6. In what was does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
The Bhangra music magazine that I created uses different forms and convention of a real music magazine this is done
by having alike layouts and structures, throughout the cover, contents and article.
The layout is really simple and not too over the top however it is not too little either, so therefore it will still look
attractive and grab the attention of it’s intended audience. The intended audience of my magazine is people aged
between 15 - 20.
The reason why I made this age group my target audience is because after carrying out my secondary research the
results showed that those aged between 15 – 20 had an interest in music.
The main colours I used was red, yellow, orange, grey. I came up with this theme by relating it to what colour the
models are wearing which made them standout. Most Bhangra magazines have their cover image of the magazines
featured artist, the shot type that is used is usually a medium shot of the artist.
You can see the similarities with the
magazine I created and the mix mag
magazine. The main article on my front
cover is big and bold and stands out on
the page which grabs the readers
attention. The main photo covers the
whole of the front page, although I did
not include any other pictures on my
front cover as the page would then look
to over crowded however I did include
headline of other articles which are also
in the magazine just like the mix mag
front cover. I kept to the same colour
scheme on the page because I did not
want the page to look too busy, I also
included the website on the top right
hand corner of the front cover.
7. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
The person that is shown on the main page and in the article is also shown on the contents page, this
shows continuity throughout the magazine. This is also shown in real music magazines which create
links between each page and what the main headlines are. The contents page was designed to look
simple however also attractive. I kept it to the same colour scheme which is on the front cover. I had
the background two colours with a mixture of photographs which makes the page stand out. The
image I used in the my contents page is also similar to the main picture I used at the front of my
magazine and on the main article.
I used a lot of shapes and colours on the contents page. This will persuade the target audience to read
the whole magazine. By using language that my audience understand will also encourage them to buy
my magazine on a more regular basis.
You can see the similarities with the
content page I created and the NME
content page. As you can see both of
the pages are very similar and the I
tried to make the layout similar to the
NME content page. I included all the
headlines which are in the magazine
and I have also included photos for
each of the articles. The colour scheme
I used is very similar to the NME
content page. I kept the font, size and
colour the same. I also kept to the same
colour theme that is on the front cover
to stop the page looking too busy.
8. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
I also broke down any barriers that I had in my article through my mode of address, I showed that my intended
audience were interested in the story I had to offer to them in the article. To do this I had to make sure I had a
few images on the page as well as text. During the interview I had to make sure that I asked relevant questions,
again I also used different shot types.
I made my article different from most articles to do this;
I had a plain black background with images on it as well as text, I also had my artist as the main background on
one side, I did this because I don’t usually see Bhangra magazine articles like this, I did this because I thought it
made it the page look more attractive and appealing.
On the main article I had used a
range of shots and locations
which makes the page look more
appealing, however I still kept to
the same colour scheme
throughout out front cover,
content page and article.
I used a black background which
makes the images and text I have
used to stand out more, the
reason why I chose to use a black
background is because I wanted
to show contrast between the
content page and the article.
9. What kind of media institution might distribute your magazine
and why?
The media institution I feel that will be suitable to distribute my magazine will be IPC
Media. The reason why I chose IPC media is because they are the leading magazine
in the UK and have distributed many other magazines.
The company produce magazines for over 60 media brands and print magazine with
an attainment of more than a third of the woman in the United Kingdom. IPC’s
website reach out to over 14 million users each month, they also have a diverse
audience of men and women.
In my opinion I feel that this is the company that I would like to produce my “Desi
Vibes” as I the target audience for the magazine is men and women.
The magazine that I have produced is very similar to magazine that IPC have
distributed. Companies such as PPA distribute magazine that are very different to
mine. The price of my magazine will be fairly low to the magazine that IPC
distribute, this will bring in more money for the business as well have my magazine
having more publicity.
10. Above I have shown a range of different music genre magazines
for Bhangra to Indie, I also included the magazine cover that I
created; my magazine has similar aspects to the other front
covers such as the shot type that has been used and the layout
of the headlines within the magazine.
11. The reason why I used Photoshop...
By producing my work on a Abode
Photoshop had enabled a much more
professional look for my magazine front
cover, content page and double page
article.
I learnt how to use Photoshop from scratch
and I also learnt how to using the
specialised tools such as gradient tool and
sharpen(to sharpen a blurred image).
Photoshop had helped me edit the images
and change the colour and size of the text.
I enjoyed using Photoshop because it was
easy to adapt to and easy to use, by using
Photoshop also made my magazine look
more professional .
12. How did you attract/address you audience?
I intended to attract my target audience which was 16-21 year old girls
through a range of various things, firstly I had a look at the Brit-Asian
magazine has wrote down what had attracted me to that particular
magazine and implemented it in my ‘Dholi Vibes’ magazine.
I used bold, bright colours such as red, blue, orange and white on a
black background which attracts my intended audience as the colours that I
used were conventional for Bhangra magazine.
The price of my magazine was £2.99 this is a reasonable and affordable
price for target audience.
The bright and professional images of my models attracts my target
audience as they are the type of models the target audience will be
attracted to.
The promotional offers that I included on the front cover ‘WIN tickets to
go and see H Dhami’s live performance’ makes my readers want to buy the
magazine as the artist is well known in the Bhangra industry.
