The document discusses plans for public art installations at four sites near stadium bridges in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A task force was formed with representatives from the public art commission and local neighborhoods to review submissions from artists and select finalists. The task force spent over 50 hours on the process, narrowing 32 initial submissions down to four finalists. Public meetings were then held for the finalists to visit the sites and present their proposals, and get feedback from residents.

Dot Matrix
• One hundred anodized aluminum "stalks" of various heights, each capped
with a Bott's dot.
• Integrate into all four sites designated in the RFP for this project.
At one end, along the Rose White Park Fence, Dot Matrix begins with simple dots
on the pavement along the edge of the sidewalk. As the visitor continues toward the
White Street termination, the dots grow taller, appearing to extrude from the ground
plane, growing and clumping in naturalistic formations. At the underpass the dot
stalks grow taller and curve like vines, appearing to grow through the wall of the
underpass. Finally, the piece culminates in tall, straight elements along the Stadium
Bridge, which match the scale and intensity of the stadium, and the roar of the
crowds within it.

"I believe the best project will be one where there is involvement
with the city and stakeholders in the development of the design.
Each of these ideas have many possible paths which would be
determined through our dialogue. This is a major gateway into the
city, and as such, deserves a special project to honor that
prominent position."

Four separate proposals – select one or smaller hybrids of combined elements.
• Graphic sculpture on bridge light posts
• Flattened tubular chandelier with graphic paint on underpass
• “Rah Rah” cheerleader pyramids on both sides of bridge
• “Annie’s Arbor” tree planters on both sides of bridge
In my investigation of this site, I have entertained a series of directions for your
consideration. Herein you will find two families of ideas with two options for each,
making four distinct proposals with the added possibilities of some hybrids between
the concepts. I believe the best project will be one where there is involvement with
the city and stakeholders in the development of the design. Each of these ideas have
many possible paths which would be determined through our dialogue. This is a
major gateway into the city, and as such, deserves a special project to honor that
prominent position.

Lady Ann
• One hundred aluminum ”cones” in the shape of a 55’ wheel.
• Each cone engraved with cultural text created by residents
• Can be walked under and seen from a vehicle.
Our inspiration is based on both a historic reference of Ann Arbor’s industry (the
mill) and a contemporary reflection of mobility (the wheel). We are taking these
observations as a symbol for unity, wholeness, and infinity. Without beginning or
end, without sides or corners. This inspiration is then charged with the multiplicity,
diversity and rich culture we have experienced in Ann Arbor during our
research, site visit and experience with the local community. The extrusion of over
100 cones from the wheel of its of surface is an abstract representation of the
dynamic, diverse, and rich historic qualities of Ann Arbor and its community. The
cones are constantly reflecting on each other blending the memories of past with
experiences of the future.

"This project interests me because of the variety of sites to be
treated and the challenge of finding ways for art to animate and
integrate these different locations. I enjoy using existing
structures and surfaces and weaving the art concept into these so
that the viewer discovers something new each time they move
through the space."

Arbor Winds
• Ten etched panels of Pennsylvania Blue Stone granite on State Street underpass each
10’ high and 7’wide lit by LED lights.
• Three etched glass windscreens at Rose White Park 5’ high and 74’ long lit by LED
integrated lighting
• 12 etched acrylic/aluminum banners on the bridge each 4’ x 6’.
Three areas are engaged by the artwork. The first is the underpass of State Street
below the Stadium Bridge. This is a gateway to the town so the two lines of iconic
trees etched into stone panels on the underpass walls suggest a colonnade to greet visitors to
Ann Arbor. The second area where artwork would be installed is The White Street
termination on the north side of East Stadium Blvd. Along the stretch of sidewalk above the
curving walkway of the new park area would be three sections of glass art each 24’
long and comprised of three panels. The third element in Arbor Winds is a series of eight
banners on the bridge itself. These banners, attached to the existing lampposts by steel arms,
will be anchored to 8 alternating lampposts on either side of the road hanging over the
sidewalk. They appear to curl as if caught by the wind.
