Target Audience

Due to the fact that this poster looks
quite mystical and magical suggests
that the target audience is children as
they are mainly interested in films
that are centred around a fictional
narrative. As well as this the intertitle
at the top of the poster features
“Alice In Wonderland” which is
traditionally a children's film
therefore the audience are shown
here again as it is more likely to be for
children as appose to adults. Tone and Register
The poster uses a range of colours to create a

The actress is looking directly into the camera.
The direct address here creates a relationship
between her and the audience in which she is
asking for help. This reflects her character
within the film, therefore the audience
sympathise with her which is possible a unique
selling point for the film. In addition the fact
that she is crying implies that she is the victim in
the film.

She is positioned behind bars which suggests
that she is trapped. Therefore the idea of
escape is introduced which hints as to what
the film is about. Ideas of kidnap and
entrapment are brought to mind indicating
that the genre could possible be thriller or
horror as these are typical conventions.

The name of the main actress is featured
on the poster which is a unique selling
point because the audience will recognise
the actress and know her films therefore
will be encouraged to watch this film.

The name if the film has been written in
fire which is quite interesting as it stands
out on the poster because there isn’t a lot
of colour. The fire has connotations of
death and suffering suggesting that in the
film this woman will suffer. The genre is
shown here because fire is something
usually frightening which correlates with a
horror or thriller film. The fact that all the
letters are in capitals indicates that the
designers want all the text to be read
  highlighting its importance.

The credits are featured on the poster to show
the audience who created the film, this
therefore increases the chance of them
watching it because once they recognise a
producer who has produced a successful film
they will know that this film is also going to be
successful
Target Audience
There is not a lot of colour on this poster
indicating that it is more likely to be aimed at
an older audience. Furthermore the image is
quite powerful in which it shows the woman
suffering which is not appropriate for an
audience who are adults. As well as this the
actress promoted on the poster is not a well
known actress for young children therefore
adults will be more likely to recognise her.

Tone and Register
There is a mellow sinister tone created on this
poster by the use of colour in the fact that the
woman’s complexion has almost been satirised
in order to pay attention to the fact that she is
crying.

Effect and Effectiveness
The tagline “TIME IS RUNNING OUT”
suggests that there is a race against time
presenting an anxious effect as the audience
know that the woman possibly has a limited
amount of time before she is trapped.

Analysis of film posters

  • 1. Analysis of Film Posters Kianna Briggs
  • 2. Micro Elements The use of direct address here by Little Red Riding Hood looking directly into the camera creates a connection between the audience and her because her eyes are a powerful image which may be used to frighten the audience. Furthermore it highlights the genre because this image looks haunting emphasising the fact that The name of the film is written in red writing it is a horror film. which simply relates to the title of the film. The tagline here almost summarises However it is edited with spots of blood the narrative of the film. This is surrounding it implying that death and pain will be significant because it is short therefore involved in the film. As a result of this it changes allowing the audience to possibly the concept of the original fairytale where there remember it. The font is quit small was a happy ending and could indicate that this indicating that it is not as important as one will not be a happy ending but instead filled the powerful image of Little Red Riding with deaths and murder. Hood which occupies the majority of the poster.
  • 3. Micro Elements The costume in which she is wearing is the typical outfit that Little Red Riding Hood is known for wearing. It highlights her status indicating that she is not from a privileged background. Therefore the audience who know the story will appreciate the fact that the specific elements of the story have not changed. Her posture is reserved suggesting that she is a shy, innocent character however her facial expression indicates that she has a darker side showing the change in genre. The inter-title here increases the chance of the audience actually watching the film. This is The layout of this poster is simple only using two because the audience who watch Twilight will columns suggesting that the main focus of the also be interested in this film which suggests poster is the image as it is centred in the middle. that this film will be successful because Twilight The position of it connotes that the designers was also successful. As well as this the text specifically want the audience to look at the image underneath it features adjectives such as because it not only suggests the change in genre ”breath-taking” which almost entices the from the original fairytale but also is a powerful audience to watch it. image because it immediately indicates the name of the film by her costume.
  • 4. Macro Elements Target Audience The tradition fairytale Little Red Riding Hood is aimed at young children however the image of a little girl looking directly into the camera with a haunting expression on her face suggests that this is a horror film aimed at a more older audience. As well as this the colours used are quite sinister and dark indicating that this poster is aimed at an older audience who would be more intrigued. Tone and Register The tone of this poster is quite sinister because Effect and Effectiveness it simply has one image of Little Red Riding There is limited text on this poster. The effect of this Hood surrounded by snow implying that the is so the audience focus precisely on the image as film is set in the winter in which it is dark and appose to the text. However the type of font used is mysterious. Therefore the tone is mysterious to quite basic allowing the audience to be able to easily the audience engaging them to watch the film. read the information. The effect of this is for the audience to interpret the information how they want without having to worry about the difficulty of have to understand what the text says.
  • 5. Micro Elements The three main characters have been included on this poster but the designers have merged separate images together in order to present the different lives of the characters and also the type of character they are. For example here the witch is surrounded by dark colours which indicates she is the villain within the film. As well as this it also indicates that she is powerful because of the type of clothes she is wearing. In addition he posture is aimed at Snow White suggesting that there is a The central image is of Snow White suggesting that relationship between them, possibly one the film is centred around her. Furthermore the where she is hunting for Snow White. clothes she is wearing connote her status suggesting that she is poor. She is surrounded by flowers and pots The Huntsman’s posture is positioned which could indicate that she lives in the woods. As a towards the camera but he is looking result of this the audience are aware that the towards Snow White which could indicate producers have not changed the elements of the that he is going to save her. However the fact fairytale that are in relation to the traditional fairytale. that the witch and the Huntsman are on either sides of Snow White implies that they represent the good and bad sides.
  • 6. Micro Elements The inter-title here is used as a promotional method. This is because the audience who watched Alice in Wonderland will also be interested in this film. As well as this by including a similar fairytale indicates what type of film this will be. The position of Snow White, turning away from the witch indicates that she is possibly Although all these characters are on different sides they all frightened. However the fact have one thing in common which is that they all have a that she is turning into the weapon. This immediately implies that there is going to be a Huntsman suggests that she battle between the characters suggesting that there will be is looking for his help. action events in the film. This is useful to the audience because Therefore his role of the it could either increase the possibility of them watching the hero is shown by her body film as they may be interested in action. posture. As well as this because she is in the middle of the poster suggests she is the main character.
  • 7. Macro Elements Target Audience Due to the fact that this poster looks quite mystical and magical suggests that the target audience is children as they are mainly interested in films that are centred around a fictional narrative. As well as this the intertitle at the top of the poster features “Alice In Wonderland” which is traditionally a children's film therefore the audience are shown here again as it is more likely to be for children as appose to adults. Tone and Register The poster uses a range of colours to create a Effect and Effectiveness mystical tone which correlates with the idea The use of three images indicates there are three that it is a Disney film. This is because Disney stories merged into one however the fact that their is an institution that is well known for magic facial expressions are serious suggests that this is therefore the use of mystical colours such as not a jolly film. Therefore the effect of this is that blue incorporates the idea of magic. As a the audience understand that there is a good and result of this the audience are shown. evil battle which is situated around the girl in the middle who is obviously Snow White .
  • 8. Micro Elements The actress is looking directly into the camera. The direct address here creates a relationship between her and the audience in which she is asking for help. This reflects her character within the film, therefore the audience sympathise with her which is possible a unique selling point for the film. In addition the fact that she is crying implies that she is the victim in the film. She is positioned behind bars which suggests that she is trapped. Therefore the idea of escape is introduced which hints as to what the film is about. Ideas of kidnap and entrapment are brought to mind indicating that the genre could possible be thriller or horror as these are typical conventions. The name of the main actress is featured on the poster which is a unique selling point because the audience will recognise the actress and know her films therefore will be encouraged to watch this film.
  • 9. Micro Elements The name if the film has been written in fire which is quite interesting as it stands out on the poster because there isn’t a lot of colour. The fire has connotations of death and suffering suggesting that in the film this woman will suffer. The genre is shown here because fire is something usually frightening which correlates with a horror or thriller film. The fact that all the letters are in capitals indicates that the designers want all the text to be read highlighting its importance. The credits are featured on the poster to show the audience who created the film, this therefore increases the chance of them watching it because once they recognise a producer who has produced a successful film they will know that this film is also going to be successful
  • 10. Target Audience There is not a lot of colour on this poster indicating that it is more likely to be aimed at an older audience. Furthermore the image is quite powerful in which it shows the woman suffering which is not appropriate for an audience who are adults. As well as this the actress promoted on the poster is not a well known actress for young children therefore adults will be more likely to recognise her. Tone and Register There is a mellow sinister tone created on this poster by the use of colour in the fact that the woman’s complexion has almost been satirised in order to pay attention to the fact that she is crying. Effect and Effectiveness The tagline “TIME IS RUNNING OUT” suggests that there is a race against time presenting an anxious effect as the audience know that the woman possibly has a limited amount of time before she is trapped.
