4. Hall of Fame Woman HELEN KELLER Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama An illness (probably Scarlet Fever) at 19 months left her deaf, blind, and mute.

5. Helen Keller Ms. Keller started college at Radcliffe College in the Fall of 1900. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in 1904. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

6. Awards and Accomplishments After receiving her degree from Radcliffe she continued to excel and receive many awards. In 1961 in Washington, D.C. she received the Lion’s Humanitarian Award for her lifetime of service to Humanity and for providing the inspiration of the adoption by Lion’s Club International Foundation of their sight and Conservation and Aid to Blind programs.

7. Awards and Accomplishments She overcame her physical disabilities with great strength and integrity. In 1964, Ms. Keller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

8. Induction into the Women’s Hall of Fame Ms. Keller received the extraordinary honor of being inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame in 1965. She was one of twenty women inducted. The ceremony was held at the New York World’s Fair. She was inducted along with Eleanor Roosevelt.

9. Helen Keller Ms. Keller died in June of 1968. She passed away just a couple of weeks before her 88th birthday. She was an extraordinary woman who should be remembered for her courage, leadership and passion for helping the deaf and blind.
