1. Technology in Mathematics Using technology to help meet the needs of developmental students.
2. Examples of Technology Graphing calculators Instructional videos My Math Lab, ALEKS Smart boards Tablets Clickers Microsoft Mathematics Add-in to Word
3. Technology Innovations in Developmental Math American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges reports that in order for curriculum to be up-to-date, technology is essential. 2005 OVAE report recommends: more technology use in the classroom in order to supplement instruction, integrating classroom and lab instruction, variety of instructional methods, and accurate student placement into courses.
4. Acceleration Moving students through the developmental sequence at a faster pace. Community College of Denver allows students to complete two levels of developmental classes in one semester using a self paced approach with My Math Lab.
5. Fully Online Accelerated Developmental Math Colorado Community Colleges Online allows students to take two levels of developmental mathematics in one semester fully online. SmartThinking is available to students for extra support.
6. The Open Learning Initiative Carnegie Mellon University offers web based courses using intelligent tutoring services, virtual labs and opportunities for assessment and feedback. Students work through the open and free OLI learning environment.
7. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) Supplements classroom instruction using commercial products such as My Math Lab, ALEKS, and Plato. Allows students to address individual weaknesses using math tutorial/practice software.
8. Web 2.0 Technology Many instructors have integrated Web 2.0 technology into courses. Examples include blogs, videos on You-tube, lectures on Second Life, My Space and Facebook pages.
9. San Jacinto College This semester we are piloting 6 sections of developmental mathematics at the Central Campus that are self paced using My Math Lab. The instructor and a tutor are available to the students for assistance and support during class time.
10. Challenges Traditional formats are often preferred by instructors. Large number of adjuncts teaching at the community college level. Funding. Lack of professional developmental.
11. Improvements needed in Developmental Education Simply using technology as an add-on will not make dramatic improvements in developmental education. Course redesign is needed in order to adequately prepare students for college level courses and the work force.
