It can be a challenge for youth soccer coaches to get players to move around the field - even without the ball. If your team is still playing in a pack, not spreading out, or is always around the ball, watch this slidecast and learn three activities that will definitely get your players moving.
3. Switch it Up
• Encourage players to move from crowded to un-crowded
spaces.
• Ask players to keep their chins up.
Activity:
• 1st stage: Players will switch balls with a teammate.
• 2nd stage: Switch and then explode around the perimeter
cones.
4. Color the Field
• Every player with a ball. We want to encourage them to move
all around the rectangle or square we created on the field.
• Coach can ask the players what color they want to be. Let’s
give them an imagination and empower them.
• You can add restrictions. Ex: You can not be too close to the
coach. This will teach them to move away from pressure (the
defender!).
• Have fun! Create your own color. The kids will love to color up
your work of art.
5. Let Them Play
• Organize small sided games around the field.
• Stop play when the players start to bunch up.
• Ask them to keep their chin up and look to move
into the open areas by dribbling out of pressure.
• Stop play again when a player finds a way to open
up the space. Point out what works when you
play with your head up.
6. Find Those Teachable Moments!!!
• These three activities will assist in getting your
players to move, move, move!
• Have fun with these activities. Use your voice
and generate excitement to get the players
engaged with the idea of spreading out and let
them know why we need to create space.
• Let’s remember to not only point out
weaknesses, but be sure to celebrate the good
plays as well.
7. Elevate the game
on and off the field
