Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21, known as trisomy 21. It occurs when there are 47 chromosomes instead of the typical 46, and causes problems with physical and cognitive development. There is no cure for Down syndrome, but increased medical care and support has led to a higher life expectancy now around 60 years old on average.
