- Mary Cassatt was born in America, but lived most of her life in Paris, France. Mary Cassatt shocked her parents by insisting that she pursue a career as a professional artist. Cassatt was heavily influenced by her mentor Edgar Degas. Three of her most accomplished works were from 1878 - Portrait of the Artist (self-portrait), Little Girl in a Blue Armchair, and Reading Le Figaro (portrait of her mother). After 1900, she focused almost exclusively on mother/child portraits. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, France awarded her the Legion d'honneur in 1904. Mary Cassatt went blind at the end of her life, and had to put her brushes aside.
