During the 2009-10 academic year a team of four instructional designers from Wytheville, Lord Fairfax, J. Sargeant Reynolds and Piedmont Community Colleges collaborated to design a new 10 week, online course entitled MODEL: Multimedia for Online, Distance and E-Learning. MODEL is the third in a series of online courses that include the award winning TOP: Teaching Online Program and IDOL: Instructional Design for Online Learning. This series of online courses is designed to empower faculty with the skills and best practices needed to increase student engagement and successful outcomes in a distance learning environment. MODEL introduces learners to the world of multimedia design while staying true to the ASSURE model and Quality Matters standards emphasized in previous courses. While completing weekly assignments and discussion activities, learners work on a multimedia design project that incorporates best practices and skills ranging from storyboarding to incorporating multimedia into Blackboard and student assessment. Throughout the course design process for MODEL, faculty were given opportunities to provide feedback to mold the course to their needs. One of the greatest benefits to faculty taking MODEL is the collaborative nature of the course. Faculty from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines come together to share ideas and applications for multimedia. The MODEL course has served as a springboard for increased faculty teamwork and cross discipline application of learning objects. MODEL was piloted during Summer Term 2010 and released to the entire VCCS in Fall 2010.
