Adjectives คําคุณศัพท์
คําคุณศัพท์ ได้แก่ คําที่ใช่ประกอบนาม (หรื อสรรพนาม) เพื่อบอกลักษณะ หรื อเพื่อกําหนดอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับ
นามนั้น
The Greedy Dog
A foolish dog goes to the market because he is hungry2 . He steals a small piece of meat from a busy3 shop. With the
piece of meat in his mouth, he runs to the river and stops on the wooden4 bridge5. The water of the river is clear6. He can
see another7 dog with a big piece of meat under the bridge. He thinks, ''MY meat is small. His is big'' He wants that
piece of meat. He drops his piece into the river. Then he himself jumps into the water. But there is no meat, no dog... .
The greedy dog only saw himself in the water. He has dropped8 his own meat into the water. He has not got any meat
now. He must go and find some meat again. This time, he will not drop it.

คําคุณศัพท์ต่างๆ ในเรื่ องข้างต้น อาจแบ่งออกเป็ นประเภทๆ ได้ 2 ประเภท คือ
1. Descriptive Adj. ได้แก่คุณศัพท์ที่บอกลักษณะ, คุณสมบัติ, ขนาด, สี , ฯลฯ เช่น foolish, hungry, small, busy,
wooden, clear, big, greedy, etc. โดยปกติใช้วางหน้าคํานามหรื อวางไว้หลัง ''to be ''เท่านั้น

ให้สงเกตว่า เราใช้คุณศัพท์ชนิดนี้วางไว้หน้าคํานามเท่านั้น ไม่วางไว้หน้าสรรพนาม แต่ถาใช่หลัง ''to be'' คําที่มาข้างหน้า

2. Determinative Adj. ได้แก่คุณศัพท์ที่กาหนดอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับนามนั้น เช่น his, another, this, that, some,

any, no, etc. คุณศัพท์ประเภทนี้ไม่บอกลักษณะของนามที่มนประกอบ แต่บอกบางสิ่ งบางอย่างเกี่ยวกับจํานวน ปริ มาณ

หรื อบอกว่า เป็ นอันนี้ อันนี้ หรื อบอกเจ้าของ เป็ นต้น
-บอกจํานวนหรื อปริ มาณ( Quantitative) ได้แก่ some, any, no, another, every, much, many คําบอกจํานวนนับ (

one, two,...) และลําดับที่ (first, second,...) ก็อาจจัดอยูในคุณศัพท์ประเภทนี้
-บอกว่าเป็ นอันนี้อนนั้น (Demonstrative) ได้แก่ this, that, those

-บอกเจ้าของ ( Possessive Adj. ได้แก่ my, your, his, her, Dan's, etc.
โดยปกติ Determinative Adj. จะใช้วางหน้าคํานามเสมอ
My meat is small. เนื้อของฉันชิ้นเล็ก
He hasn't got any meat now. ตอนนี้มนไม่มีเนื้ออีกแล้ว

Determinative Adj. ถ้าใช้ตามลําพังโดยไม่มีคานามตามหลังจะกลายเป็ นคําสรรพนามไป

This book is mine. That is Dan's หนังสื อเล่มนี้เป็ นของฉัน เล่มนั้นเป้ นของแดน
(His, mine เป็ น Possessive Pronoun, That เป็ น Demonstrative Pronoun)
จงขีดเส้ นใต้ Descriptive Adj. หนึ่งเส้ น และขีดเส้ นใต้ Determinative Adj. สองเส้ น
Dogs
A dog is a clever animal. It has four legs and a tail. It has a good nose. It has keen 1 eyes and ears. Some
dogs are big and strong . Some are small and delicate2. There are white dogs, brown dogs, black dogs... . Thai dogs are
useful dogs. They can guard3 our houses. Policemen use big American dogs to catch4 thieves5. I have a dog, too. Its name
is Too. Every day, when we go away, Too guards our house. No thieves can steal6 any objects7 in our house.

3. จงบอกว่ าคําทีพมพ์ ด้วยตัวเอนดํา เป็ นคุณศัพท์ (Adjective ) หรือสรรพนาม (Pronoun)

Mustapha is a rich man but he is unhappy. His friends want to help him but they can't. They say, ''our
pockets are empty8 but yours are full9 of gold.'' Mustapha says, '' Your heart is full of joy10 . There isn't any in mine. Give
me some happiness. I just don't want much.''
His friend Kali says, ''I have a lot of beautiful birds. I'II give you some.'' Another friend says, '' Do you
want this?'' and he shows his beautiful bag to Mustapha.
Mustapha thanks his good friends one after another11 . He says to them, '' You are very kind to me. I'II
never forget12 that,''

a little ที่นาหน้าคํานามนับได้ ไม่ใช่คาบอกจํานวน แต่ little เป็ นคําคุณศัพท์มีความหมาย =small เช่น I have a little
