to make the transition between a cool energy-saving "sleep mode" to full operating temperatures in less than 10 seconds. This is a major advantage over conventional systems, which typically take more than one minute. A similarly innovative system is also available on the latest Konica Minolta bizbub series, including the bizhub C451. The induction heating fusing technology on the bizhub C451 is also one which minimises energy consumption and maximises energy efficiency, by fusing at a lower temperature. For More Information on Energy Saving Office Equipment Such technology is paving the way to increased energy efficiency - especially when coupled with an increase in the availability of "duplex" (paper-saving double-sided copying and printing) as standard, and the adoption of office disciplines in the curtailing of unnecessary paper creation via electronic Document Management Systems designed to operate with digital photocopiers. http://www.officemagic.co.uk/articles/environmentally-friendly-energy- efficient-copiers.php Request a Quote http://www.konicaminolta.com.au/products/168/Office-Colour.aspx http://www.fujixerox.com.au/products/copiers Canon http://www.ecocopier.co.za/ecocopiers Toshiba's Eco-Friendly Office Copier Prints Erasable Documents A new copy machine by Toshiba hopes to be the next big thing for paper-conscious offices. It prints documents that can be erased instantly by heating the pages, and the paper can be used up to five times before needing to be recycled. The toner is heat-sensitive, and loses colour when warmed up. But what happens if you leave your important documents in the hot car? According to CrunchGear,
  • 6. the printer with its erasable paper can result in a "60% cut in carbon dioxide emissions, when compared with using four sheets of paper. The copier can make 20 to 30 copies a minute and will cost about 20-30% more than conventional copiers with a similar performance, according to a report in The Nikkei (Japan's biggest business daily)." The company hopes to commercialise the copy machines sometime during the next fiscal year. It reminds us a little of a giant version of the PrePeat. The idea is very intriguing -- at least at first. After all, isn't it perfect that an office could reuse paper up to five times? While it sounds like a great way to curb the consumption of paper by offices, there are a few issues that shake the "green" label for the machine. For instance, at what rate will paper get heated and reused, rather than saved (since the purpose of a copy machine is to have hard copies of a document on hand), and does the energy that goes into heating the paper eat into any carbon savings by minimising paper use? And what chemicals are used in heat-sensitive ink -- it might be far less green than using soy-based inks. We aren't convinced that this is necessarily a green solution all around, and it underscores the fact that the greenest thing to do with copiers is just not use them. Avoiding printing in the first place is more practical than investing in this new machine. http://www.treehugger.com/clean-technology/toshibas-eco-friendly-office- copier-prints-erasable-documents.html Big Steps with a smaller Footprint Toshiba proudly introduces its greenest MFD ever Toshiba’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility encourages major efforts to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment. Promoting good environmental management practices across all of our products and business processes, the new e- STUDIO255/305/355/455 MFDs can boast the following environmentally friendly enhancements. The new e-STUDIO255/305/355/455 Multi- Function Device (MFD) efficiently outputs crisp monochrome images at speeds of 25 ppm to 45 ppm. Scanning in colour it empowers use of digital document storage and retrieval for considerate paper usage and improved work flow. Together with the following innovations, we can all comfortably contribute to environmental improvement activities. ENERGY SAVING Utilising Toshiba’s latest SOC (System on Chip) technology feature “Super Sleep Mode” the MFD consumes only 1W of power whilst in standby, in this mode it will be automatically woken for FAX and LAN activities. WASTE TONER RECYCLING SYSTEM 100% of all waste toner is used for imaging resulting in a system that conserves resources, reduces cost and is kinder to the environment. PAPER/TONER SAVING Hold Print – this feature holds jobs at the MFD ready to output at the user’s convenience
  • 7. eliminating loss and wastage of documents. Omit Blank Page - removes blank sheets from documents saving on unnecessary wasted paper. Auto Duplex – this mode can be set as default cutting paper usage by 50%. N in 1 – documents can be thumb nailed for archiving (up to 32 pages) onto a single sheet with substantial savings in paper and toner usage. Proof Print – eliminates wasted output by allowing the user to preview just one completed set at the MFD before committing to the rest of the job. Outside Erase – eliminates black background when copying or scanning books or other 3D objects, the resultant images are not only cleaner but result in a reduction of toner usage. Toner Save Mode – lets users print their documents in a legible output whilst saving toner, perfect for drafts. LONG LIFE CONSUMABLES Consumables are designed to last longer, reducing the frequency of periodic maintenance. COMPLIANCE – DESIGN TO DISPOSAL Using the “concept to grave” design model, the e-STUDIO 255/305 and 355/455 are designed to fully comply with the world’s most stringent standards such as Energy Star Tier2, Blue Angel Mark and R Ohs requirements of the European Union. HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES REDUCTION Products are lead free, Vinyl chloride-free, and Halogen-free. LIGHTER/MORE COMPACT the new lighter and more compact design means more efficient shipping and as a direct result a reduction of CO² emissions. Compared to predecessor, size has been reduced by up to 33%, weight by up to 31% and the number of parts by up to 30%. RECYCLED MATERIAL these new MFDs utilise packaging manufactured from recycled materials which can be returned for further recycling. In fact, over 14% of each new MFD is manufactured from recycled materials and the whole device is 100% totally recyclable. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Toshiba contributes to sustainable development in two ways: by supporting environmentally friendly values and by reducing the environmental impact of its products and business practices. Toshiba strives to be eco-friendly in all activities including procurement of raw materials and components, product design, production, and distribution. In line with this policy, Toshiba’s environmentally friendly MFDs feature recycled materials and are highly efficient with energy and other resources. http://www.eid.toshiba.com.au/n_enviro_feature1.asp Photocopying is comparatively more Eco friendly then printing, the reason being it involved less consumption of ink. But a lot it depends on need and requirement of the user. If there is an option to use either one of them then in that case photocopying is best one to go for. http://ph.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100628233437AANzpdc Success Stories NASA's Environmental Approach to Copiers NASA's unique "cost-per-copy" agency-wide contract, which means the agency purchases copy services rather than machines, allowed the inclusion of several environmental
  • 8. features important to NASA, including recycled paper and energy-efficiency. As a result, the agency estimates it will save approximately $4.5 million during the 5-year span of the contract. In a cost-per-copy contract environment, the contractor provides convenient copiers, all supplies including toner (which previously was a separate, high-cost item for all NASA sites), preventive maintenance, repairs and repair parts, training, moves, and associated labour costs. These convenience copiers were viewed as an easy item to consolidate into one agency wide contract that could yield considerable savings. Consolidating NASA's copier needs into one contract significantly reduced administrative costs associated with contracts being competed, awarded, administered, and closed out. http://www.epa.gov/epp/pubs/copiers.htm Below is a link to a site with an eco Calculator: http://www.biz.konicaminolta.com/environment/eco_calculator/index.html? rellink=top I could not find any photocopiers with the energy star rating at http://www.energyrating.gov.au/ I rang EPA Victoria on 1300 372 842 and I asked them and all they could think of was the energy rating website. Printer Greener Printing Environment Eco copiers can look at your current impact on the environment and provide practical solutions to help you be more Eco friendly. This doesn’t need to cost the Earth, as we can look to do this without increasing your current monthly costs. All the products we supply are specially selected to be the most environmentally (Eco) friendly in its sector.
  • 9. • Each year some 500 million empty or used cartridges end up going to landfill. • A cartridge in landfill will take over 1000 years to biodegrade. • To manufacture an original toner cartridge will have taken some 3.5 litres of oil. The downsides of printing and modern technology when you read the headline facts are frightening. The “paperless” office where we all read electronic documents and do not print has never materialised and is never likely to. Most users still prefer to read printed documents than electronic. Given that we all print and all use toner and ink jet cartridges, the least we can do is to dispose of them in the most environmentally friendly way possible. Here are some suggestions to help your office make an immediate impact: 1. Cut paper use. Print on both sides of the page "duplexing." Print multiple images per page and print only the quantity you need at the time you need it. Saving paper also saves energy: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that it takes 10 times more energy to manufacture a piece of paper than to create another print or copy. 2. Reach for the right paper, and recycle the paper you use. Use environmentally preferable paper - like High Yield Business Paper that is produced using half of the number of trees of conventional paper. Print on paper certified to sustainable forestry standards from global organisations such as the Forest Stewardship Council and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or use paper with recycled content. Install bins in several office locations to make it easy to collect paper for recycling or for reuse as notepaper. 3. Reach for the ENERGY STAR®. Upgrade old products with new, more efficient systems and the savings add up. For example some new machines can use about 30 percent less than a comparable multifunction system of two years ago. 4. Replace copiers or printers with products that do-it-all. An office copier, four laser printers and a fax machine can consume 1400 kWh of energy each year. But if one multifunction system can handle your document needs, it uses only 700 kWh annually. Eco Copiers Sustainability Calculator can help pinpoint opportunities to reduce the overall environmental footprint of your office equipment. 5. Don't throw away empty toner cartridges. Send them back to us for reuse and recycling.
  • 10. 6. Seek office equipment designed for re-manufacturing or recycling. Eco Copiers devices are designed with recycling and reuse in mind. Recycling and re- manufacturing programs have diverted more than 2 billion pounds of waste from landfills since 1991. 7. Use software to simplify the way you use documents. Cut back the time and energy spent on manual paper-based processes with work flow management systems and collaboration tools. For paper-intensive processes like legal discovery or mortgage loan document management, Docushare combined with scan-enabled multifunction devices can help reduce errors and improve version control – and ultimately eliminate the costs of producing, storing and shipping paper documents. Green Eco Copiers is now collecting empty cartridges in the UK. Eco Copiers Ltd realises that it has to lead by example. Good ethics Not to send any cartridges or mobile phones to landfill, having a positive impact on the environment. We can all make a difference to future generations - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. WEEE Environmentally Friendly photocopiers and other office equipment are crucial to workplace energy-saving and waste-reduction. Environmental Issues: Recycling and the WEEE Directive Office equipment including photocopiers which previously ended up on landfill sites are no longer able to do so under the WEEE directive. The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive affects those involved in the manufacture, selling and distribution, recycling or treating of any electronic equipment. Affected by the directive are household appliances, information technology equipment of all kinds , telephone/telecommunications equipment, audio visual gear, lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, hospital and medical devices and automatic dispensers and of course, office equipment including photocopiers.
  • 11. The aim of the WEEE directive is to reduce the waste generated from electrical and electronic equipment. The directive is also designed to ensure an improvement in the environmental procedures and processes of all those involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic products. Due to the need to be used "on demand", they can incur a significant environmental cost in terms of energy and paper usage and consequent greenhouse gas emissions Thus power management features are important for saving energy and an easy way to reduce air pollution. Energy efficient photocopiers provide a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of office photocopiers. Such machines come provided with "energy saving" mode so that when not in use they "power down". This feature alone can reduce the energy needed to support the machine in periods of low activity by over 60%. A major energy-saving feature of the latest photocopiers are so-called "on demand" fusing systems. A thin fixing film, rather than a thick heating roller is used. Additionally, a ceramic heating element, rather than a halogen heater is used. With these twin innovations, the latest photocopiers operate with greatly improved energy efficiency and lower heat requirements. Heat is used only when paper is passed through the fixing mechanism and images are "fixed" via the fixing film. In addition to this, the new technology can allow the photocopier to make the change between a cool energy- saving "sleep mode" to full operating temperatures in less than 10 seconds. This is a major advantage over conventional systems, which typically take more than one minute. The induction heating fusing technology on the Develop C452 is also one which minimises energy consumption and maximises energy efficiency, by fusing at a lower temperature. Such technology is paving the way to increased energy efficiency - especially when coupled with an increase in the availability of "duplex" (paper-saving double-sided copying and printing) as standard. http://www.ecocopiers.co.uk/greener-printing.html New Eco Printer released by Star Micronics This article appeared in the Earth Times on 15th March 2010 announcing the release by Star Micronics of the TSP100ECO. This is a comment from a Star spokesperson: “The TSP100ECO™ is a direct response to worldwide demand to reduce carbon emissions and retailers’ responsibility to reduce energy consumption enabling them to save money and contribute to the battle against global warming,” stated Christophe Naasz, Marketing Director for Star Micronics. Naasz further commented, “Combining futurePRNT’s unique software advantages with a reduction in power and paper consumption will enable users to not only save the environment and operating expenses, but also satisfy low-power consumption requirements for Energy Star.”

Details on their paper management are coming but the power saving system they use alone makes it a fantastic option in reducing the impact on the environment. Looks like a truly green printer is here. http://www.ecoprinters.com.au/pos-printers/new-eco-printer-released-by-star- micronics/ Green retailing, Greentailing and Eco Printing Its coming sooner than you think – environmentally friendly retailers, eco-friendly retailing, and green retailing - under whatever label, it will mean substantially more than simply choosing paper bags, nevertheless the perceived expense seems to possibly be holding a number of retailers back. On the other hand “going green” will probably not end up being as time-consuming or even as costly as everyone believes. Merchants that believe heading eco-friendly will be simply one more fad or perhaps advertising attention-grabber ought to reconsider their position. When consumers develop an increasing consciousness regarding a retailer’s entire impact regarding the environment, these same retailers might be prudent to ensure that they compare favourably to any yardsticks that are instituted by green watchdogs. The reality is that green retailing (or simply ‘green-tailing’) is definitely here to stay. With the ongoing perils and concerns associated with global warming, in addition to escalating concern regarding the impact retail businesses generate regarding the natural world, the realities of green-tailing and being measured as eco-friendly will start to hit home. Retailers who take note now and begin the processes required to become eco-friendly now have an advantage over those that start late. There will be a marketing advantage for sure, as well as the financial advantage of being able to spread any costs of going green over a longer period rather than being hit with large costs of conversion all at once. Eco Printers are one such area where the cost of conversion is minimal yet the savings in terms of printer power consumption and paper usage can be quite dramatic. http://www.ecoprinters.com.au/category/green-retailing/
  • 13. Wave Energy: A new energy to power Australian homes in 2017 Power Buoy®; Credit: © Ocean Power Technologies “This looks like a good idea Sarah, I wonder if the energy prices will be cheaper and will it have any effect on the fish, or other marine life and how will this affect our ecosystem?” As the Curiosity rover lands on Mars, the conquest of Renewable Marine Energy follows the same process: in small measured steps. This important 19 MW project is the next step in the on-going relationship between American wave power technology designer Ocean Power Technologies and Lockheed Martin, one of the world's space specialists. With the most advanced technology in the country best renowned for waves in the world, the wave energy farm could supply close to 100 MW in the long term. This team will be responsible of the first wave energy farm in Australia. Installed along the coast of Victoria (Portland), 362 km south West of Melbourne, this 19 MW farm will produce 75000 MWh/year (with a reproducibility factor of 50%) and supply electricity to 14,000 Australian homes. This project will reduce levels of CO2 by 37,000 tons/year and allow Australia to save $851,000 AUD/year of carbon taxes (based on $23 AUD/ton of CO2). The work is scheduled to start in 2013 and will be completed in 2017. For the last 15 years, OPT has been the pioneer in conception, prototype creation and the connection of these systems to the electric grid. The American company, founded by George W. Taylor (Australian) and Dr Joseph R. Burn, work with the wave energy converter called "Power Buoy". Fixed on the sea bed, the technology follows the back and forth wave movement to harness and convert mechanical energy to electricity. These systems are certified by "Lloyd's Register" meaning they can function in big waves that measure up to 28 meters (80-90 feet). However, even with this safety margin, the ocean continues to surprise us. There are two models with a life span of 25 years: "Power buoy 150kW" and "Power buoy 500kW".
  • 14. In 2004, the US Navy was in search of a new autonomous system to generate electricity. From this announcement the relationship between OPT and Lockheed Martin was born. The first prototype was installed along the coast of New Jersey in 2005. The program ended successfully in 2008 leading to the development and installation of a more powerful system: 40 kW connected to a grid in Hawaii, followed by a 150 kW system in Scotland and currently, a 500 kW buoy in development. Lockheed Martin contributes its specialist knowledge in the design, production, integration systems, and project management of the Power Buoy technology. Lockheed Martin also represents financial security for investors and boosts funding research for the Australian project. OPT shares increased by 72 cents after the news of this partnership. The Australian government contributed $67 million AUD of the $225 million AUD budget for this project and will participate through local industry players to the farm's production, roll-out and maintenance. For its operation in territorial Australian seas, Australian company Victoria Wave Partner Pty Ltd (currently held by OPT) will own, manage, and be responsible for its development. Currently, its mission is to evaluate potential funding as well as develop important partnerships with local industry and public services regarding electricity repurchasing and sales. Eventually, energy will be sold to electricity suppliers which power commercial and residential buildings. The economic aspect of this energy is still to be researched before we know its impact on costs. An article written by Gilles Parkinston states that wave energy could remain under 100$/Mwh by 2020. New American high-technology on Australian soil will bring attention from the local players who also strive to be leaders in the field. The government continues to promoting the nation's intellectual property by financially participating in the development of smaller projects and prototypes like the 2MW Carnegie project in Western Australia and various other projects by Ocean Linx and BioPower System etc... The funding for these, however, remains modest and proportional to their profitability. As Australia is looking to establish its renewable energy industry within an already competitive international context, the Australian government still chooses a significant investment in an American technology that is more advanced. http://www.earthtimes.org/energy/wave-energy-a-energy-power-australian- homes-2017/2168/ Why Go Green? The Environmental Printing Company firmly believes that you, the planet, and your business can benefit from printing green. Here are just some of the reasons why: You Help Save Trees The average office worker uses 0.68 kilograms of paper per day, that’s 170 kilograms per year! You can make a HUGE difference just by changing the type of paper you use. By switching to recycled or sugar cane paper, your business could save hundreds, maybe even thousands of trees. You Help Reduce Toxic Waste The paper making process is a toxic one, and it produces a lot of waste. A medium-sized print shop uses about 20 tons of paper each month, which produces: • 554 kilograms of water-borne waste • 680,741 litres of waste water
  • 15. • 9,025 kilograms of solid waste • 17,770 kilograms of greenhouse gases • 299,880 BTUs of energy At The Environmental Printing Company: • We use environmentally friendly products such as vegetable-based inks, recycled paper, and sugar cane paper. • We recycle ALL of our waste paper and by-products. • We use 40% less toner than conventional printers and ALL of our digital components are recyclable. • We use environmentally friendly cleaning products on our machines with very low VOC levels. By switching to green printing you can eliminate a lot of waste from the printing process. http://www.environmentalprintingco.com/why-go-green/ What Is ENERGY STAR? ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices. Products that earn the ENERGY STAR prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and the DOE — helping us all save money and fight global warming. What Are the Benefits? Save Money on Utility Bills On average, imaging equipment models that meet the revised ENERGY STAR criteria will be 40% more efficient. If all imaging equipment sold met the new ENERGY STAR requirements, annual savings would grow to nearly 4 million metrics tons of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2), equivalent to emissions from more than 700,000 cars. Environmental Protection Because they use less energy, these products reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases caused by burning fossil fuels.
