How can you be a person online?
Be a face, not just a name (or logo). Take Frank at Comcast for example (http://twitter.com/comcastcares). Instead of having his logo on Twitter, he uses his own picture. It helps to foster a feeling that you are dealing with a real person.

It’s easy to see who’s just broadcasting out, whether it’s on Twitter, Facebook, or any other service. People are looking to engage with you, not just see you broadcast out.
John Cass (http://twitter.com/johncass) is a great example of doing it right. John is always working to engage in conversations, not just broadcast information.
Back to Frank at Comcast (http://twitter.com/comcastcares). He doesn’t sound like an official PR machine. He has open conversations and gets the customers to the right place.
Just be yourself. People want to communicate with people, not machines or corporate entities.
