1) A cost-benefit analysis was conducted of a proposed shared digital long-term preservation (LTP) system in Finland to improve availability, usability, and preservation of digital materials across libraries, archives, and museums.
2) The analysis estimated costs of 42 million euros for the first 12 years of planning and implementation, plus 3.4 million for a dark archive. Annual running costs after year 12 were estimated to be stable at 4 million euros.
3) Benefits of the shared system were estimated to include savings of 30 million euros during the first 12 years compared to separate LTP systems, as well as ongoing annual savings of 10 million euros from lower costs, cheaper material management, and better preservation results
