Dear Friends of Track & Field and Cross-Country,
William and Mary track and field athletes have much to be

2012 Men’s Track & Field Season
Indoor

At the IC4A meet, the Tribe's fifth-place finish was the best recorded at either the indoor or out-
door championships since 2000. Sophomore Josh Hardin (Sterling, VA) won the 5,000m with a
lifetime best of 14:04.12. He’s the first Tribe runner to win the IC4A indoor 5k since Kevin Krause
’94 in 1991. Finishing second was junior Alex McGrath (Marlborough, NH) with a personal-best
time of 14:07.65. In the 3,000m, McGrath and sophomore Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, PA)
each ran a lifetime best to earn All-East honors. McGrath placed fourth in 8:10.41, with Gunzen-
hauser just behind in 8:10.64. Also running a lifetime best was senior Chris Tyson (Arlington,
VA), who placed third in the mile in 4:06.57). Sophomore David Gunnerson (Yorktown, VA)
placed 10th in the 1,000m, while junior Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, VA) took ninth in the long jump.

Outdoor

William and Mary placed third at the CAA meet behind George Mason and UNC-Wilmington, earn-
ing four individual titles and 11 all-conference (top 3) finishes. Senior Brandon Heroux (Westfield,
NJ) became the first athlete to win the javelin four years in a row.

Alex McGrath won the 5,000m by four seconds in 14:24.92. Josh Hardin was third, freshman Will
Bass (Nashville, NC) was sixth, and sophomore Andrew Ryan (Gloucester, MA) was seventh.

W&M dominated the 10,000m, taking the top two spots and placing five athletes in the top seven.
Sophomore Joshua Mercado (Citrus Heights, CA) claimed his first conference crown in 30:50.25,
just a step ahead of classmate Rad Gunzenhauser. It’s the 10th year in a row a Tribe runner has
won the event, and both men qualified for the IC4A meet in their first collegiate 10k races. Senior
Tyler Jones (Chalfont, PA) was fourth, and Alex McGrath doubled back to take fifth. Senior Zach
Gates (Fishers, IN) placed seventh.

Chris Tyson won the 1,500m in an easy 3:49.98, while junior John Muller (LaGrangeville, NY),
redshirt-sophomore Zach Tennant (Fairview, WV), and freshman Ian MacFawn (LaVale, MD)
placed second, fifth and eighth, respectively. Will Bass placed second in his first-ever steeple-
chase race, while sophomore Jack Anderson (Pfafftown, NC) took third.

On the field, freshman Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, VA) placed third in the shot put, seventh in
the hammer throw, and eighth in the discus. Ben Katz took his third All-CAA award by placing sec-
ond in the high jump.

At the IC4A Championships, Joshua Mercado was 17th in the 10,000m with a time of 31:11.06,
while Rad Gunzenhauser took 21st at 5,000m in 14:34.15.

In the first round of the NCAA championships, Chris Tyson placed seventh in his heat of the
1,500m. He graduated this year as the sixth-fastest W&M 1,500m runner in history. Josh Hardin
and Alex McGrath placed 21st and 25th in the 10,000m.

After placing third in the East semifinals, Brandon Heroux advanced to the NCAA finals in Des
Moines, Iowa, where he broken his own school record in the javelin with a throw of 73.55m (241-4)
and took eight place. He’s the first All-American in a field event for the Tribe since Monk Little (’35)
accomplished the feat in the broad jump in 1934 and ’35. It was the end of a fantastic collegiate
season for Heroux, who also took second at the Penn Relays and was named the CAA Scholar
www.spikedshoesociety.org

Athlete of the Year for the second time.
During the postseason, Heroux threw 70.02m (229-8) to finish fourth at the NACAC U-23 Champi-
onships in Irajuato, Mexico–two weeks after placing sixth at the Canadian Olympic Trials.
“I truly feel blessed to have been able to compete for the Tribe over the past four years, and even
more so to have been able to return from injury as quickly as I did to compete this year,” said Her-
oux of the Tommy John surgery that prevented him from competing at the 2011 NCAA Champion-
ships. “I’d like to thank all of my coaches, doctors, athletic trainers, family, and friends for all of
their help and support! I couldn’t have accomplished any of this without all of you.” !

2012 Women’s Track & Field Season
Indoor

William and Mary tied for 36th place at the ECAC Championships. Sophomore Elaina Balouris
(Allison Park, PA) earned All-East honors in the 5,000m, placing eighth in 17:11.46. In the 1,000m
run, sophomore Christina Lee (Sterling, VA) ran a lifetime best to take seventh in 2:52.47, and
junior Katie Buenaga (Greenville, DE) placed eighth in 2:56.22.

The Tribe’s 4x800m relay of freshman Maggie Gutierrez (Purcellville, VA), sophomore Olivia
Harding (Roanoke, VA), Katie Buenaga, and junior Michelle Britto (Woodbridge, VA) also earned
All-East accolades, placing seventh in 9:11.16, the ninth-fastest time ever run indoors at W&M.

Outdoor

The Tribe placed eighth at the CAA Championships, earning one individual title and five All-CAA
awards. Elaina Balouris won the 10,000m by more than 21 seconds, crossing the line in 35:57.92.
Redshirt-junior Natalie Baird (Sterling, VA) placed second in the discus and third in the shot put.

In the 1,500m, Katie Buenaga and sophomore Clarissa Schick (Richmond, VA) ran career-best
times to take third and fourth. Michelle Britto was sixth, and senior Heather Beichner (Cary, NC)
took 12th. Freshmen Jess Cygnan (Bethlehem, PA) and Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, GA) placed
third and sixth in the 5,000m, qualifying for the U.S. Junior Championships.

Sophomore Nicole Dory (Fort Worth, TX) tied for fifth in the pole vault, and freshman Nina Ullom
(Chantilly, VA) was seventh. Dory also took seventh in the triple jump.

At the ECAC Championships, Natalie Baird placed fifth in the discus, two weeks after taking fourth
at the Penn Relays—where volunteer assistant coach Darcy McDonald won the Olympic Develop-
ment 10,000m in 34:29.

Elaina Balouris ran 33:56.26 for 10,000m–missing the school record by just one second–at the Mt.
SAC Relays to qualify for the NCAA semifinals, where she ran 34:29.88 for eighth place to move
on to the finals. In the final round, she placed 19th in 34:41.97 and was named to the USTFCCCA
Honorable Mention All-America team.

“While the race didn’t play out ideally, as it went out extremely fast, it was a huge learning experi-
ence and a crucial step for the future,” Balouris said. “I’ve watched some of these girls run this
past year, completely amazed by their speed, and last night, I had the opportunity to race against
them. I’m looking forward to racing against them in Cross Country in the fall alongside my team-
mates! Thank you to my coaches, family, teammates, and friends for supporting me every lap of
the way.” !

  • 2. Find us online at 2012 Men’s Track & Field Season Indoor At the IC4A meet, the Tribe's fifth-place finish was the best recorded at either the indoor or out- door championships since 2000. Sophomore Josh Hardin (Sterling, VA) won the 5,000m with a lifetime best of 14:04.12. He’s the first Tribe runner to win the IC4A indoor 5k since Kevin Krause ’94 in 1991. Finishing second was junior Alex McGrath (Marlborough, NH) with a personal-best time of 14:07.65. In the 3,000m, McGrath and sophomore Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, PA) each ran a lifetime best to earn All-East honors. McGrath placed fourth in 8:10.41, with Gunzen- hauser just behind in 8:10.64. Also running a lifetime best was senior Chris Tyson (Arlington, VA), who placed third in the mile in 4:06.57). Sophomore David Gunnerson (Yorktown, VA) placed 10th in the 1,000m, while junior Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, VA) took ninth in the long jump. Outdoor William and Mary placed third at the CAA meet behind George Mason and UNC-Wilmington, earn- ing four individual titles and 11 all-conference (top 3) finishes. Senior Brandon Heroux (Westfield, NJ) became the first athlete to win the javelin four years in a row. Alex McGrath won the 5,000m by four seconds in 14:24.92. Josh Hardin was third, freshman Will Bass (Nashville, NC) was sixth, and sophomore Andrew Ryan (Gloucester, MA) was seventh. W&M dominated the 10,000m, taking the top two spots and placing five athletes in the top seven. Sophomore Joshua Mercado (Citrus Heights, CA) claimed his first conference crown in 30:50.25, just a step ahead of classmate Rad Gunzenhauser. It’s the 10th year in a row a Tribe runner has won the event, and both men qualified for the IC4A meet in their first collegiate 10k races. Senior Tyler Jones (Chalfont, PA) was fourth, and Alex McGrath doubled back to take fifth. Senior Zach Gates (Fishers, IN) placed seventh. Chris Tyson won the 1,500m in an easy 3:49.98, while junior John Muller (LaGrangeville, NY), redshirt-sophomore Zach Tennant (Fairview, WV), and freshman Ian MacFawn (LaVale, MD) placed second, fifth and eighth, respectively. Will Bass placed second in his first-ever steeple- chase race, while sophomore Jack Anderson (Pfafftown, NC) took third. On the field, freshman Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, VA) placed third in the shot put, seventh in the hammer throw, and eighth in the discus. Ben Katz took his third All-CAA award by placing sec- ond in the high jump. At the IC4A Championships, Joshua Mercado was 17th in the 10,000m with a time of 31:11.06, while Rad Gunzenhauser took 21st at 5,000m in 14:34.15. In the first round of the NCAA championships, Chris Tyson placed seventh in his heat of the 1,500m. He graduated this year as the sixth-fastest W&M 1,500m runner in history. Josh Hardin and Alex McGrath placed 21st and 25th in the 10,000m. After placing third in the East semifinals, Brandon Heroux advanced to the NCAA finals in Des Moines, Iowa, where he broken his own school record in the javelin with a throw of 73.55m (241-4) and took eight place. He’s the first All-American in a field event for the Tribe since Monk Little (’35) accomplished the feat in the broad jump in 1934 and ’35. It was the end of a fantastic collegiate season for Heroux, who also took second at the Penn Relays and was named the CAA Scholar
  • 3. www.spikedshoesociety.org Athlete of the Year for the second time. During the postseason, Heroux threw 70.02m (229-8) to finish fourth at the NACAC U-23 Champi- onships in Irajuato, Mexico–two weeks after placing sixth at the Canadian Olympic Trials. “I truly feel blessed to have been able to compete for the Tribe over the past four years, and even more so to have been able to return from injury as quickly as I did to compete this year,” said Her- oux of the Tommy John surgery that prevented him from competing at the 2011 NCAA Champion- ships. “I’d like to thank all of my coaches, doctors, athletic trainers, family, and friends for all of their help and support! I couldn’t have accomplished any of this without all of you.” ! 2012 Women’s Track & Field Season Indoor William and Mary tied for 36th place at the ECAC Championships. Sophomore Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, PA) earned All-East honors in the 5,000m, placing eighth in 17:11.46. In the 1,000m run, sophomore Christina Lee (Sterling, VA) ran a lifetime best to take seventh in 2:52.47, and junior Katie Buenaga (Greenville, DE) placed eighth in 2:56.22. The Tribe’s 4x800m relay of freshman Maggie Gutierrez (Purcellville, VA), sophomore Olivia Harding (Roanoke, VA), Katie Buenaga, and junior Michelle Britto (Woodbridge, VA) also earned All-East accolades, placing seventh in 9:11.16, the ninth-fastest time ever run indoors at W&M. Outdoor The Tribe placed eighth at the CAA Championships, earning one individual title and five All-CAA awards. Elaina Balouris won the 10,000m by more than 21 seconds, crossing the line in 35:57.92. Redshirt-junior Natalie Baird (Sterling, VA) placed second in the discus and third in the shot put. In the 1,500m, Katie Buenaga and sophomore Clarissa Schick (Richmond, VA) ran career-best times to take third and fourth. Michelle Britto was sixth, and senior Heather Beichner (Cary, NC) took 12th. Freshmen Jess Cygnan (Bethlehem, PA) and Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, GA) placed third and sixth in the 5,000m, qualifying for the U.S. Junior Championships. Sophomore Nicole Dory (Fort Worth, TX) tied for fifth in the pole vault, and freshman Nina Ullom (Chantilly, VA) was seventh. Dory also took seventh in the triple jump. At the ECAC Championships, Natalie Baird placed fifth in the discus, two weeks after taking fourth at the Penn Relays—where volunteer assistant coach Darcy McDonald won the Olympic Develop- ment 10,000m in 34:29. Elaina Balouris ran 33:56.26 for 10,000m–missing the school record by just one second–at the Mt. SAC Relays to qualify for the NCAA semifinals, where she ran 34:29.88 for eighth place to move on to the finals. In the final round, she placed 19th in 34:41.97 and was named to the USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-America team. “While the race didn’t play out ideally, as it went out extremely fast, it was a huge learning experi- ence and a crucial step for the future,” Balouris said. “I’ve watched some of these girls run this past year, completely amazed by their speed, and last night, I had the opportunity to race against them. I’m looking forward to racing against them in Cross Country in the fall alongside my team- mates! Thank you to my coaches, family, teammates, and friends for supporting me every lap of the way.” !
