Presentation at St. Clements School on how the Internet can be leveraged to change your career path. I discus the importance of personal branding and how both Twitter and Linkedin can be used to engage with professors and future bosses.
3. START WITH
SEARCH
“77% OF ALL RECRUITERS ... RUN AN ONLINE SEARCH
FOR THE CANDIDATE PRIOR TO CONTACTING, YET ONLY
29% OF STUDENTS USE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES TO
PROMOTE THEMSELVES” WHEN LOOKING FOR A JOB.

• Start with a Google search, see what shows up within search results for the web and images.
• Make a list of all of the social networks that you are a part of and the links your name appears in.
• Remove all unprofessional content from your public accounts. This means combing through any
public photos on Facebook. Your next employer doesn’t need to see photos of you in a bathing suit.
• Privacy settings don’t always protect you. There are always ways to access your information.
If you wouldn’t be comfortable having it on the front page of The New York Times,
it probably shouldn’t be anywhere online.
7. HOW CAN YOU
BUILD YOUR OWN
BRAND ONLINE?

8. STEP 1:
OWN YOUR NAME
St. Clement’s School
Your name is at the forefront of your
personal brand. It’s important to
appear in search so reserve your
name now in social networks
About.me) and other niche networks.

3. YOUR EXPERIENCE AND FUTURE GOALS
STEP 2:

10. 1. USE YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKS
DIFFERENTLY. KEEP SOCIAL LIFE
SEPARATE FROM WORKING LIFE.
2. TEST DIFFERENT METHODS TO
ENGAGE. ASK QUESTIONS, START
CONVERSATIONS, JOIN GROUPS.
3. RESEARCH ALL USERS. FOLLOW
INDUSTRY LEADERS TO SEE HOW THEY
USE THE TOOLS AND WHO THEY
ENGAGE WITH.

AFTER ALL THAT, DON’T FORGET TO
SEARCH THEM!
Find similarities, common interests and conversation starters to help you build a connection.
• On Twitter, see what they are posting and follow them.
• On LinkedIn, see where they previously worked or went to school and ask for a connection.
• On Facebook, see what they like, if they have kids, what they are interested in.

I USE TWITTER TO HELP MY
IDEAS SPREAD, TO LEARN
NEW THINGS AND TO
ENGAGE WITH OTHERS.
Twitter is:
• About engagement
• About listening to people
• Connecting with everyone in and out of your industry/network
• Great for business and personal relationships
• To increase your social presence
• Easy way to update your other social networks

This is the most professional social network. It’s a place to brag about your achievements and brand yourself as an
excellent resource on a particular topic.
It also allows you to offer every professional or academic connection a ‘safe’ place to connect
with you where there is no threat of finding personal pictures or posts. If you have a LinkedIn
page as a professional profile, you can ask people to connect with you here to stay in touch
and learn more about you. This way, they may not Google you or look for you on other social
networks.
Why Linkedin?
• More public then Faceboook, which means more views from industry professionals.
• It’s where recruiters go first.
• Linkedin matches you to other users, groups and jobs that may interest you.
• Linkedin will give you presence on Google

• Find out which books you will need and follow the authors that wrote them.
• Search for university clubs and groups on Twitter and follow them to connect
with students and see if you can get involved prior to next September.

A DASHBOARD
TO MEASURE
SUCCESS
Tools like Klout will give recruiters and colleagues the
ability to score your social media success. Most
businesses want to have connected and social
employees. Start to measure your success and tweak
your messaging. Find out which people care about the
things you tweet and like - they are your supporters.
- Your Klout score could be more important then your GPA.
- What you influence matters
